OPPOSITION to the Da Vinci Code?

does anyone else refuse to read this book, solely on the fact that the entire american world has deemed it a piece of literary brilliance?

the majority of people aren't that interesting or that smart, i know for damn sure (because i'm from the stupid country) that a fuck load of americans are complete morons. if something is this popular, it cant possibly be that good. you see in america and pretty much everywhere (because no country is inhabited by masses of critical intellectuals), to really fucking sell something you have to make appeal to the majority...and the majority just isn't that smart.

and it doesn't help that almost every boring, unintelligent, unintellectual and uncritical person i know has read this book and lists it as one of their favorites. what are the others on their list? some michael chricton books, various books 'written' by athletes, some rush limbaugh book, etc. while all the intelligent people i know who've read it, sum it up as a quick moderately interesting read, but not particularly well researched or innovatively presented.

i don't think i'll ever read this book. i hear steven spielberg and tom hanks are collaborating to make a movie of it. i'll see that and save my literary time for more substantial works.

por ejemplo: read middlesex by jeffery eugenides. fucking amazing book and for those of you who need awards, it got the pulitzer prize for fiction in 2003. its almost 600 pages so you get losts of good reading out of it.

im totally anti religion, and as i hear it controdicts religion so that sounds good but...

I'm not into reading books anymore, I used to read a lot when I was in elementary school.

BUT The Hitchiker's Guide To The Universe..the only trilogy with five books :D Its an intense read and I can see a TRUCKFUL of shit that has been copied from it in todays TV, literacy etc. A MUST READ. You really want to read it to the end the second you pick it up. I hear there's a movie coming up too this summer. A

Alpinecowboy, my girlfriend reads/has read many many many books in her time, and her all-time favorite is Watership Down. How about you?

some people who i respect and would consider well read have told me that they enjoyed reading it. i, however, have some kind of elitist complex about what i read, and would be embarrased to be seen in public with it. i probably wont read it either. i was in the airport the other day, and a guy that was waiting in the terminal near me had it sitting on his carry on bag. he was also bound for el paso, and was discussing in a very texan way, the intracacies and neuances of mexican food vs. new mexican food with some of his mustachioed buddies. this entire scenario further inspired me not to get it... and besides, the only thing more embarassing about being seen with it in publc would be to be seen purchasing it at a book store. yikes. anyhow, my 2 cents.

i read the da vinci. it's definitely by no means a really well written book. but some of the facts (although i'm not sure they're all actually 'facts') are pretty interesting. like the divine number. that number is very fascinating.

You are being pretty ignorant by saying you will not read something just because it has been popularized. I enjoy historical fictions and books about the history of science and what not, but every now and again, a good 'stupid book' is in order. SOmetimes I need a book by clive cussler or tom clancy to just add soemthign new into the mix. I find I get bored if I read the same type of book al lthe time. Don't judge people on what they read is all I am saying.

You have to read the DaVinci code the same way you watch a Michael Moore movie (with a grain of salt). They are both predominantly fictional works. Both do have facts mixed with imagined pieces of information. I think the draw of the davinci code is that is is just an interesting book to read. As far as the information within is concerned you can take it or leave it but none the less it is interesting to read.

^indeed, with a grain of salt. what bugs me is the sheep that believe it word for word, losing all critical thinking, and believeing all the conspiracy theories thrown at them. i haven't read it, and i don't think it is worth my time.

I read it, I enjoyed it and it is very well researched. it kept my atention the whole way through and was very entertaining. But i dont understand your standpoint. How can you critizize something that you refuse to read yourself? at least borrow it from a friend and read it befor you start to tear it apart.

I read it and thought it was horribly overrated. There was a discussion on this a while back.

Not only was the plot predictable to a large extent, but it seemed as though the reason it got so much credit from everyone was b/c of the 'research' that went into the book. It's my OPINION (remember that) that it was just a few people who thought it was great and everyone else, not wanting to sound stupid, jumped on the bandwagon.

