Coming back to skiing after injury

So yesterday while just boming down a run at my home mountain I had a little too much speed coming over a roller went for a little safety grab when I caught my tips and landed on mychest sliding for about 40-50 feet. Ski patrol took me down and I went in the ambulance to a local small ER and they thought I was good to go with a broken thumb and badly bruised ribs but upon feeling nauseous they took me in for a cat scan to find I had sliced open my liver and a number of other things internally. I was airlifted to a tramua unit and got there to have them do the whole thing but avoided surgery and now am recovering well in the hospital. Obviously I won't be able to ski this season but my question is how do I go about getting back on snow next season especially after a serious injury like this?

Wow super scary!! Glad your okay! Take everything slow when you get back...from riding to hitting park. skiing is a high risk sport so make sure you love it enough and have good enough medical insurance to deal with bad falls and injuries! take a little break, go on hikes, hang with girls, anything to take your mind off the fact you cant ski. Try to stay positive and you will be skiing in no time!

Go through what the Dr's recommend for your healing process. I assume you would have to go on some strength / cardio program and ease into it if you are that down for a long long time. As bad as it was...your lucky it wasn't an acl or a major joint which could impact your skiing the rest of your life

Happy it wasn't more serious OP. I'm coming back from ACL surgery, which in a way is worse for recovery, because it going to be so mental for me, on top of the actual dangers. You'll be fine in a few months, rest up eat veggies(organic) ;) just try to find ahobbies during recovery, Books, music etc.

Man, serious vibes for the recovery!

My advice is to take it slow and work back up, I did my ACL & MCL 2 years ago, took 12 months out did all the physio and recovered well but got over excited when I got back on skis. Within 2 weeks back on skis blew both meniscus and re-ruptured my ACL because I tried to ski as if I was fully healthy. If i'd been more sensible and taken it slower to get the tricks back I would have totally avoided the second knee injury. It now looks like I'll never get back to riding 100%. Hitting 30 this year with only 30% of an ACL left and knackered Menisci I can either take it easy or risk a third op and potentially never skiing again, trust me it's not worth it.
Take it slow, stay mindful of where you're at and you'll get back to it eventually, good luck man!

im 3 weeks post-op on ACL graft, both menisci tear, and MCL sprain, and this terrifies me for when i get back on skis!

It gets better. I'm 10 weeks out. Once you start walking you'll start feeling more confident. I don't feel like I'll have an issue coming back to skiing

Good luck to the OP. Glad it was not worse. Like others have said, obey your doctor's orders.

I did my ACL my last year living in Tahoe. I was in grad school the next year, and I only skied a few times. I was definitely timid. The next year I was back to normal, although I did not ski the same way because I was going from skiing 120 days a year to skiing 30.

honestly easier than you think, last october I had a serious longboarding accident without a helmet on and was in the hospital for 1 month/rehab for two learning to walk again and this season was my first season back post accident and I didnt know how it would go but when I went to the hill it was kind of like riding a bike. On rails personally it took a few bails to get the feel back and jumps felt pretty weird back in the air but overall way better than I was expecting.
