Ski Bumming Questions

So I finally decided to take a year off before college and give ski bumming a try out in Salt Lake. Pretty much everyone tells me it is a dumb idea, but I can't not do it, I love to ski way to much. I wanted to get some advice from Utah NSers or anyone about the best way of going about doing this.

My general plan is to get an apartment in Sandy (or around it). I want to ski Snowbird most days, but I want to throw in some days at PC to progress myself in the park. My first question is transportation. Should I pool my money and buy a cheap 3,000 dollar old subaru (or another reputable 4wd), or would a bus be able to take me from an apartment in Sandy to both Snowbird and PC.

Another inquiry has to do with jobs. Ill be working this summer but I was wondering what the best job for a ski bum would be. I was thinking a waiter at night somewhere in Sandy or SLC (or LCC?), but was wondering if anyone had any advice on good gigs for the kind of lifestyle I want to live. (Also sorry if I am misconstruing the term ski bum, I don't know what else to use).

Lastly, dates. What is the best way for me to find a roommate or an apartment in Sandy. When should I start checking on those?

Sorry for the big wall of text, I'm just a little nervous about the whole thing, but too excited to consider not doing it.

The bus from sandy to pc will SUCK. Just live in pc carless and ski pc/cany on one pass I did it for two seasons. Lots of jobs in pc will expense an epic pass. Or you buy a car and live in sandy to ski the bird. 703 477 6397 hmu if you got more questions bout PC

the world renown 711 at the bottom of big and little cottonwood is a definite must anytime you come down from snowbird

I would suggest basing out of PC, and avoiding the salt lake valley. I lived in Park City for about 5 years and it was awesome.. probably going to move back sooner than later.. If you have your heart set on sandy/snowbird, then the logistics of getting to the mountain frequently will be more difficult especially without a car.If you are going to dedicate a year to skiing, why not live right on a resort? just fuel for thought..

As for a job, i cant really speak for the valley but the entire town of Park City goes on a hiring frenzy late October early November and usually has plenty of jobs open through the season. I would assume you could also land an on-mountain job at Snowbird or Alta or Brighton or Solitude pretty easily that time of year as well. otherwise, hotel and restaurant jobs are pretty common skier occupations. Anything that allows you to ski during the day and work evenings or nights.

well if you don't want to buy a car and want to primarily shred LCC then consider living and working up at alta, they offer employee housing and a lot of jobs that allow you to shred errryday. Also you could ride the bird if your working at alta. otherwise buy a car and live in the valley, cept sandy probably isn't the spot if you want any kind of social life with other shredders, sugarhouse would probably be more up your ally

a ski bum is usually a more rugged guy who docsent have a job, they just kinda live out of their van/ trailer and travels around. Not sure what i would call what your doing, but it sounds like a lot of fun hope it works out
