I had trouble understanding the scale of everything untill I went on reddit lol..

The barge itself is roughly the size of a (American) football field without the endzones and the rocket is like 21 stories tall.

I guess you missed out on all the wonders of the universe and marvels of engineering as a kid? Did you not build lego space ships? Space, the final frontier... none of that? You might might be right to have some concern if this wax taxpayer money but SpaceX is private, Musk can spend his money however he wants, he earned it.

And you could at the actual cost, if the numbers are right on there and Americans actually spent like $140,000,000,000 (140 billion dollars) on alcohol for that single year, if everyone could hold off on drinking for a SINGLE DAY, that'd be like 400 million dollars per day on booze.

I use the top of line Nikon laser scanning confocal microscope for science and I'm not exactly sure how much it costs. But if I decked it out, and while I'm at it, I'll buy a second one, I think it'd still cost less than 2 million dollars. You could give 200 labs two of these things with all the money from JUST ONE DAYS WORTH OF BOOZE MONEY money. By the end of the year there probably wouldn't be a lab in the country without one which would be great, it's a lovely instrument. High school biology classes would probably get the extras and shit, I'd like one for my house.

Humans explore. It's what we do. Entertainment is a waste of money. Unneccesary possessions are a waste of money. Exploration and getting a better understanding of how things are is part of what makes us human.

Alright! Let me break this down: Mars is the best chance for microbial life. If Mars had accumulated just like 50% more mass over the past couple billion years it would have developed an ATMOSPHERE which is a big deal, even if it was dissimilar to our composition on Earth. Still there is a wispy cloud of an atmosphere and all the elements we find on earth. Those who say space is a waste of money equals you think Louis and Clark expedition was a waste. We will end up using any resources we find there.

As for this beautiful piece of hardware in the Atlantic: its legs are welded to the deck of the barge and shipped back to land where the company will conduct hold down firings, consisting of igniting the engines 10 times in a row while monitoring performance on computer screens. If they function then that motherfuckin masterpiece of titanium hardware gets refueled with cryogenically cooled liquid oxygen and ROUND 2 for the first time in human history. This will happen again and again. The big difference between Bezos' BO program is that they are far from producing a rocket design efficient enough to take a useable payload to orbit. So eyes on SpaceX as you are basically seeing the only airplane design able to fly orbitally ever. It seems that no other design can return to earth because only 2% of rocket take off mass is payload.

I was very impressed with that number until I did some quick math and found out that it's only $438/person/year. 8.43/week, or - about the same price as a nice 6 pack or a cheep bottle of wine per week.

In conclusion, we should drink more in celebration of this amazing achievement!

To think humans will even be around in any real capacity, by the time the Sun becomes a factor, is a very optimistic outlook.

Furthermore, the Sun is not a large enough star to go nova, it'll grow to the size of a Red Giant and vaporize Earth in the process, and then most likely shrink down into a white dwarf.
