Learn More About Reviews
Thanks for taking the time to read the help file, hopefully now we won’t have to flame you for being a noob or not using the search bar!
The Reviews section was reworked for two main reasons: The first being that our old reviews system was broken, and the second being that new school skiing still doesn’t have a go-to place for product information that isn’t a ski magazine’s buyers guide.
We created the current Reviews system because we know we have a huge audience of skiers out there with intimate knowledge of thousands of products, and we wanted to attempt to get those opinions into the public sphere in an open and accessible way so that future buying decisions are made in the most informed context possible.
Reviewer Profiles
One of the ways we’ve tried to provide context to the Reviews is the introduction of Reviewer Profiles. The Reviewer Profile lets anyone reading a review find out more about what kind of skier the reviewer is so that they themselves can make a judgment on whether or not what they’re reading is relevant to their situation.
Creating a Reviewer Profile is mandatory to able to add a review, but we’ve split the process up into two steps so that those only willing to provide the most basic information can do so, while those that would like to share more have ample room.
Accessing and modifying your Reviewer Profile is as simple as visiting the Add Review page. Your Reviewer Profile basics will be shown on the right hand side of the page (with the first step of Adding a Review on the left). Contents will be at their default position if you’ve yet to fill it in, otherwise it will list your current information.
Below your basic information will be a link to access to your ‘Expanded Profile’. This area includes more fields of information such as Primary Skiing Location, Preferred Terrain, and Skier type, as well as text areas for you to describe your style in your own words. The more information you give the better idea everyone else will have of what you’re saying and where you’re coming from when reading your reviews.
Adding Reviews
To add a Review, visit the Review Home Page (http://newschoolers.com/web/content/reviews) and click the Add a Review link (http://newschoolers.com/web/members/reviewupdate/). Also, a link to Add Review is located in the quick links on the right hand side of the site.
Adding a Review is a 2 stage process. Assuming you’ve already filled out your Reviewer Profile, you’ll be able to enter the basic information for the product you’re reviewing. You’ll need the Manufacturer, Product Name, Category, and Year. Once you’ve entered in the basic information, you’ll be taken to the next page in the process where you’ll upload any product photos you have, as well as the review itself.
Once you’re done simply press “Add Review” and your Review will be saved. Please note: Reviews added for Products or Manufacturers not already in the system will be accepted as “inactive”. Inactive reviews are checked in by the site admins daily in order to properly organize new entries. So if you don’t see your review listed right away don’t worry it’s not your fault.
Viewing Reviews
Visiting the main Reviews page (listed under Resources in sites menu) will give you access to all of the reviews currently in the system. Listed first are any Featured Reviews. These are reviews conducted by NS staff and other notable friends and members. Second are the first 5-10 of the latest reviews added to the system. Below that you can browse reviews by their category and manufacturer and also view the top rated products.
Reviewing the Reviews
While reading reviews we’d like you to give feedback on the Reviews and the Reviewer. At the bottom of each entry, various ratings will be available. A member’s Reviewer Rating will be a result of the feedback that their reviews receive. Try expressing and props or shit-talking as numerical values as they are easier for us to quantify and share with everyone else.
