This was the second time I’ve had a chance to shoot tall bike jousting and this time around I was a bit more prepared for what to expect than the first.  It’s one of the funnest events that I’ve had a chance to shoot, it’s action, rediculous (come on, jousting on tall bikes…really?), costumes and there’s no shortage of carnage.  What more could you really ask for?  We started out at Liberty Park and once everyone came together we all moved out to the location.  I actually got a chance to get ahead to the location this time since I actually made it on time and then found out where we were going!  Chalk one up to being prepared this time!

A few things were different for me this time around.  The venue was quite different this time around as it was a wide open parking lot so I didn’t quite have the overhead element like last year but the better action this time around more than made up for it.  Also, I started out using my Paul Buff Einstein strobes for lighting.  Later, I quit using them after having multiple triggering issues.  Apparently the capacitors in the current generation of Einstein’s put out a lot of RF interference that get in the way of the radio signals of Pocket Wizard’s.  So, I put those down, threw up the speedlights and things were rolling again for me!

It’s a really fun time and fun scene.  Even the SLC Police showed up and took a spin on some tall bikes!  They unfortunately did not join in the jousting but not having a problem with us being there was good enough!  I’d suggest everyone goes and checks it out if you get a chance.  If you are in Salt Lake City, then keep an eye out at http://www.saltcycle.com where a lot of the underground bike events are posted.  Thanks to Mark for putting this one on, I know everyone had a great time.
