Layering

I'm planning on wearing a Saga hoodie for skiing this year. What do you suggest to put under it. I will be using a jacket for anything under 20 degrees tho.

Then I suggest wool. Wool is fabulous and keeps you warm when wet. I nice sweater under a shell is all I need down to -15 C before I need to get another layer.

Capilene 2 Baselayer
R1 Hoodie Insulation
Nano Air Insulation
Alpha SV Shell

The whole thing ways around 50oz and I've worn it in -65F. Get yourself some real clothes and be resourceful

I wear a hoodie no matter what the conditions are. I wear an old insulated patagonia windbreaker underneath, and it keeps me dry and warm all day. The hoodie gets soaked, but I don't even notice it.

Tall tee , back protection,talltee,small hoodie , softshell jacket , hoodie.

Worked out well when skiing in -17°C this year at wind speeds of 40 km/h .

Only major problem is your hoody gettiing totally wet when going into the lodge... Espacially when its snowing

Butter. Just slather yourself with it like people do when they cross the channel. Use enough and you won't even need to buy a jacket.

First something skin tight like an Under Armour long sleeve then some kind of thermal over it. After that maybe a tall tee then your hoodie. It all depends on what the wind is like and what kind of skiing your doing. If your hiking a rail and you know your gonna get sweaty then you don't need as much. figure out what works for you

not a threadworthy question, but whatever. just get some baselayers or thermals from sporting goods stores. I personally start off with a base layer of something breathable and warm, maybe a flannel or something, then wear a light liner jacket or whatever to throw my actual jacket over. keeps me nice and toasty, and you can always shed layers to throw in the car.

but yeah, layering isn't too hard to figure out, its in the name practically. just make layers of warm, breathable clothes and you will figure it out. just toss them in your bag/car and carry on with the day.

A few thoughts:

Skip the cotton, unless it's above freezing. That's the only time you'll see me ride in a sweatshirt.

If it's not falling out of the sky, soft shells. So much more comfortable, breathable, and nice to move and ski in. Climate and what kind of skiing you do affect this, but really, they're super applicable if you live in the Rockies. Soft shells give a little more insulation than hard-shells. And if you're touring in hardshell pants, it had better be puking.

Generally speaking, I like synthetic insulation better for skiiing. Still warm when you sweat or it's wet. Breathes better. Doesn't overheat as fast. But if it's truly cold, down is the way to go.

I try not to have more than three layers on my top. Usually that's a long sleeve tech base of merino/synthetic, heavier waffle fleece on the colder days. Then maybe a synthetic vest or thin synthetic jacket if it's colder, then hard or soft shell.

Venting zips are nice to regulate heat.

People tend to buy cheap, heavy gear that's designed with the chairlift in mind. This stuff doesn't function as well as actual mountain clothing, so that's the price tradeoff.

I skied a day or two scrappy Joe style when it was around -30F. It's honestly not too bad. Just adjust to the temp a bit. We know the struggle of low Temps and ice.

On the bottom:
Silkweight Underwear
Powerstrech
Shell - Softshell if possible, I really like softshell bottoms for skiing. If there's any substantial precip then I'll throw a hardshell on.

On the top:
Silkweight
Powerstretch or Grid Fleece
Synthetic Insulator Hoodie - I will often ski in this and keep the shell off if there's no substantial precip. I wear it as most people would wear a softshell hoodie, I've never found a softshell top that's worked for me.
Shell - See above.
Duvet Jacket - I'll only throw this on if it's really cold, dependent on the conditions this will either be a down puffy or a synthetic belay jacket.
