For 2 reasons:

This week's announcement of flowing water means it has been present subsurface and liquid for probably billions of years.

NASA's orbiting probes equipped with spectrometers have been detecting annual methane come and go with no clue where it originates. Methane disappears in space, and in the Mars summer season there's methane on the surface. Methane is highly associated with life as a byproduct of breaking down food and wouldn't appear in regular annual cycles with no relation to the sun if it were geological. Boom.

Where's your God now?

I think it does, I think the whole point of the Bible is that God created man and the world in His perfect image, hence the earth being the center of the universe. This completely disproves that by showing theres other life out in the universe the Bible talks nothing about outside our planet. It would be a very long stretch to take out and ignore and rewrite sections of the Bible.

Doesn't it depend on what religion you are? Idk, but I found this little section of an article and it might be of use to some of you

Of course not I'm sure it won't be brought up until we discover it. Because you know if our all powerful God wrote a book written by his word of mouth. I'm sure he wouldn't bring up other planets and forms of life he created. Which again is weird because he said he created man in his image. Yet their may be more forms of life that's not "man" Probably best to just kept all of his creations in the dark about it.

Finding other life in the universe will not convince people that there is no god until that life starts kicking the shit out of humans OR it teaches us what happened before the big bang and how our universe came to be.

Love this argument. Non Judeo-Christian people: "Here, look, the Bible says something that's blatantly untrue." Judeo-Christians: "Well, uhh, obviously that part isn't supposed to be taken literally, duh."

How do you know which parts of the Bible are and are not supposed to be taken literally? Is there a separate book that specifies which parts of the bible are supposed to be taken literally and which parts aren't? And why in the hell would the people who wrote it put it in there in the first place if it wasn't supposed to be taken literally? What is the point of that? To make it as hard as possible to figure out how to live the way God intended us to live and be good people? Did all the people who wrote it think it would be funny to put stuff in there that wasn't supposed to be taken seriously just to fuck with the people reading it thousands of years in the future?

Makes no sense to me why Christians can't just say there are parts of the Bible that are just wrong, and instead try to cover it up using words like "allegory" and phrases like, "you know you're not suppose to read that passage literally."

Also I just looked it up circles are flat and spheres are round....... so not only does it not imply that the earth is round but the Bible also contradicts itself yet again.

The Bible is a story just like most other origin stories passed down by humans. I bet thousands of years from now it will be looked at the same way we (white westerners) view indigenous beliefs on how the universe and man kind appeared.

People can believe whatever they want. But what gets me are religious people who strictly follow Christianity (especially Catholics - they're the worst) and are wicked uptight about certain components of the Bible, then flexible on others. Catholics seem to argue they see the one true interpretation of the Bible and how they adhere to founding principles as the Bible was written thousands of years ago. But for some reason, modern day science and technology can somehow allow them to slightly change this interpretation???

I worked with a Catholic gal this summer who kept telling me God is "everything" the universe, and has always been and will always be. Great. Tell me Catholics hundreds of years ago would accept that before we discovered the Big Bang Theory, Evolution, and accurate measures of dating the universe, Earth, and life on Earth. Therefore you just completely invalidated your guiding principle of adhering to the strict version of an interpretation as it was meant to be centuries ago.

Dispirits who claim we gotta stick to basic, early principles and not deviate...then realize how dumb that is as human knowledge expands, then selectively choose what parts they are more lenient on. Religious hypocrites, fuck off!

I noticed you are describing the Christian God and denote god based on one single group of ancient writings.

Since you are a skeptic of God would it not make sense to study all religions that speak of God? Not just one writing from one group of people? Since you know that evolution exists wouldn't it make sense to examine God within the context of evolution?

Not really sure why you are being such a douche in this thread. People have different beliefs than you....get over it. I'm Christian and I hope we find life on other planets. That would be amazing. Nowhere does it state that we are the only life. Nowhere does it state that more life can't be out there.

Yes but imagine we get the DNA of this other life and find out we're related to it. That would mean we didn't actually come from Earth and I'm pretty sure that would disprove Christianity.

All possible. If you accept the theory that life started in the ocean after millions of sequential molecular associations, you can imagine that on a planet with completely different environments, those molecules could be wildly different, leading to unimaginably different life. Like, beyond our imagination. A pretty standard example I've heard is substituting silicon for carbon as the backbone of alien 'organic' matter...

Though science may suggest that god does not exist, it does not prove it. This debate falls under "trans-science."

This paper is by one of the most important and influential scientists in American history. If you want to get a better idea of the roles that scientists and science should play in society, this is a good place to start. A good reality check for people who are too convinced of their beliefs.

You could also consider the idea that maybe non carbon forms of life exist and thrive on the planets that we consider inhabitable due to no atmosphere, water,etc... Who fucking knows what is really possible and out there... we have a tiny glimpse and we still know jack. I'm sure government bodies cover up many unfathomable discoveries along with our already limited knowledge.

Burden of proof is an argument of its own, but if you're going to say that scientific fact disproves the existence of god, you need to substantiate that.

It disproves the Christian Bible is what I meant. Not every religon ever, but at the same time it is implied because none of those religions have ever proven to be real. So there's no need and for me disproving something that's never been proven.

It's hard to take you seriously because Genesis does not equal the bible. The bible is a collection of many books written throughout time by many authors.

The stuff in Genesis doesn't discredit the writings of King Solomon, for example.

2) but your claim was saying it was a fact. So yes...you do need prove if you are saying they are facts.
