I see alot of peeps just skiing the park all day that are insane rippers, however, once they leave the park or on pow days, they look like tourists. Who thinks all-mountain ripping is important, who thinks park is all that matters...

I'm gunna get torn apart for this, but I believe that dspin7x actually had some valid points. He also never said that they couldn't be good skiers, but that many gymnasts do just convert to aerials and don't necessarily have to ski well.

I think the objective of this thread was to discuss park vs. big mountain. Aerials are neither park nor big mountain, thus we have digressed.

I can't comment on aerialists being good all around skiers because I have no idea. All I know is that what they do looks difficult.

I'd say all aspects of the sport are cool. That's why it's so much fun. You don't see snowboard aerials right? How about snowboard jumping? Nope. We're diverse. That's cool in my book.

I'm a big fan of the big mountain because I agree with Kreitler. It's the soul of our sport. That doens't make park skiing less legitimate, but I'm just more 'in tune' with the big mountain aspect of skiing.

hell, i agree that in theory you could be right. i never said the opposite. but in reality, it just isnt true. most aerialists can ski.

It doesnt matter if they can 'ski'. What I was saying is that straight aerials is NOT skiing. Its going straight down an inrun to get speed than doing a gymnastics maneuver.....Christ lanks, youre losing this arguement. The point was aerials isnt skiing, not if aerialists can ski....and everyone agrees with me and doesnt agree with you. Id shut up while youre ahead.

I am going to have to agree with dspin... Lanks and EastAR5 got owned nicely. Although park 'skiing' is fun, it is not really skiing.... it is mostly aerobatics.

Thanks. I love park skiing, but there really isnt much actual 'skiing' skill involved. You just need really good air sense to be a park skier.

i was never arguing whether aerials was/is a true skiing discipline or not. when you started this debate, you were suggesting that aerialists werent skiers period, which i believe is inaccurate. whether or not you think aerials is true skiing is a matter of opinion, and doesnt have a right or wrong answer.

and your last point brings up another interesting debate...does having good air sense make you a better skier? or just a gymnast. i believe a skier with great air sense, whether it be dropping cliffs or hitting up jumps, is a better skier than your normal ripper on groomers. i think a good air sense is a quality that every skier should have, along with being able to carve like hell, ski bumps, ski pow, etc.

Lanks, you mentioned Jeff Bean as someone who can ski outside of aerials, and that he is who you've based your assumption that most aerialists are real skiers. Honestly, I think he's the exception, and not the rule.

Case in point: Veronika Bauer was a gymnast/trampoline medalist who transfered her acrobatic skills to aerials. And yet, she couldn't even skate to the take-off zone (she was taken there by snowmobile)! That was 1998. Since then she's been given enough skiing-related skills to get around the competition area. I can't say for sure whether she's added other parts of the mountain to her repertoire since.

The entire Chinese aerials program was drawn from their gymnastics group because of the ease in crossing over. And not one of them knew anything about speed adjustment on the in-run which is why their injury rate was so high. Now they're a force to be reckoned with, but they learned the hard way.

Let's not forget that back in the day, freestyle skiing consisted of people who did all 3 disciplines (moguls, aerials, and acro *ballet*). They were well-rounded skiers. Everything is so highly specialized now, I don't think the generalization holds up.

I ski park 80 days a year, and when I leave the park, everything seems way easy and boring. Except for urban. I mean, I like b/c, but only for cliffs and kickers. Snowboarding is funner in pow.

I think in five years we'll start seeing kids how win park comps that couldn't ski down a 45 degree slope with any confidence. But i think backcountry will still rule because it's more fun. I was impressed that last time i was at northstar to see this kid who rips in the park, pull up to the 15ft cliff we were dropping. I gained a lot of respect for him, because there was only 6inches of fresh but he'd rather drop cliffs than ski park all day.

What an interesting debate about aerial skiers... I personally think they are real skiers. However, i would like to say that everyone who can do anything is a real skier. i want to respond to the original topic of this thread. I am good at trees/steeps/big moutain... but i really suck at the park. However there are kids who can't do dick outside the park, but i haven't seen many. I think that anyone who skis park on a powder day is an idiot. of course, your ability to ski outside the park is all determined by your accessibility to the terrain. No one can really be a good big mountain skier if they don't have big mountains.

people who try to put limits on what is skiing and what isnt are retarded. this shouldnt be some philosophical issue. i could only hit urban rails the whole year, and i would still call it skiing.
i love 'real' skiing, but on the east you need to find fun in other areas. and dspin7x, how can you possibly be so stupid every day? are you trying to look retarded?

I think its all in being a good skier in general. In the east I don't really have big mountains to rip but I go backwoods when I blow in the park. I think that to be good at the park you need to be a good skier in general.

when i'm at wachuset where the only decent thing is the park, i ski the park all day long, but if i go to a better mtn i ski the whole mtn, incorporating the park into my runs sometimes...it's fun to mix it up

yah its really about what the conditions are like, obviously in the east most days park is more fun than 'skiing' so i spend more time there, but if conditions are good elsewhere i don't stay in the park. i think ideally ppl should be able to do both but i know that my all mountain performance is prolly lower than somebody that rarely skis park, and vice versa, i think it shouldn't be about who's better, just what u have available. Being well rounded is really important for pro skiers, but for us mortals many of us don't have enough oppurtunities

um yeah I dunno Im sorry joel but in this one case I think dspin is right baout the aerialists. We are discussing wether or not people who ONLY ski park and cant ski a real run and cant ski anythign otehr than park would be similar to an aerialist. Obviously we arent talking about an aerialist who also does other things. We are assuming that an aerialist only does aerials. I dunno... yeah!

well its more just like.. skiing is so much more than just park.. I dunno, someone who only does park cant really consider himself like an elite skier. He is just missing out on so much knowledge of what skiing is. I think that anyone who doesnt know quite a bit about every discipline of skiing shouldnt be considered a true complete skier.

ok, first off wit the except of gymnasats turned aerialsists, n=most of em are exceptional skiers. Second 90% of pros are ex mogul skiers which makes them great skiers all around the mountain so u cant respect people whoare just good in the park cause put them at the top of a slalom ( i hate racing but it is tough), moguls or a big mountain they would shit themselves.

P.S.

Dave chriton was the youngest ever person to make canadian D team for moguls (age 16) and Jon Olsson was swedish National Alpine team as a teenager
