New setup for Touring and Resort POW days?

Hello NS!

Its been awhile but I needed advice and last time I got advice from NS on a ski, it worked out great!

So here's what I need help with, I'm looking to get a new ski setup for this winter and I'm looking for a ski that I can use at the resort on powder days but I am also looking for a ski that I can do back country and possibly even a couple touring trips with. It would probably be about a 50% powder resort, 40% back country and 10% touring (I'm talking like hut trips).

So here's a little about myself: I am originally from the east coast and now live in Colorado. I currently own a pair of center mounted Liberty LTE's that, with the combination of whatever ski I get, will be used primarily for park days and resort days where we haven't gotten much snow. I have never done touring or back country, I've pretty much only done resorts, but I will be going up with people who have been doing this for awhile. I'm about 5'9"-5'10" and weigh about 165 lbs. If I'm missing any information let me know!

Now here's the tough part, I have a pro deal so brands I'm looking to choose between include:

Black Diamond
Blizzard
Dynafit
Icelantic
K2
Line
Rockey Mountain Underground
Rossignol
Salomon
Voile
Volkl

yep

im too biased with ski brands to offer balanced advice on which ski to get (esp without more info) but id highly recommend just getting a good all around BC ski, preferably on the light-ish side, from that list, and then sticking some guardians or another burly AT binding on it

personally i opted for the tyrolia adrenalins, and im super happy with them for inbounds and out of bounds skiing. little more stack height than the guardians but lighter. but i don't see tyrolia or head on your list

Do you want to go lighter weight or areyou happy on somthing a little heavier?

one of my fav pow skis from next season is the salomon MTN lab. Nice an lightweight but you can still drive that ski hard which is not somthing you can do on alot of light skis

Stick a kinhpin on them and they would make an awsome resort/touring setup.

Of all those brands, there are a ton of skis that will work for what you are describing. Don't go overboard on trying to save too much weight if you are only going to tour every once and a while. Get a true alpine ski, not some super light wimpy ski that will fold when you are pushing it in-bounds. Get something around 110-120 underfoot. For me, that's the Liberty Origin at 116mm underfoot. For bindings, you should get a high DIN AT binding, like the Tyrolia Adrenalin or Salomon Guardian. Personally, I have and love the Adrenalin 16. Skis like an alpine binding, but you can slap some skins on and go for a quick tour.

Depends what kind of rider you are. If you're more into buttering around and tossing little cliffs and whatnot I would look into next years pollard skis from line. They got the cloud core from the Magnum Opus last year which my friend is wet over. They are lighter than my opus's with a fatter waist. But now all shapes in the pollard line will have it and I believe they made them a little stiffer? Could be wrong though. But dope line of deep pow sticks if you're looking for a playful ski

The mordecai could be a great option. Nice and light but you can still ski the super hard. Good consistent edge edge and plenty of float.

One me question I have guys is why you all recomend binding like the gaurdian and duke. In my opinion the kingpin is the best option. Lighter and lower to the ski then any frame style yet they feel as solid as any alpine binding. Boots may be the limiting factor I guess but if your investing in boots at the moment go for somthing tech compatible. You will see a lot more "tech" stif on the way.

you guessed right, it's the boots. the typical skier, especially on NS, isn't going to have tech boots rather than alpine boots, especially if they ski hard at all. i won't get tech boots until more than half my skiing is skinning, or i win the lottery. boots are super expensive man. it makes way more sense for OP to get a track AT binding

also, for the record, i see the guardians recommended a lot, which i support, but the adrenalins need to be mentioned way more-- i chose them over guardians. and the dukes i hear lots of negative things about

The kingpin has had a lot of issues with the toe pins coming out. Also, while I love that the kingpin has a real heel, tech toes still scare me and I like to have a solid toe piece. Also, you can use alpine boots with the Adrenalin, unlike the kingpin.

There were a couple of early issues but they have been sorted. I know what you mean about the tech toe but it's the heel which makes the toe work. By having no twisting force from the heel the toe is put under far less load then a tradional tech binding. They are din rate so the toe will release at the same rate as any alpine binding.

