I never really noticed that before but I agree. This would have been an amazing image if it were symmetrical.

It's a nice start, and pretty good lighting. However, you look awkward and posed, and the logo on your hat is really bugging me. Bright colors and text bring eyes in, and it's hard to not look there. The branches at the top of the frame that are lit up by the flash are a little weird too. I think this image definitely has a lot of potential, you just have a few small things to sort out first.

And Ben, why do you think you need more contrast on those? The tonal range is beautiful, I wouldn't change a thing. Try touching them up in photoshop a bit and see what happens, but I think they look great aside from possible light leaks. Also, you should try Portra 160VC if you're shooting landscapes, it is an incredible film.

Ya thanks man! Totally agree with everything you said! I mean for one I didn't go out and plan to take pictures of myself. I was doing some nature stuff and got bored and I had a flash in my bag with me so I just whipped it out and started playing around! I honestly didn't even plan out how I was gonna sit, I just ran over and did like a weird pose thing. I didn't like plan my outfit or anything at all either it's just what I was wearing that day. haha. I have another one of myself by a river but as I was out there I realized I didn't have like a bounce card or anything for my flash so it's a little strong on all of my shots. I tried moving it around and using different power levels but it was still to strong. I could post the other one up too if anyone wants to see it?

Honestly I've been doing photography for a couple years now and for the longest time I just did sports and stuff and I was like "blah flash is dumb I'll never need it" (so ignorant) but now I'd like to go to college for photography and I realize lighting is everything. So I'm definitely going to try to get another flash and do some really cool stuff. I mean hopefully I can get a softbox eventually for some more specific stuff. But really this was one of the first times I've used an off camera flash! I mean I used it for some playing around make shift studio stuff at my house before but that's it. Thanks for the crit man!

If anyone else has anything else they'd like to say feel free! I'd like to get better and I have a lot to learn so!

That was after PS work. I added a decent amount of contrast. Some of it was scanning, the negs look a little better, but still kinda low contrast. And I know about the light leaks, half that roll was useless, I need a new set of seals. I just started shooting film again and found out the hard way that my ME Super apparently isn't so lightproof haha.

Definitely want to try some 160 vc. You know anywhere you can still find it? Or was only the 400 changed to the new Portra (which Ive heard is awesome too).

It's a lot easier to work from a flat negative than a contrasty one, I purposely shoot/develop mine to be on the flat side. If you ever get a drum scan done or scan on an imacon, the file you get will be the flattest, dullest thing you have ever seen. You can't add detail to a contrasty negative, but you can bump up the contrast on a flat one.

I just checked B&H, I guess they got rid of the vc and nc designations across the line (or it looks that way after 45 seconds of searching). However, I will say that the new Portra 400 in 4x5 is the best color negative film I have ever used.

Hm. Good to know then. Im definitely still learning about film, especially the scanning process.

And yeah Ive heard good things about the new Portra across the board, even 35mm (all I shoot). Crazy latitude. Michelle on here has been telling me I need to try it.

1st time really working with B&W film. Any film critiques have anything to share? Next semester we'll se shooting exclusively 4 x 5 - any pointers as to what to think about before I start on that? Thanks

B&W 4x5 is incredible. Definitely get a spot meter, because it's all about placing your zones perfectly and getting amazing negatives--once you've printed off of large format negatives, you'll never be happy working with anything else.

4x5 makes you think a lot more when you're shooting, too. I keep probably 40% of my negatives from 4x5, whereas on the rare occasions I use 35mm I'll be happy with one shot off every roll or so. It's a very slow and careful process, although you definitely aren't bound to any formal principles if you don't want to be.

Big negatives also give you more options in the experimental realm of the darkroom, if you're into that sort of thing.

If you have any specific questions give me a holler, I shoot probably 80% large format.

Yeah, that seems like something that would make backlit photos a lot better. I've never really done portraits before, but I must say it is kinda fun. I certainly want to try some of this stuff again with more of an idea what I am doing.

One thing my photo teacher has been saying is to watch out for the pinks in the skin tones.  Shooting in raw tends to make it really pink and flaws the skin tones.  It's really hard to get skin tones to look really clean.  One thing to rid of the pinks a little is to up the blue and to up the greens.

Played with my flash and triggers a little, too. I think that is why there is some motion blur, any tips to using flashes with action?

this was really my first time shooting photos for skiing, i usually shoot video. Played with my flash and triggers a little, too. I think that is why there is some motion blur, any tips to using flashes with action? Click for larger image Click for larger image Click for larger image
Shorter flash durations (so not full power) and underexpose your ambient light.

Basically. Meter for ambient light. Determine how many stops you want to under expose by, adjust your camera accordingly. Then set your flashes for a proper exposure based on that setting.

The top and bottom ones look a little weird.  I don't really know why but they look off for some reason.
