Whats up with flat 3s?

Most of the "flat 3s" I've been seeing lately are just backflips thrown a little over the shoulder.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is not a flat 3:

In my opinion they look nothing alike. Why are weirdly thrown backflips confused so much with flat 3s? I don't get it.

My entire flat 3 life has just been a backflip with a japan or safety grab. Im not sure if It actually does much or if it just appears to do so.

Correct, first one is a backflip and Pep actually did a flat 3.

I mean really like 95% of "flat 3's" you see are just ever so slightly off-axis backflips.

Glad im not the only one that has noticed this. This is a lot like the flat vs rodeo debate though too. When a flat is done properly it acctully looks like a flat not any thing else. Peps was clearly a flatspin in that video same with this

I hear ya. Everybody at my mountain believes that a flatspin is basically an off axis backflip japan. They don't see the "Flat" part in flatspin.

Most people that do claim flat anything are just doing rodeos, even spinning more than three. If your head ends up underneath your feet during your rotation it's probably NOT flat - flat is like cork, it's not a FLIP it's a SPIN.

If it's just a backflip with a Japan or a little wobble, it's always been called a "wackflip" and I would encourage all you to remain calling it such. Kids these days just don't know how to call tricks (we all sucked at it at one point) and whenever anyone brings up the wackflip here people are all just "I dunt care it looks cool I'll call it flat 3 if I want hurrr durr dur"

Bring on the haters! I'm old now, And you're all wrong and I don't care. ;)

I call it flat 3 just because that's what it's been called and it will continued to be called. Keep it that way, if it's an actual flat call it a TRU flat.

From experience I can say that whackflips are much much easier than true flats. First time trying a true flat I looked like a helicopter that got shot down and slammed hard. First time trying a whackflip I landed on my feet. Whackflip is scarier but you'll probably land it every damn time you throw it- just like a backie.

I forgot how to flat 3 after I wrecked myself over shooting one, and I kind of relearned them but they just look like Lincoln loops set back a little bit

this is part of the reason why I don't think tricks outside of the pipe should be called "flat" anything.

Rodeo 3 makes way more sense than flat 3, and the difference b/w flat 5 and rodeo 5 is pretty minimal most of the time

Sorry man, I didn't know. Haven't seen a thread like this in my time here and couldn't really find what I was looking for.
Just thought I'd make the thread to clarify because I've been wanting to try some new shit on jumps and I thought others could benefit from it too. But if there are other threads that have this same shit, hit me up with a link so I can check them out!

a flat 3 is basically a rodeo 3, its not flat if they throw it like a backflip, they need to set it like a rodeo

A rodeo 3 is rarely even called a trick, but it's more of an off axis back flip or a "wack flip". A true flat 3 should be flat, IE. feet not over the head at any point. rodeo's are similar, but inverted at some point.

Seriously tho , the definiton of flatspins is kinda poor.

An really flat flatspin 3 will posibly get called an bio 3. Same with bigger flatspins, there isn't really a difference when they are executed properly since legit flatspins are definetly set forward.

Right, flat spins are inbetween rodeo and bio, it's kinda like this, rodeo (off axis flip to the side with 180-360-540 etc. flatspin, similar to rodeo, but at no point are you inverted, easy to confuse with rodeo. Bio, next in line to the flatspin, again, not inverted, however the off axis point of the rotation comes later, similar to a cork, but forward in motion

All you guys are dumb saying flats and rodeos are the same and a true flat is thrown forward. A true flat spin is thrown back and it should be a flat rotation. Look at how pep sets his trick he leans back and to the side but manages to keep his body flat and feet below his head. As soon as you start to go forward this is when it turns into rodeo/bio's. Granted many people (including myself) call flat as off axis back flips a true flat spin should not be thrown forward. Also a lot of these "tru flats" that people have been posting here aren't even off axis they're simply a 3 with there feet pull up and grabbing like a high safety.

The big distinction between corks and rodeo can be defined by considering the vectors of which way a body is rotating.

Rodeos have a flip which is kind of to the side. a left rodeo involves flipping over the right shoulder. A left cork or left dspin on the other hand involves flipping toward the left shoulder, usually more like back up the hill but since you're spinning left the flip is going up into the left shoulder.

A lot of more stylish corks are set by people leaning into the carve. A lot of the best rodeos are set by carving one way and flipping into that direction but spinning into the other way(ex: B-Dogs rodeo bow and arrow).

Rodeo 3, flat 3, lincoln, wackflip or whatever... It's my favorite. It is actually easy but looks nice. I think I do it same way but it looks a rodeo one day and somehow it looks just a backflip another day. I want to know how to make it more rodeo-like. Maybe I should throw more forward? or more side flip?
