Good Idea?

Sk1BumHey man I appreciate your comments. If people don't think its a good idea then I'm sure they'll hate on it. As far as not being practical I disagree. Ive already been able to sell these to normal people out of the Snowbird parking lot and just got a request for several more stools the other day. If you have a island in your house why wouldn't you want dope barstools?

CaptainObvious.The look good man, but they are novelty furniture. They will sell if the price is ok and you hit the right customer base, but your base is pretty narrow. It's limited pretty much to vacation home families with disposable income and younger college kids that was cool shit, not comfy shit. The latter group is very directly impacted by the price point. Broke college kids.

I think it's a cool idea and you've clearly got some skill. If your end goal is to expand into some more sophisticated, ski "inspired" furniture, I think you're on the right track.

Suggestion? Incorporate the skis and boards in a way that doesn't make them a truly functional part of the furrniture. For example, instead of the chair back being made of skis, do a nice upholstered, riveted back and make the sidewalls of the chair out of the skis. Then it's a comfortable piece of furniture that can be used as a main chair, but it's truly inspired by skiing.

-MK-Hate to hate, but this post makes it look like you're looking for a reason to trash on someone. Just because you start a company/hobby to make a little cash doesn't mean you're automatically trying to become a corporate sell out and make millions...

I personally think it's a dope idea to make some money, I've always wanted to make a chair with my buddies and I old snapped skis.

Btw I would recommend finding some dope cushions, or even making some to include with the chairs, they look a little uncomfortable. Other than that, they look super dope.

You have made a lot of claims of what my motives are, but I can tell you they aren't to make millions nor do you understand what it would take to get my business of the ground. Why shouldn't I do it full time if it sustains me? I am enjoying what Im doing and if nothing else this will be a chance to refine my skills.

For the barstools you should just take 5-6 ski tips, cut them perfectly equal in length, and attach side by side with the curved tip at the back so it cups your bum. Skip the back of the barstool and reengineer the foot rest.

nocturnalBecause if you have the drives and you want to start selling or making things full time as your career you can invest your time and energy into something that will be much better. This is a hobby it's not going to sustain you and your family 20 years down the road. I'm telling you to put your time and energy into something that can sustain your family 20 years down the road if that's what your goal here is. If it's just to make money to ski bum year round then by all means do it.

Sk1BumAs i mentioned before I meticulously file every edge and run my hands down every one to make sure there is nothing that could cut you. I also offer a liquid rubber covering for every end of ski to if you would like however the person I sold these to liked the way the seat looked natural. You can make false judgements of their quality from the pictures if you want, but I would not put my name behind something that is janky.

you say they have meticulous craftsmanship...so are the uneven cuts and the caps and the lack of symmetry part of the look? If so, my critique is that I think a cleaner, more even construction would maybe appeal to more people.

For instance--on this--why cut each of the seat pieces at different lengths? Why have gaps between them at various sizes? why are the back pieces all mounted at different places on the piece of wood? Are these all part of a rustic disheveled look that is on purpose?

And I wouldn't say that what I said is "untrue." I guess I should have said that it is MY OPINION that these pieces APPEAR to lack craftsmanship, precision, and quality construction, because the cuts aren't even, hardware isn't placed with symmetry and precision, and there appears to be an inconsistent look to the piece. However, I also followed up to ask if those things were all on purpose.

Then I asked why they would be on purpose. For instance the picture below--why did he choose not to mount the skis evenly on the piece of wood? Why did he choose to put only 1 rivet in the two side pieces, and why on the center ski are the rivets not evenly spaced?

Those are legit questions--if I were in the market for this type of furniture, and I went to his booth at a fair or something, I would ask the same questions. I'd wonder if the person making them just didn't take the time to measure and cut right, or if there is a method to their madness and it is supposed to lack precision because that is the intent of the look.

And don't call them "false assumptions." Lawrence claiming that the seats aren't safe is an assumption, but as far as what I said, Its not an assumption that the cuts don't line up and there isn't even or symmetrical spacing to the hardware.

I'm an adult. I buy furniture. I buy furniture daily. I was giving you tips that your pieces looked unfinished to me because they appeared to lack precision. If everything is on purpose, then I apologize. My preference would be for a more finished and "tight' look I guess.

Sk1BumI took the picture at an angle so it might look crooked but i assure you its not. The center ski of the back three on the seat is angled on purpose but the front and back are straight. I purposefully added this to the design. The backs of both chairs were only secured by one screw when I took the picture so that the buyer could decide the exact angle he liked. Keep in mind that these are the first ones I designed and that I looked over them carefully since I took the picture to make sure everything was in fact symmetrical.
