What's good homies?

I will be a senior in HS this upcoming year and am looking to up my wardrobe game a bit in preparation for college. Anyone have tips? What can I buy without cashing out on designer shyt to look classy? Shoes, pants, shirts, input on anything is appreciated.

Most important things to consider are that college is expensive and that you will not care what any of your classmates think about your high school wardrobe in just a matter of months. You don't get paid to go to school and your school wardrobe will not get you any advantage on school or job application. I recommend saving your money until you need something or get a job interview.

Seriously this. I have a fairly large wardrobe (I've been the same size for years) and I'm going to purge a ton because I've noticed that I can survive with a pair of black vans (very minimal and simple), my red wing 1907 brown moc toe boots, a pair of black and dark blue jeans, a pair of khakis, and a few plain tees and button downs. If you stick with neutral colored basics (black/grey/white) and a few other things, you can do a lot. For example, wear the same black shoes and black or blue jeans, with a different simple button down (I prefer grey button downs for some reason), you have a ton of different combos. Add a simple hat or beanie and a jacket, and that gives you even more options

Don't be a cheapass on the jeans go to Saks or Nordstroms and find something nice on sale and make sure they fit other trousers or shorts you can usually find online cheap if you have an idea just search for it but good denim is harder.

Shirts use your own taste and creativity can't help ya there but you want some nice t's, polos, and long sleeve button ups.


Cowboy boots and boat shoes for the feet.

5 OCBD's in blue, white, grey and a couple others.
5 plain tees.
1 pair common projects achilles, low grey.

Steer clear of trendy brands and stick to timeless looks if you're not trying to shell out. Like others have said, button downs, chinos, well-fitting denim, and clean, solid color sneakers are a safe bet.

I'm going away to school this year too. I'm all about khaki shorts or khaki jeans and then either a decent looking t, short sleeve button up, flannel, sweatshirt, stuff like that. I used to not care how I dressed and then I realized girls go crazy if you actually put in effort to look nice and it helps a bit haha. Oh also nike Janoskis are dope.

Find some of those bullshit button-down v-necks that have like 2 buttons at the collar and you will be the most stylish fucker around. The only other advice I have is drink lots of whiskey.

Pastel colored longsleeve button downs with any khaki shorts (not cargos). Its a solid look but don't over do it with colors like Vineyard Vines model. That is, if you want the prep style look only thing is, everyone think your Dad has a yacht and hands you money.

How about we talk about things to avoid:

First and foremost, cargo shorts (and cargo pants, but that should just go without saying). Stay far and clear away from them. 5 pockets on everything except gym shorts (which you should only wear to the gym).
Anything American Eagle, Holister, A&F, and all those stores. Not cool. That being said, you can sometimes find some good stuff at good prices at H&M as long as you stay away from the super tight, emo, and metrosexual stuff.
Acid wash/light jeans, nope. There's a reason dad jeans have the name. Dark and slim/skinny is the way to go.
Idk where you live or where you're planning on going to college but you probably shouldn't get cowboy boots. Or "work boots" (Timberlands), for that matter. You're in college, not trade school. Get yourself some fine, low profile leather boots, waterproof and treat that shit, and you can wear them all year long all over the country as long as it isn't too hot and look good while you're at it.
Flat brims (and most hats), nope.
Baggy shirts, nope. If you're like most people when you shop for button ups, you should find the one you think fits then get the next size smaller. Especially if you're skinny.
Boat shoes. For Pete's sake, they are not classy - they're preppy. Please learn the difference ASAP. Unless you're in a frat or sail on a regular basis and live on Cape Cod or come from a lot of money and like to show it off, just avoid dressing preppy and save yourself the negative social stigma. Same goes for polos, especially bright colored ones. Keep the golf shirts on the golf course. Chukkas are a great option for footwear that you can wear with virtually any outfit. Jeans, khakis, chinos, etc and as long as your colors aren't clashing, they'll look great. (That's something worth knowing too - what color pants you can wear with what color shoes. Basically just don't mix black and brown but there are exceptions and other rules too). For something more casual and if you want to show more personality, find a solid, muted color, low profile skate shoe and you'll be set for everything casual.

To conclude, don't just buy expensive stuff and think you'll look good. Odds are you won't. Don't be afraid to bargain shop and comb the clearance sections in nicer stores, either. Look online and even in magazines (do people even read magazines anymore?) for what the latest trends and styles are for men's clothing and go from there. If you look at enough you'll just know when things look good.

I go for comfort but try to look presentable

Khaki shorts or pants
T shirts and in in the winter, a hoodie
Mid calf socks
Nike Janoskis (I actually skate)
And when my hair gets long I wear a snapback (facing forward usually)

I just dont like dressing preppy, I prefer loose clothes, not tucked in and tight on my skin, it makes me sweaty. Forsoccer we dress for home games and while others go all out with vests and shit I just wear khaki shorts, a button up and a tie, dressing up doesnt fit my layed backand simple personality. Wear what feels good to you and how you want, just cause kids wear this doesnt mean you do to if you dont like it.

IMO, for those brands, they can have some great shirts and coats but if you're trying to dress moderately classy, they're not your best option. Their pants probably won't fit you well unless you have a dad bod and you can find better shirts elsewhere. They do make great flannels, but if you're like me (skinny), it's hard to find one that fits well there. If you're looking to find something to go hiking in, they're a great option. Really durable, quality stuff - more so clothes for people that care more about that than style. You should generally only wear clothes for their intended purpose.

Don't worry about the brands as much as just getting a clean streamlined look. Get shit you like, find a deal and rock it. You could honestly hit up good will and come out looking good. There's something on every budget. $ does not automatically equal style. It can help sometimes but if you make some smart choices you can crush it for minimal investment.

Also nobody is really going to be like "Remember how good he dressed senior year?" so don't sweat it too much. And for the most part people in college stop giving a fuck. Sweat pants refugee mode. If you have clean pants and a decent shirt and look like you've slept sometime in the last 72 hours you'll be one of the classiest guys out there.

Exactly. Nothing is more American than making cheap shit on the premise that we can continue exploiting people/resources long enough for them to remain cheap enough to replace endlessly.

It's funny/unfair because those $400 shoes are cheaper in the long run.

i honestly don't know anyone who wears vans casually and has had to get new ones in a short period of time. also, they have a great customer service center, and if you buy shoes and they fall apart in a few months, they'll send you a free pair

Good skate shoes are durable AF in my exp.

I like to wear dress shirts unbuttoned with a t shirt underneath. Like the prep after school look
Except i wear black nike athletic pants instead of khakis or jeans, but they are slim fit and look good with my black adios and white laces.

Buy some good slim fit long arm dress shirts.
My favorite brand is hugo boss, they are designed to fit the klitschko brothers and they fit so well.
Im wearing an ocean blue boss button up dress shirt with a beautiful grid pattern right now that looks like a 400 dollar shirt but was only 150 and i got it on sale for 70.
