Stop spinning (fliping) mid air

So yesterday, I wanted to try rodeo 5 for the first time (which was a completely idiot idea). I watched all the tutorial on youtube that all said: dive your right shoulder and open your left shoulder and look up to the sky then spot your landing. Just by saying that, I keep thinking it is really easy to do. So I tried it on a perfect jump not to big not to small with a lot of speed, I pop pretty hard and dive and open my shoulders blablabla but I kind of NOT rodeo, my body just stop spinning and fliping when I was kinda upside down and landed , or exploded myself (luckily) on my back(I overshoot the jump). It was a powder day so I didnt get hurt. Can someone can clearly explain me how this can NOT happen again?

get 5's down, then get backflips down. Learn how the rotations should feel, get really comfortable. I think of rodeo's as "backflip plus rotation", and just focusing on the flip feeling is the only way i can do them.

Seriously tho try a trick that looks cool and is easy, like pencil 3s. Talk about progression

By the...I didnt try rodeo 5 like for my first trick ever... I have 1,3,5,7,cork 3 and 5 and underflip.with a bunch of grabs down. So I just thought I at a point in my progression where I could try a rodeo/flat 5.

You cant just look up in the sky and think that it will come around.. When you are in the middle of the rodeo, look for the landing. It will surprise you how early you can spot it. Good luck op

You need to be more confident and have it down on lock on a tramp first. It sounds like you just shit yourself with an unfamiliar rotation, and rodeo 5 is a really alien rotation compared to everything else.

Personally, I think a rodeo 5 is a way different set then a "backflip plus rotation", yeah maybe that might help abit; what helped me the most was getting it dialled on a trampoline or off a diving board. Then all you gotta do is make sure you set properly and it will come around super easy.

with all those tricks you can do it pro ably Wasn't a commitment issue, but you should pribably learn a backflip first and make sure you have them down on a tramp

yeah, but thats the mentality i have to use to focus on setting it. even if it ends up being more of an off axis rotation than a flip, recognizing the flip "feeling", even if its more of a spin than a flip, is essential.

To me if your diving your right shoulder, AND thinking of it as a backflip, you mentally fucked yourself with which way you should rotate... you don't dive anything forward in a backflip, your getting mixed messages, rodeo doesn't = backflip

I wouldn't say you need to tramp it, I've never learned a trick on tramp before snow. But It may help if he has access. I agree though rodeo feels super weird compared to just about anything else. Once you get it down though and you can float it off big booters, feels super sexy.

False, you drive your hips forward to set a backflip. Common misconception that its just throwing back. But you are correct that rodeo isnt a backflip. A really good looking rodeo often doesnt even go inverted, you rotate your body on a horizontal axis.


OP - As for answering the question at hand the thing that really helped me was reaching for Japan strait off the jump. Got me into my tuck, also got me to set the trick harder and in the correct fashion. Might help you too

aight imma try to explain this better, because I had the same problem as OP for a long long time.

To me any backwards off axis rotation involves some level of a backflip feeling. How much of a backflip it feels like changes with the trick, with and underflip it feels almost identical, in a flat spin its less, in a rodeo its even more subtle because most of the rotation your going to "feel" is horizontal. But either way, the essential part of being off axis is being able to feel comfortable with that flipping sensation. Once you get that its easier to add totally different elements to set it up; "punching the midget", diving a shoulder, kicking a knee across your body.

In all of the rotations, at some point, you are going to feel some "flip". Knowing how to continue that flip was the hardest thing for me to get down, and the only way i learned was focusing on it rather than all of the diagonal cross body rotation everyone else told me to try. That was the part of the trick i wasnt continuing and committing to. I don't know how well this will work for everyone else, but its what did it for me.

Tramps help exponentially, you are either a progression monster or have a body of steel. I've tried a bunch of tricks on an airbag and got them around first try but I just don't have the balls to take them to snow.

its way more simple than everyone is saying, its because you spotted the sky and when your eyes got stuck there, your rotation stopped, you know how to huck a 180 you spot at one 180, well when you huck a 360 you huck the same but keep your eyes and head looking around for the 360 its the same logic
