I just got a letter from paypal...

So I just got a letter from paypal telling me I got denied for like a credit card or something from a month ago but I never applied for one.

And it said my credit score was like 390 or something but I've never had a credit card or a loan in my name. I literally should have no credit at all.

What the fuck should I do? I've never applied to a loan or credit card. And I should have no credit at all. So why do I even have a credit score and how was I denied if I never applied to anything??

It's a scam.

Go to creditkarma.com or freecreditreport.com if you're honestly worried though, to check your score.

If someone has gotten ahold of your personal info though, they may have tried to open accounts and cards under your name and fixing that can be a bitch.

According to Credit Karma a 13 year old Mingg took out a $145k mortgage back in 2009 that was placed in collections in 2011.

So ummm that isn't right....

sounds like a good ol classic American scam. they will ask for personal information and probably bank account info and run with it, so don't reply to it at all I think. Its not different than getting those automated calls about winning a cruise or some shit. Sounds like you're pretty confident that you didn't take out a loan or anything else of that magnitude, so don't do jack shit and just delete it or something.

Hm, I got the same thing not long ago actually.

I moved to the US a few months ago and opened a new paypal account to go with my new situation, and not long after I received that same kind of credit denial letter in the mail. Since I had opened my paypal account recently I figured it was some kind of automated mail and just threw it away without paying much attention to it.

But now you got me worried.

Credditkarma is legit so if it says you took out a loan that went to collections then your identity is definitely stolen and its time to call up a lawyer. If you have that much out for collection then not only is your credit history fucked but you could eventually get warrants out for your arrest. A lawyer should help you figure out your next steps and can work with police to catch the asshole who stole it and then help you get a new social security number and identity. Not gonna be fun but it should help that you aren't too old because its easier to start over. Good luck.

Yeah, that's very unlikely. I sent paypal an email to make sure, but I've been in the states only for a few months, I don't have revenues, no credit card whatsoever (don't even think I could get one), no credit history, and I never gave my social security number to anyone. And I mean anyone, I didn't even need one to open a bank account, that shit is still in its sealed enveloped. I didn't misplace any ID either.

Plus no suspicious activity on my bank account, I exclusively use secure passwords, and never access data-sensitive websites other than on my home network, which is tightly monitored with logs and mac restrictions. So a possible thief would have to go great lengths to steal the identity of someone without any money.

It's still possible tough, but I think those guys usually go for the targets that are either financially interesting or at least not very cautious. I don't think the overly cautious broke kid is at the top of their list.

If they are legitimately opening lines of credit and taking out loans in your name then yes. Unfortunately it is. credit karma is very accurate from my experience.

I just meant that the fact that they are 17 or so now means that they probably don't have much savings or financial obligations so you dont really have to go back and figure out what is yours and what isn't. Also, you won't have wages garnished and you won't likely find yourself in a truly dire situation.

Why don't you send a print screen (obviously with no confidential info) of what you're seeing on credit karma.

And how could a 13 year old even take out a mortgage? Can minors sign legal contracts in the U.S?

lol, the girth of paperwork for a mortgage is bigger than most dicks, and I think they're saying that someone could have stolen her SS# and name (like..an adult) and then taken out a mortgage which is still probably impossible.

This would be helpful but emphasis on the no confidential information part. It could be simply you typed in something wrong or someone somewhere along the line did at credit karma or a bank.

Minors actually can. My parents put me on one of their credit card accounts when I was like 10 and now my "average credit history" is actually effected by how long they have had the account not just how long I have been on the account. Therefore since I've had 1 credit card for about 4 years and they have had their account for about 30 years my average history is 15 years old and I am only 23. I know this is a slightly different scenario but long story short, yes minors can become contractually obligated to certain financial matters.

to even get a credit card with a $200 limit before you're 18 you need someone to co-sign who is over 18. It would literally be impossible to take out a mortgage on a 13 year old's credit.

In your case, it's more likely a confusion of similar names (this happens WAY more then you would think or should happen). It would be seriously difficult to open a mortgage with a stolen identity.

Best best is to with each of the 3 credit companies (or any that are displaying the erroneous account).

The credit industry is a big sham. Your email is more secure then your identity.

I am afraid the paypal customer service is full of retards. I sent two messages asking a very simple yes or no question, so far they both failed to understand it.

Trying a third time.

Oh, and you can't respond to their message. You can't have a conversation with the history showing. You send your question, you get one answer, and that's it. If you need more, you have to start all over again with a new question, that's likely gonna be read by somebody else. This has to be one of the worst customer service I've dealt with.
