What are they? Not favorite bands, but bands that changed your life.
1. Nirvana (first band I ever listened to. Got me into music an playing guitar)
2. Eric Clapton (grew up listening to him from my dad, got me into blues guitar)
3. Led Zeppelin (Got me into classic rock. I was into punk a lot until I heard Zeppelin)
4. The Doors (sent a shiver down my spine first time I listened to them. Got me into poetry and philosophy)
5. Grateful Dead (Got me into Jamming and introduced me into the whole subculture of the jam band scene)

... I'm sure I've got plenty, I don't even know who would be five of the most influential bands to me. They all hafta say something and introduce me to what I am today, though.. so, yeahh... It's hard to put it down to 5.
one love.

in no particular order except the order i was obsessed with them... not that i still listen to these bands all the time.
red hot chili peppers: first band i really got into to and i've always listened to them as there new cds would come out there an amazing kickass band i listen to them atleast every 2 weeks if not every week.
311: got listening to them very early, basicly just there old stuff grassroots is one of my favorite albums there a great band even though i cant say i love there new stuff all that much at all. still very awesome though
the misfits: i was a misfits fanatic for a very long time, during my all punk phase and after. such an amazing band, danzig's voice is beyond anything.
radiohead: cant even explain there awesomeness just everything they do is great and there new cd hail to the thief was amazingly kickass huge favorite.
*VIOLENT FEMMES*: never has a band affected me more than the violent femmes and no band ever will affect me that much. i've never been able to say i really have a favorite band but these guys were instantly. it sucked i didnt know about them earlier seeing as they are a band from the 80's.

1) Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. they really showed me what modern jazz can do
2) Victor Wooten. my bass playing will never be the same, he has the most amazing style ive ever heard
3) Stanley Clarke. he is the man who started slap bass for everyone
4) Weather Report/Jaco Pastorius. Jaco wrote some amazing stuff that i still cant wrap my head around. he definitely changed the way the bass is viewed in the jazz world
5) The beatles. Paul's basslines are so melodic its amazing, everyone should live up to that

Jurassic 5-They got me into hip-hop. Years ago a friend of mine played me "Concrete Schoolyard" and I've been hooked ever since.
Black Sabbath-Back in 6th grade I started really listening to music. I started out with Sabbath, Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix and the older stuff like that.
The Clash-Got me into punk. I've been through a lot of phases in listening to music, and punk was a big phase.
Radiohead-Got me into alternative rock and then indie music. Still one of the best current bands.
DJ Shadow-This guy got me to realize that the stuff behind the rhymes is music, too. I realized that the turntables could be used as an instrument just as much as a guitar.
Excellent thread.

1. Led Zep: Got me into real music. Of course I knew Stairway, but you know Led until you listen every song. Pretty much got me into really playing guitar. Jimmy Page is my God.
2. Pink Floyd: Got me to slowly accept other stuff than "cheery rock", and that there is a lot to be discovered in darker, melodic, airy tunes.
3. Yes: Made me discover the beauty of prog. I put in Close to the Edge in my discman everytime I have a decision to make. I know it's dumb but that CD (well, mainly the title track) makes you think. It is by far my favourite song. I'm pretty sure I'm the only Yes fan on NS though.
4. The Who: I listened to Tommy in one whole session and when it was over, I was so amazed I couldn't talk. The message got directly to me, and I have been thinking about it ever since. Listen to it. Their other material is also great.
5. ... ?: Maybe there'll be a fifth band at one point. Right now, only hour really changed my life. I'm not going to go "look" for a new band, I could be entirely satisfied with only one of those I named above. It has to come by itself...

Half of you seem to be influenced by your parents music. The stuff they grew up listening to doesn't have the same affect on us. You and I are to young for The Grateful Dead to influence us. Most of your choices, just dont make sense.
