"We are pleased to announce the hiring of Brady," athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement. "He is a terrific coach and will be a great ambassador and leader for our football program. We look forward to having him build a championship program on the field and in the classroom."

Hoke, 52, was an assistant coach at Michigan from 1995-2002 before leaving to become Ball State's head coach. In five seasons at Ball State, Hoke built the Cardinals from a floundering program into a 12-win team. In 2009, Hoke went to San Diego State and compiled a 4-8 record in his first season. In 2010, he turned the Aztecs into a 9-4 squad. The season culminated with a convincing 35-14 win over Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Hoke will replace Rich Rodriguez, who was terminated after three seasons in Ann Arbor. The announcement will formally take place at a press conference Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET at the Junge Family Champions Center on Michigan's campus.