I hear you. DIN rated means DIN rated. I am very interested in the kingpin but might wait a bit until I know for sure that the issues have been sorted out. Also, they are hard to find and expensive.

Regarding boots, I haven't found an A/T boot with the performance and fit of my Langes. I'm a Lange man, through and through. Mine do have rubber soles and a tour mode, but it barely offers any touring movement and they are quite heavy.

The OP mentioned he's looking for just one setup that would be used for touring maybe 10% of the time, so I still think he'd have a baller setup with a 16 DIN alpine style binding with a tour mode, like the Adrenalin. Just my 2 cents though.

It woul be an ok setup but let down by the boots. One of my favourite boots currently is the K2 pinnacle. Everything you nee in one boot. Apline sole with tech inserts so tey will work with all bindingS. The walk mode is decent and they ski really hard Still. Can be used from park to big MTN. Yes they are heavy but that is the slight hit you take but they would make an amazing all round boot.

For bindings go with the Dynafit beast over the king pin. I would recommend you choose a tech because you use the ski to tour most of the time and might as well save the weight especially since they are only a deep snow ski.

If you do want to go with an AT binding they are all similar with different pros and cons all based on personal preference.

In my opinion if you are touring at all you should at least be in a boot with a walk mode. They ski as well as any fixed cuff boot these days so really there is no reason to hold your self back even if it's a small amount of touring. Boots like the k2 pinnacle are a great option a they offer tech inserts in a boot you can still use in any binding and ski as had as you like. Boots are changing guys.

The beast and king pin have the safest release system and they are both in 13 din versions for next year.

Yes the beast is lacking a 0 degree walk mode but how often are you actually traveling across the flat

I feel safer on Beasts over Kingpins because Dynafit's design is a lot simpler and with less major moving parts. And how they do test every pair sent out as apart of their quality control.

In all honesty going into last season I was stoked with the king pin but with all of the recalls in the first year of production and all the moving parts I don't have trust in the king pin anymore that it will be safe in a backcountry situation where equipment failure is the last thing you want

If you or someone has information to resort my faith in the king pin please do because I do like the concept

You see my main issue with the beast is it uses the old pin style heel. It's this pin system that leads to the lack of hold on the boot. The two pins allow for a degree of lateral movment and even with the improved toe on the beast I don't personally feel it can quite compare to the lingpin.

The he apline style heel ultimates the play making the overal feel of the kingpin much closer to that of an alpine binding. Add the fact it's fully din compatible I think it's a easy choice. I'm personally going to use them as my everyday/touring binding and I'll swap over to the new fks for park days. For everything but park I am happy riding the kingpin.

I don't agree at all, from personal experience. Save your money OP and put it towards more ski days.

You would probably only notice any difference if you were skiing a slalom course on the kingpin or beasts doesn't matter when your lugging 25+ kilos of gear around and the dins cranked to 14-15 to take the impact from sending it. I feel safer on beasts than pivots to be honest. Even though I've had failure on the toe pieces with the mechanisms kind of a pain in the ass(always carry tools and small hex keys for those bindings)

Guardian 16s would be the one with a good set of Pomoca Climb pro glide TIPON those things are the shit. And just pick up a Pair of On3p billy goats and you would be set or Rocker2's in 108

wow, so many good responses, thank you all, a lot of good info on here, +K to you all! I feel like im almost more confused now haha. A lot of discussion being placed on what binding i should look into, it seems a lot of favoritism has been placed on either the king pin or the guardian. Some people looking recommending the dynafit bindings, but i just feel like theyre more oriented towards touring. When I say 10% touring I mean like MAYBE 1 trip a year.

I should mention what boot I am rocking. As of now I have the Salomon SPK, which, I KNOW isn't much of a touring boot but I just love that boot because of the rubber toe box. That boot is heaven sent because before that boot I would get toe band every single year.