The writing was plain and did anyone else take note that whenever they ran into a problem magically one of them was like oohhhh, I remember from my studies long ago . The solutions to problems were way too easily solved. Think of it this way, it's like having an action movie where the guy has to get over 10 walls that're 40+ feet tall...but conveniently there're ladders up each one.

I'm not gonna harp on anyone's opinion on this book b/c everyone's got them and on one likes them, but you're not alone in either not wanting to read the book or thinking that it wasn't that well written.

If I run across the old thread, I'll post a link to it b/c there were a lot of opposing views on that book where some extremely good arguments were made (all bias aside).

yea it was decent, but really not anything special,
just your run of the mill mystery/thriller,
with some 'facts' thrown in, many of which are questionable at best. If you want some entertainment, go for it, but it is certaintly not a literary masterpiece that will affect you the way a great book does.

It's just a fun book to read thats it, I do'nt really thinkits somethign that supposed to be read and considered seriouse, just for people who want something easy and entertaining to read.

but, i also liked the fact that it opened my eyes to alot of what the book was about, im not saying i chose dan brown's opinion, i just wasnt aware of alot of the facts that were in the book,

i hate to sound like some intellegentsia fuckface... but i am and i am one of the smartest fuckers in the ski industry (i just tend to swear like a pirate, that doesn't mean i'm stupid for my online vocabulary.) after reading the threads, I also noticed how many vapid folks rave about this book. the best example is on facebook. ok, we're college kids, we have drinking and other drugs to consume instead of reading but shit, so many stupid kids put DaVinci Code as their favorite book... I get the impression that so many of these kids never paid attention to reading assignments in high school and college and just got the cliffnotes to great, commonly assigned literature such as Catcher in the Rye or Great Gatsby

The book is great for people with short attention spans who can only handle 2 to 3 page chapters. At least these kids are finally reading and (hopefully) learning something.

thats because of the factual errors in the book. mostly to do with canonization. for those of you who dont know what that means, that is the process that was put together to dermine which books went into the Bible. in the da vinci code it was claimed that there were 40 gospels that were looked at for canonization. in truth, there were only around 15 or 20. many of these books he talks about were actually discussed in the Bible. Paul actually talks about the synoptics, a group of people creating false gospels. we have those today, they are called the synoptic gospels. that is what the da vinci code talks about, synoptic gospels. those books were immediatly rejected for canonization because they were forgeries, many more were not even considered.

many people in my church have read it, because they are thinkers and they know their Bible well, and arent stupid enough to believe the book. others can easily have their faith swayed, sadly enough. i want to read it soon, until then I'm going to rely on the facts pulled from the book and presented to me in Church and my Bible classes in highschool. i might read it eventually, but right now, why bother?

no, im kidding. it was a good book to me, because it was entertaining and intelligent. there may have been some leaps of faith with some factual connections, but teh point of any type of media is to hold the consumer in a state of suspended disbelief, meaning that even though there are leaps of faith to be taken in certain parts of the story, they make sense and do not disrupt the flow and tone of the storyline. The Da vinci code did that admirably, in my opinion.

I don't understand how many people feel that by reading books that they find on the shelves of supermarkets it makes then literary gurus. People should understand the difference between literature and popular fiction (i.e. crichton, koontz, i.e. shit)

as an art history student, it is an interesting read because he mentions sculptures and buildings that I have studied, but people need to be very wary when reading the book.

dan brown misconstrues the truth to bend it and make it work with his story, i.e. 90% of the religious 'facts' he says are true, in fact are not.

i absoltuly loved da vinci code it was the first book i had read on my own freewill in ages probably more than 2 or 3 years and i could not put it down it was just so damn interetig wiht all the facts and the good plot

Just because a book is easy to read doesnt make it bad. The book is better than most. Many classics are boring and hard to read. Just because you have to be smart to read something doesnt make it great.
