New Commenting system live for Beta Testing

Enable "Threaded Comments Beta"

Check something that has comments.

Notes:

1) If you like classic mode, select "Sort by Time" and you'll get nesting as well as Chronological comments

2) Only one layer of nesting (replying to another comment) is currently enabled. We can go to a max of 4 layers deep if this is deemed needed

3) GUI is disabled by default, but you can enable it if you want to get all memey on a comment section

4) Low voted comments are hidden by default, but at the bottom of the comment box you can disable this so you can bathe in the hate if that floats your boat

Its a pretty slick update. Somewhere between the old system and what we have in the forums. I'm really excited.

VAPEOREONSeems like i just posted this in another thread where someone had a problem with the ns hivemind. The karma/(post score) system discourages honest discussion because it sets up a repercussion for posting anything that ns doesnt totally agree with, aka hivemind. Downvotes arent used to hide bad posts or spam (mods can do this), they are used to put down unpopular opinions that NSers dont like. Its weird because just recently you were promoting people to voice their opinions (like the drop threads) and then you implement a system against them. It also works in the reverse way as people begin to purposely attempt to get high rated posts (& top threaded comments) by only voicing popular opinions (circlejerking) creating a worse hivemind. It also devalues comments without scores. While this feature is being used more lately, this problem is still rampant in sites like reddit/kym/others. The reply feature is nice though.

Upvotes and downvotes don't effect your karma. Only the actual karma rating does anything.

I think taking the anonymity out of it will give us more honest ratings.

Less kids trolling and down voting just to be dicks.


I would be interested to see who upvotes what. Maybe showing downvotes wouldn't be so good but seeing who likes what you post would be kind of cool! I can imagine that would be a pain to implement or whatever and probably will never happen, just my 2 cents.

Right now, can admins/mods see how content or posts are rated or anything? Just curious!

I was referring to the comment karma (upvotes/downvotes). I guess i should have referred to it as the comment rating system or something. I didnt even remember NS had account karma tbh. Did you read the post? Turns out you were the one who i replied to last time so looks like ive told you this twice ahah. Im literally only talking about the post rating/hiding/threading system that discourages honest posting/creates hiveminds. Anyway w/e.

Well you said something about karma so I assumed you were talking about the only thing called karma on this website.

I think people will say what they want regardless if it gets upvotes or downvotes, it works great on reddit.

Was the reddit thing sarcasm? Reddit has probably one of the worst forum communities of any large modern day forum. The system works well for content because the good content is aggregated to the top, but it works entirely against itself for comments.

You just complained about this yesterday talking about NSers getting shit on for opinions. This happens because comments that are rated down are hidden and discouraged. This means people only see the uprated ones and people are encouraged to make these comments by the upvotes. Which leads to people only seeing/thinking about those posts which creates a prevailing opinion (hivemind) against anything different. Also reddit works very poorly for small community/subreddits because of this. Anyway im done.

It only getting hidden in comments, not the forums. Not sure if that changes anything for you.

The reason we want the comments to get hidden is because sometimes people just say dumb shit like "this sucks, youre gay" and its just stuck in the comments of some kids video. That shit should be eliminated by the community via downvotes.

Do you guys think it might take away from forums? So hypothetically say someone lands a quad and an article gets posted about it. Since this format is better for discussion, do you think people will just discuss it there rather than have a thread in ski gabber to discuss?

I doubt it'll have a significant impact. Someone will make a thread if something like that happened ya know?

Yet it is nice. It's also nice that one may choose to hide, or not hide the lesser comments.