As for what kind of skier I am, I am definitely would do some butter skiing, as well as some small cliff drops and maybe popping of some rollers (I would love to throw a backy on a soft roller on a soft powdery day). I was leaning towards a ski on the lighter side but can still go hard. Maybe the pollards or the sir francis bacons? Or as someone mentioned and REALLY want, I may just splurge and go with the Libery Origins as I love my LTE's. And then for bindings I would throw on some guardians or king pins.

What do you guys think?

To be honest I would maybe suggest just sticking with the alpine binding you have and use trekkers for any touring you end up doing.

If your sticking wit the spk and touring will be a tiny percentage of use stick to a tradionaly alpine setup.

If you find you are enjoying touring upgrade boots an bindings at the same time.

ski wise I really enjoyed the mordecai last season. You should be able to find my review in the gear section. The pepitor wS really fun but very soft and buttery. On3p Jeffries could also be a good option. I really like the rocker 122 and bentchetlers if you are looking to go wider.

The Origins are amazing. Lots of good skis in that category, but you can't go wrong with the Origin. Great in deep pow, and surprisingly fun as hell on hardpack, like groomers.

If you want to keep with your current boot, go Guardian or Adrenalin if you want a tour mode. But if you are only going for like 1 tour this upcoming season, just slap on some dependable alpine bindings. They will fit your current boot, sit nice and flat on the ski, and are more durable than something with a tour mode because there are less moving parts. You won't be able to use the Kingpin unless you get new boots with tech soles.

For just 1 or 2 tours, you can use the Alpine Trekkers as TomP mentioned. No reason to get a binding with a tour mode unless you are actually going to use the tour mode feature. Otherwise, you are just spending extra money for something less durable.

If you are not familiar, Alpine Trekkers are made by BCA (Backcountry Access) and sort of turn your alpine bindings into something you can skin with. I believe Tanner Hall uses them still. Lots of people call them "Day Wreckers", but you can live with them for the little amount you'll be touring.

In an ideal world, you'd have an alpine setup one one set of skis with your alpine boots and alpine bindings, and then a tour setup on a different set of skis with a touring bindings and touring boots, but that gets expensive.

Which pivot are you using the 14 or the 18? If it's the 14 then they are not to heavy. You should be fine and if you already like the bindings you may as well stick with them. If your on the 18 that toe is quite heavy but still just for a few occasional tours you will be fine and will wnjoy the burly binding one the way down.

hey guys, thanks again for all your respnses, so im going to get the liberty origins. Now i'm just stuck between two choices.

fks pivots (i would go with the lighter ones) with alpine treckers

or

the tryolia adrenalin.


im kindve leaning towards the adrenalins for 2 reasons. 1. I feel like a/t bindings would be much smoother that having to deal with those trekkers, but i could be wrong here, I have never tried them, I'm gonna go research some reviews on them. And 2. if i were to do the pivots and the trekkers I would have to order through 3 different companies (liberty, rossi, and BCA) where if I just got the adrenalins, I could just order them both through liberty.

but if you guys think the trekkers really are smooth and that I may have issues using the adrenaline when skiing hard in the resorts, i would probably go with the pivots and trekkers...

reading some reviews, ive found that the trekkers arent best with pivots because of the turn table heel, if you guys think i should do the trekkers, which bindings do you recommend?

Trekkers work fine with any alpine binding, including turntables. Anyone who says differently hasn't set theirs up right or is just spreading second hand reports from others who haven't set them up right.

Buy whatever you like and go skiing.

a lot of reviews i read said to stay away from look and rossi pivots with the trekkers because of the turn table and because of the shape of the toe piece. apparently it doesnt fit int he front toe piece nicely

If you are planning any type of multi day trips I would go tryolia adrenalin.
Even though I have haven't used trekkers before they seem like for a person who doesn't know if they want to be in the BC and want to try it out (really short trips).
Seems like your gonna be using them more than just trying them out.

yeah, im pretty much set on not getting the trekkers. now im just trying to decide between the adrenalines or the marker tour f12's

right now im leaning towards the f12's a little bit more

That's the binding (f12) I plan on buying for my AT set up here in a few weeks.

tomPietrowskiIn my opinion if you are touring at all you should at least be in a boot with a walk mode. They ski as well as any fixed cuff boot these days so really there is no reason to hold your self back even if it's a small amount of touring. Boots like the k2 pinnacle are a great option a they offer tech inserts in a boot you can still use in any binding and ski as had as you like. Boots are changing guys.

thats a big issue with AT boots, no? There isnt the same selection as Alpine boots, and you might get stuck with a shitty boot that is the boot that fits you best.



