i'm gearing up for winter season (exciting trip to Perisher!!) and want to buy some new clothing. i want to buy good quality stuff that will last me a few seasons at least to i'm happy to make a big investment. was gonna go for a goretex brand with the highest rating then it's just a matter of style. but then a friend mentioned a german brand called sympatex and they advertise themselves as being the best. i could only find one brand in australia selling sympatex called pure brandz. does anyone have any experience with goretex vs sympatex?
I've only had experience with goretex (Patagonia triolet jacket) and it has kept me dry as a bone through both heavy snow and rain. Also you probably have already thought about this but go for layers instead of a insulated jacket, it makes dressing for temperatures much easier and it will make your layers more multipurpose.
just get goretex. it keeps me dry in deep pow, regular snow, mashed potatoes and rain. it also is on plenty of jackets so you have a pretty large selection. never heard of sympatex before seeing this thread but I read up on them and they look like they are good company. so if I were you I would just get goretex but if you think you want to try something different and possibly better go for it.
Many good alternatives out there, not only Goretex. hype, eVent, polartec neoshell etc to name a few. However, goretex is tried and tested and known to function well for a long time if treated correctly. I've had my Norrøna shells for about 4 seasons now and they are still working as good as the day I bought them (an expensive day). If I was to buy again I'd probably go for goretex active shell which is more breathable than pro-shell.
thanks for the replies...lots of support for goretex as i expected and was my plan to buy. i think for my needs and level i can go with any option and just choose my style. was hoping to hear if anyone tried sympatex and if it made a difference that their fabric is green
