There are some phenomenal photos in this thread. I'm just getting into photography, but I love it oh so much. Critique is welcome seeing as these are some of the first photos I've taken and I definitely don't know all the technical aspects of photography.

Gili Trawangan, Indonesia, you have to go. No police, tons of partying, beautiful women, beautiful beaches, legal mushrooms, abundant marijuana, you name it.

This sounds amazing! Is the pot accessible publicly or is it grown privately and sold? Some great photos in that collection.

It's grown over on Lombok and imported, but it's publicly accessible. As soon as I agreed to stay in my guest house, as I was signing the check in, the owner rolled me up a fat cone as a welcome gift. You can't walk more than 100 meters without being offered weed "smoke, smoke?" or mushrooms. But the mushrooms are also sold in shakes at bars and stuff. I forgot to mention that every monday, wednesday, and friday are all official party nights where mostly everyone goes to one bar (different for all three nights) and they have a DJ and dance floor going. Definitely head down there if you can, I got stuck for the majority of three weeks on that island, aside from the trek, I was there. Thank you by the way, I'm glad you enjoyed the photos.

so I really have no knowledge or skills in photography and definitely do not consider myself a photographer, but I really want to start. I messed around with my mum's Canon EOS-1D Mark II while on vacation this summer. these are all no post work too.

Anyways let me know what you guys think and of course any and all criticism is welcome since I really don't know what im doing..

You could go a bit brighter though on all of those shots. Espicially the second to last one, the color was really wierd with the background.

Second to last one was just a bad angle.  Marroon jacket and trees behind him make for no real contrast.   If I go brighter on the other ones I'd wash out my whites though.  I always judge brightness by watching my whites and highlights

Good work! Only thing I'd say is you need to move the flash to viewers left for the goofy skate on that drop, otherwise it's swell.

This was a very touching moment. its definitely not the best photography, but I think the purpose makes it special. it was the virginia war memorial, and was lit up entirely at night. we had just made it through the hardest part of the whole challenge, and this moment was seriously one of the most emotional things I have ever witnessed. tears streamed down the faces of many men while we were there. 90% of these people were in the military, so it was very important too them.

what lens are you using? might want to go with a longer focal length.looks like you're getting some distortion in the face
looking back, i would have been pretty okay with it if someone shot me in the face when i was 15. - asian_allen$

yeah, I think you're right.

It's a 55mm on a 1.6 crop sensor.

Nope, you are fine then. Anything from 80-100 is perfect for portraits and shouldn't give you any distortion.

What you need to work on is just posing, even if it's a headshot. When you have just the face to focus on, you need to position her face so it's the most flattering for her. The most simple way to pose someone is to look at their eyes. Everyone has a smaller eye, and if you put that eye close to the camera then you slightly correct their uneven face (everyones face is uneven). If you fail to do that and their bigger eye is closer to the camera, than their smaller eye looks even smaller which turns their face all weird. You've probably heard of people having a 'good side', and that's when their smaller eye is closer to the camera.

Anyways, the light is really nice and you have catchlights in her eyes (crucial). Everyone is going to look great with that soft even lighting that you used. You definitely have potential, the shots are super clean and technically well done. Just work on posing and color correcting her skin and you're set.

And a portrait. Never really experimented with traditional portraits before, but I'm fairly happy with this.

Some film stuff. Color is gold 200. B&W is HP5. Definitely gonna push HP5 if I ever shoot it again, not enough contrast.

First of all I use lightroom, which is such an amazing bit of software and allows you to do all sorts of stuff

With the picture of the rocks I pushed the exposure and brightness up a bit, and gave it a slightly bluey greeny tint.

With the picture of the side of the ferry and the mainland behind I again gave it a greeny tint but this time dropped the exposure down so the background would be viewable. I also added some fill light so the foreground was more exposed.

I also played around doing minor adjustments with other settings.