In any case my advice would be to get some used JJs or Bentchetlers, slap your normal bindings on there, throw some Daywreckers(Alpine Treckers) in your pack along with some metal wire and a few zip ties, and take the $1500 you saved by not buying boots, tech bindings, and new skis and get go on some last minute road trips chasing storms. After all, youre only touring 10% of the time, and the one or two times you go hut touring you arent going far because you wont be in touring shape anyways.

Do you think alpine bindings are really that much better than touring bindings? I was thinking, in the case of the F12's, that touring in trekkers would be much worst than A/T bindings, but skiing downhill in A/T bindings would be that much worst than regular alpine bindings. Hopefully that made sense haha

Itat have used to have been but now you can find freeride boots an at boots in a variety of shapes and fits so there will be somthing for everyone.

There is custom shell in some and some like the k2 even come in free differnt lasts from 98-102 so these days getting a suitable boot which fits is easier then ever.

Op. Binding wise I would go adrenaline. They are a solid choice, light and close to the ski. I did find the locking mechanism a little annoying but not somthing which really caused a problem.

The f12 epf is also a good choice and they actually can take some real abuse but I would prefer the slightly more robust construction of the adrenaline.

Thanks for your feedback tom, yeah im really stuck between these two, but the increased strength of the adrenalines would be nice. I was reading a couple horror stories about the f12 where the heel would explode on some impacts on but i havent read many bad things about the f12 EPF. The decreased weight and even closer to the ski would be nice, but if I knew that the adrenaline was significantly stronger I would probably go with that.

I havent read really any horror stories about the adrenaline breaking..

why are you leaning toward the f12s as opposed to adrenalins? arent they a little weaker?

yes, they seem a tad weaker. But from some reviews I was reading that the f12 EPF is really quite strong. But with it I would get a decreased stack height and a decreased weight. I thought that might be a better choice but if you guys think I should really go a stronger binding overall I would go with the adrenaline

okay, im leaning back towards the adrenaline again then haha. I guess your right, i would rather sacrifice some weight and have a binding I can ski more confidently without the chance of breaking.

And the king pin, you were saying, wouldnt be a good option because I dont have a boot with a walk mode? I ride park boots, the salomon spk, which are heaven sent for me because that rubber toe box has cured my toe bang

Yeah kingpins are out of the question due to boots. I know you like your spk but honestly there are so many better boots out there. I tried some spk's again while I wa testing the ghost last year and it's quite shocking how much boots have come in since the spk. I lived that boot for years but things have moved on. Next time look at the new generation of freeride boots. A din terms of toebang a good custom footbed is usually the most effective way to combat that issue.

But it for now really see whichever binding you can get a deal on. Consider te gaurdian too but they may be more out of your price range.

yeah, personally i'd def recommend going a little heavier (+ a little stack height, you say) in exchange for more confidence on the way down. i highly recommend the adrenalins

yeah i may have to look into a new boot later this year, I do have custom footbeds.

would you go with the guardian over the adrenaline 16? I havent read the greatest things about the guardian, but then again I havent been looking into that one too much. i get pro deals from salomon too so I can really go with any of the A/T bindings wether it be the adrenalines, the guardians or a marker binding.

If I was going for a frame binding it would be the guardian. But that's not to say things like the adrenalin are no good they are still a quality product. I just trust the feel and hold of the guardian more. They really do ski like a alpine binding which is a big plus if these are also your everyday ski.

thats good to know, I wasnt even looking at the guardian. You think i should go with the 16 or 13 din?
