Troy. But, this just keeps affirming to me that BASE-jumping is just fucking stupid, but hey, most things we do are stupid.
Troy.I accidentally posted the same damn thing... but fuuuck. Fucking legend in the climbing and BASE world. But, this just keeps affirming to me that BASE-jumping is just fucking stupid, but hey, most things we do are stupid.
hanksyI know all you said is that BASE jumping is fucking stupid, and it is fucking stupid. But in times like these, sometimes commentary can get sensational and I think it's important to recognize that this not your average BASE jump.
You could figure out the exact numbers from the BFL (http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/wiki/BASE_Fatality_List), but I think ~20 out of the last ~25 fatalities have been part of wingsuit BASE with most of them being deliberate proximity flights. Another one of those was a 73 year old guy who jumped with his parachute on fire, on purpose. The point is that most of the time, these are people supremely pushing the boundaries of the sport, and not just your average/beginner jumpers. You could make a similar comparison to skiing. I know BASE is absolutely more dangerous than skiing, but I'd hate to throw out an entire sport because of tragedies that happen to absolute heroes like Dean (and Shane) who died while significantly changing what people thought was possible.
RIP Dean, such an absolute bummer..
MitchPeeWhat's the point of this? Here's a thread commending the life of two very passionate people that pioneered things so far out of the scope of most people's reality and all you have to say is what they were doing was "fucking stupid"?
How would you feel if someone said what JP Auclair and Andreas were doing was "fucking stupid"?
Humble doesn't even do justice for how much of a person Graham was. Picture a guy out there in the ski world who has been doing it for just a few years. Under a decade. He's out there doing the same thing all the pros are doing. The only difference is he doesn't have a twitter, an instagram, or a facebook to let everyone know how rad he was getting. In the past couple months his accomplishments are only merely rolled off the tongue of people and shown in video to a select few. Fly free brother, I only wish more people could be more like you.
Troy.I think you guys misunderstood my post, and I definitely could have worded it better.
Troy. That said, BASE jumping is a sore spot for me right now. Earlier last week, a really good friend of mine had a super close call with a tangled chute, so there might be a touch of bitterness in my system right now. But hey, life goes on.
theBearJewA post from Jeb Corliss.
This person had extremely harsh words to say about Dean Potters death and I felt compelled to respond. This kind of thinking is very small... Here is what he had to say and then my response.
Terence Gray - "Yes it's sad that someone has died but extreme sportsmen and women are selfish self absorbed idiots who don't care about what they put their loved ones through or the people who have to risk their lives to rescue them when they get themselves into difficulty."
Jeb Corliss - "That may be the single most ignorant comment I have ever seen in my entire life. Risk takers are what drive evolution. They are the people that got in little wooden boats and crossed oceans to find new lands. They are the ones that got in metal rockets and shot them selves in to space to visit the moon. They are the ones that risk them selves to push the human species forward. You chose to have children and you have people that rely on you for survival. For you it would be extremely selfish at this point to risk your life because you made a choice to bring other life onto this planet that you are responsible for. But people like Dean made other choices. He did not have children. He made sacrifices so he could help the human species evolve into something new. You obviously do not understand what he was doing and that is ok, you don't have to. But to express such harsh views shows how small you think and says way more about you than it does him. I get it, you think jumping from cliffs is pointless and crazy but how crazy were the first squirrels that tried to fly? How crazy must they have been to jump from one tree trying to make it to the next? How many of them must have died trying? Over time they evolved and now they can fly. Dean Potter and people like him are those early squirrels evolving, growing, pushing the human race forward into new territory. You have kids and you are willing to die for them I am sure. Dean had him self and he was willing to die to push the human race forward. By the way these rescue workers you are taking about have jobs they chose because it's work they want to do. Some of my best friends are rescue workers and they love their work. They do it because they enjoy helping people. Being selfish is not being true to ones self living ones dreams. Being selfish is expecting others to live the way you want them too."
