I believe there are two types of cults. Christianity used to be a cult in the early days but because it's so large it is now a Church. Then there's the 'bad' cult, where the followers give to a leader. I think I messed up those explanations, but oh well.

Anyways, the only posts about religion I've seen end up in 16+ pages of flame wars.

christianity is a cult. its just overrun the world and become acceptable among the ordinary.

i believe that everyone needs to search there own heads and learn through living, and they will eventually figure out what the world is about. but buying into a book that has been written along time ago, with no evidence to back it up, is just ludacris. the only reason why people believe in organized religions so much is because its pounded into there heads from a young age.

if a 90 year old with no knowledge of christianity was introduced to it they would simply laugh at the story.

i'm curious as to how you know jesus was a real person in history. to my knowledge, other than religious documents (the bible and such) which can hardly be called 'historical' there is no historical record.

My parents have never talked to me about God and I've only gone to church a few times. I've done a lot of thinking on my own. And no, I don't think you will go to Hell.

That was a little harsh for me to say, but I'm just tired of these religion bashing posts. I saw some big generalizations and untrue things being said here.

I haven't looked into this because the fact that Christianity is around is proof enough for me, but I think Roman records may have something about Jesus. Also historians don't seem to be debating his past existance.

Some of the stuff in the Bible are meant to be fables, and some of it is history as recounted by the people. Sure there might some factual errors with the history, but history is not what the Bible is about. It's just trying give guidelines for Christians on how to live their life (eg, the Ten Commandments).

here's some intellegent answers.

yes, there is historical proof that Jesus was alive. There were roman (I think it was roman) documents about a man named jesus that was gaining a following. There was another source I think it was from egypt I'm not sure right now but trust me I did a lot of work on religious history 2 years ago.

but I agree that you can't just believe what you're told. Believing in the miracles and everything is your choice, but I don't think you can deny the message and the fact that Jesus was actually real.

Heres another thing that I think a lot of people should read, it's mainly about the new testament and the old testament. I'm catholic I believe in the new testament of the bible, not the old. luckly I was never preached to and came to my own conclusions. I also believe that pre-marital sex is perfectly ok! (not a sin at all). After you read this it'll make sense.

Words about the bible:

Santa Claus is in theory based on a real person.

The name originally came from a dutch bloke named Sinter Klaas. This traditional character was brought to America by settlers in the 17th century.
Over time the name got messed up and became Saint Nicolas.

Then a guy wrote a story called 'A Visit from St Nicolas' which is really The Night Before Christmas, as we know it today. This bought about the idea of Santa being jolly, the reindeers and the whole chimney thing.
A magazine around 1880-1890 added the North Pole workshop and the good/bad children thing.
Then Coca Cola made the final changes, finally depicting what you see as Santa Claus today.

levin is right, the circumsision is a long standing jewish tradition, but not only is it a religious tradition, but it also allows for easy cleaning and mantenince, without the circumcision dirt would get caught under a flap of skin causing bad smells and infection.

unfortunately theres a outspoken minority that rejects science. The accepting majority has no choice but to bow down to the minority in things like disputes about evolution being taught, because people have the right to their own religion. They don't accept evolution so it excluded from the school curriculum and then all catholics are seen as anti-science.

I choose to be an atheist because I do not believe there is such a thing as a 'higher being'.
I was brought up a cristian/catholic. I went to Catholic schools, hell I was even an altar boy at one stage.
But as I grew out of that stage and started to understand science more and more I just simply decided that all the things that supposidly happened in the bible were stories that have been chinese whispered out of proportion.

Like lets say Moses parting the Red Sea. Perhaps that was just a story of some bloke who saw the tides go in and out at great speed during a spring tide or something like that.

Or Noahs Ark.
Where did all the water come from that apparently rained down on them for 40 days and 40 nights? I mean it didn't just *appear*. Even if the ice caps melted it wouldnt be enough to cover all of the earth.

I also beleive that back in the days around Jesus time, science obviously didn't exist to the extent that it does today. So the people of the time had to have SOME explanation of some of the odd occurances that happened that science today has now explained. Say for instance the northern lights, or tidle waves, or ball lightning.
So they assumed (rightly so) that there must have been a more powerful being that is creating all these odd events.

Of course this is just my opinion. I have no problem with religious people. As long as they don't try and force their beleifs onto me... then they can carry on and worship whatever being they like.

I'm not going to get into the religious thing, but the Santa that we know (big, fat jolly guy in a red suit), was actually developed by Coca Cola. We've been studying Coke in one of my classes, and we were all surprised to find that out. Before the fat man he was just a skinny guy with a long beard, and that was Father Christmas or St Nicolas. Just another useless fact for you all!!
