In reference to these businesses their CEO says: "Some of them are the kinds of businesses that would be difficult to sell and therefore, we should just shut down because they create no value for you and they are a distraction for us.”

It would be shitty to see an icon like K2 buried without a chance to be sold...

If I'm reading this correctly, wouldn't all of the brands which K2 owned including FT, Dalbello, Volkl and Line all be affected by this same business decision?

Looks like we have a bigger potential threat to consider here

Both. Losing all of those brands would undoubtedly create a giant hole in the entire industry. However, it would also likely be so eye opening that people wouldn't be able to trust mega cooperations within freeskiing for a very long time.

Hard to say what an exact outcome in a situation like this one would be, if there will even be one. Seems weird through and through

No it definitely will. Newell Rubbermaid bought out Jarden sports and they want to sell off the entire winter sports division. So unless someone buys the winter sports as a whole for a cool 2.8 billion, or sections like either Line, Full Tilt, Volkl, etc. Those companies could be in a lot of trouble. Either way, if you're planning on buying anything from Line, Full tilt, Volkl,Marker,etc buy it fucking now.

Maybe this is a good opportunity for smaller companies to fill the void that will be created if K2 is gone, I love their gear and all but it may not stick around.

Another possible chance that w/ the major brands gone that jerrys buy from = less jerrys??

Eh. Marker bindings suck. Tyrolia, Salomon, and Rossignol are much better. Wouldn't even mind if marker didn't exist.

However losing Dalbello, K2, and FT for boots could be interesting.. there are still Roxa, Fisher, Lange, and what not, but losing the others is a big chunk.

Really I just don't want it to go under and have a bunch of unsponsored athletes from Line, K2, and Volkl.

But then again it would be nice to let ON3P and other small brands have a better chance of gaining business.

Scary stuff.

I was just talking to the Line dude and it's business as usual. We are still driving the van and have TC trips planned. Seth being cut sucks, but K2 has historically had an expensive team and when someone isnt selling skis anymore it's hard to justify paying them.

That would honestly be so rad if that happened, it gives the skier more unique options for skis. In surfing there is a huge handmade quality to each board, imagine if that culture bleeds into skiing somewhat. There are probably downsides I am overlooking, but the initial thought seems skookum as hell!

I was wondering if Seth was getting phased out simply because they stopped doing Seth inspired names on his skis. Like yeah the Annex and pinnacle 118 had his signature on it, but the narrower ones didn't. He even said in an interview he liked his older ski better. I just wish he would produce some content once in awhile.

I don't think you quite get it. This isn't about skiers and teams and how much they cost. It is about the Newell (who bought Jarden) selling or simply killing off companies it inherited with the Jarden merger. Basically if they can't use it to sell product through Wal-Mart or K-mart, it is of no value to them, and their investors. If it doesn't make a truckload of money they don't fucking care about it.

Its true. Time to grow up, kids. Seth Morrison is just a glorified powder skier now who never sends cliffs anymore. You can't expect him to be paid 60k a year just so he can ski around like every other nub out there. Seth Morrison sucks now so he's going to be sponsored by ski companies that historically sponsor shitty skiers, like ON3P or Bluehouse.

If they are going to drop less profitable companies for more cash flow, what companies would they drop? They wouldn't drop Line or full tilt would they?

skierman, agree to disagree. Obviously there would be a time when Seth would no longer be on K2, just like Plake. The question was when would it happen, now?, 5 years from now? 10 years from now? I guess we know the answer. As far as as your statement goes that he does not not send it anymore I strongly disagree with you on that. Watch his runs from the 2014 and 2016 skiers cups. Who knows what the future of K2 is and the other Newell winter sports brands will be, but as far as K2 goes they need to hang on the the skiers in the age range of 35-45, they are the ones with money who will by their product because they grew watching all the best skiers skiing on K2. K2 dropping him will drive buyers from the key demographic away from K2, like many of their business moves dating back to the closing of their factory in 2001 and being bought and sold by several different corporations over the years. Based on his tweet it did not sound like a amicable end of employment, I think that's what most people are upset about.

jerrys keep the lifts running. who do you thinks shelling out the money for rentals, hotels, day tickets, and lodge food. definately aint us doetbag skiers with seasons passes and multiple season old gear.


this could be dark. if k2 and all those companies are not all ready out on their own, then they aint making money. there was an interview or a podcast or something with J.Lev talking about how he knows for a fact the only ski companies making money right now are armada and Line. the rest are owned by investors and rely heavily on their deep pockets to keep the ship rolling. and what high roller investor who owns a fucking tupperware company is going to want to spend money in an industry heavily dependant on weather and seasons that are getting shorter and shorter.

im worried here. for the industry as a whole.

This is really just a small ripple effect of much bigger things going on at K2 (Jarden). Most of which you have all touched on.

I honestly don't believe Seth was "Cut" so much as he was probably trying to renegotiate a contract and lock down some money, and I think all of that business is at a standstill since the acquisition (by Rubbermaid). I'm sure Seth was sick of dealing with that, probably for the first time in his career, but I know he hasn't been too happy with K2 for a while now.

This definitely will have interesting consequences for all the brands, Line, Full Tilt, etc. I just hope someone cool can buy some of these companies rather than "dissolving" them all together. In a way, it could be a great opportunity for these brands to be taken back by core skiers rather than corporate types. I think it's proven that when big corporations try to run ski brands, things tend to go in the wrong direction. We need people making ski products for the love, not just the money. But people need to get paid.

People leave companies all the time. It doesn't mean it's because K2 is going to be sold or dissolved in the near future.

I believe j-lev was talking about free skiing companies, not all companies.
