Newry, Maine (March 10, 2014)—On March 28 and 29, 2014, the world’s top professional and amateur freeskiers will compete side-by-side in what is the largest—and only major—freeskiing event in the East: The 6th Annual Dumont Cup at Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. Cash and prizes valued at $20k are up for grabs, along with the opportunity to compete with—and potentially beat—the first-ever Gold, Silver, and Bronze Freeskiing slopestyle medalists, all of whom are signed up to compete in this year’s Dumont Cup.
Created by professional freeskier and 10-time X Games Medalist Simon Dumont, The Dumont Cup is an Association of Freeskiing Professionals platinum-rated slopestyle event that takes place each March at Dumont’s home mountain, Sunday River Resort.
“I’m very excited for this year’s event,” Simon Dumont says. “We have a new trail that Sunday River built for us, just further showcasing their dedication to Freeskiing. We also have the best slopestyle talent in the world – which includes the entire Sochi Slopestyle Olympic podium – participating. The field and venue are going to be incredible.”
New This Year:
Dumont’s professional Freeski roster is the most impressive to date and includes Joss Christensen (Olympic Gold medalist), Gus Kenworthy (Olympic Silver medalist and the 2012 Dumont Cup Champion), and Nick Goepper (Bronze medalist and the 2013 and 2011 Dumont Cup Champion). Other participating professional freeskiers include: Olympian Bobby Brown, McRae Williams, Alex Schlopy (also a past Dumont Cup champion), Matt Walker, Olympian Torin Yater-Wallace, Alex Beaulieu-Marchand, Chris Laker, Vinnie Gagnier, PK Hunder, and Kai Mahler. Tom Wallisch, the 2009 Dumont Cup winner, is also returning as one of the event’s new judges.
In addition to hosting the largest group of professional Freeskiers ever at one Dumont Cup, Dumont will also showcase to the world the event’s new location on T72—a new 15-acre terrain park trail that Dumont helped design with help from Snow Park Technologies. Dumont is also responsible for designing the event’s slopestyle course which will consist of a progressive jump line among other surprises.
The Dumont Cup is a two-day slopestyle competition that takes place on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. Qualifiers will be held in two sessions on Friday, March 28, from 10 AM until 4:30 PM / EST. At 4:30 PM, 40 amateurs will be selected via a bib toss to advance to the semi-finals held the following day.
On Saturday, March 29, from 10 AM until 12 PM, the 40 chosen amateur skiers will compete head-to-head with the professionals. At 12:30 PM, another bib toss will determine the 20 amateurs advancing to the finals. Each finalist will have three runs to showcase their skills. Judges will then determine the top three overall winners as well as a standout amateur from the two-day competition and the athlete with the highest point total will be awarded the 2014 Dumont Cup. $20k in cash and prizes are up for grabs for first, second, and third place finishers. Amateur skiers will also have the opportunity to score some great prizes from Dumont Cup sponsors.
In five years’ time, the Dumont Cup has seen its share of milestones. Though initially intended to be a regional event, competitors from all over the United States, throughout Canada, and even Europe regularly compete for a chance at the coveted Cup.
“I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved with this event,” says Dumont. “When we started out, it was our goal to give New England amateur skiers a chance to get noticed and to help expand the audience for slopestyle skiing. Since that time, the Dumont Cup has received support from contestants around the World, been formally recognized by the AFP, and we’ve seen several winners go pro. I’m proud of what this contest has achieved in such a short time.”
