Can anyone argue against the fact that Candide is the greatest skier of all time?

I just think Candide is too shy/reserved to join up with a TGR like crew that will take him to AK and show him the ropes. He hasn't pursued that kind of terrain for whatever reason...probly is having enough fun already haha

It's good to see some of this getting set straight. A lot of members are learning as they post, so I'm not one to criticize and I encourage the posts regardless of accuracy, because the truth surfaces in public forums like these. It's the beauty of our community.

As for who is the best freeskier? I think it's all subjective and it's exactly what this sport is all about: personal interpretation. We're all stimulated by different things athletes can do whether it's a technical approach or the slight bit of style one introduces. This is a sport that was founded on breaking out of the box, skiing past the boundaries and not caring what other people think about it. But, it's evolved into a business and some say we pollute it with structure and measurements in the form of competitions. And, then we have posts like these. Some like it, some love it and some will criticize it and those who discuss it. I say f*uck it and who cares, because it all pushes the sport and the athlete forward.

Keep posting...the good, the bad and the ugly.

popadonnaits funny you are talking out of your ass cali... i have been with candide while filming kameras 1&2, and Few Words, and have personally witnessed him killing it everywhere. in Few Words, it was at the tail end of the season in BC, the snow was shit, and he still sent three huge backflips off the spines, down a huge face in a single run. not to mention being with him in verbier, and how he crushed the bec with conditions way more dangerous than AK, ie... sketchy tracked out snow

Candide is. Without question.

I just dont agree that Candide is at the very top of the game for big mountain when such a huge part of pro level big mtn(imo) is missing from his resume. he may have won the FWT but I believe the difference between winning the FWT and just competing full time on the FWT is pretty minimal in terms of amazing talent. But he is missing an entire facet, and imo the most impressive facet of big mountain.

Not to say he doesnt kill it at big mountain far harder than anyone else being considered for "best overall skier alive".

Not many people could ride the chair with Candide and get to the bottom as quickly or stylishly as he can.
Scary thing is, judging by his latest video, he's still getting better and going harder each year. Honestly I'm not sure he's human.

I am an old fuck and I'm going to have to disagree, Shane is definitely in the discussion, but I don't think he dominated park/backcountry tricks like a number of the skiers named. I would say most of the skiers named were closer to Shane's skill level in the mountains than Shane was to their park level, however he was also much older when the freestyle scene blew up. Also not sure how to gauge the value of developing the ski that was almost as instrumental as putting a tip on the end. No disrespect to Shane, he was truly a character that significantly shaped this sport

Also have to disagree with the Coombs statement

A different kind of GOAT. Candecent is the GOAT in terms of overall talent and slayage, whereas McDonkey was the GOAT in terms of progressing (revolutionizing) the sport itself. Hell he even inadvertently progressed ski racing to another level with his skiing.

Coombs was insane but then again, a GOAT wouldn't have slipped and fallen off a mountain. Maybe he's a fainting GOAT but that's about it.

Shane was rad as EFF. But he was a half generation too old to get quite as steezy as "candice." Shane ended up the best of his era, surpassing combs and schmidt, and besting the likes of holmes, seth, and mosely. But the younglings took it a step further while shane ventured into parachuting. Yeah, Candide didn't win the bud pro tour, but his medals were received in humility unmatched in this sport.

Also, I find it odd, but "candice" doesn't use a 5 dimension ski. just rocker. What Candide did do on his first pro-model was fucking awesome though... some will recall a bit of grip tape fashioned as a day-old shaven top of a beaver just in front of the toe piece, to assist with tweaking a good old mute grab.

I think you could probably break down the GOAT of each particular skiing discipline, but overall, I think you can make a pretty solid argument that Candide is the overall GOAT in skiing.

What are your thoughts in more specific disciplines?

I will repeat, Candide has never skied, on film, any of those martian looking 2000' 60degree spine walls with massive bergschrunds that ONLY Alaska provides. Its generally just the TGR boys and a select few others that can, and do it at mach chicken.

He doesn't have to be the best at every facet of skiing to be the best overall skier.

He has never skied what I described. Anyone car to prove me wrong?

Candide Thovex is an absolute legend. Every time people start to think his done, he proves them wrong. Few Words is, without a doubt, one of the greatest ski films of all time. No other skier has been so dominant, in so many fields of freeskiing as long as Candide. Tanner comes close, but doesn't quite touch the legendary status that Candide has held for an unimaginable amount of time. Candide has shown his prowess in park, pipe, moguls, and backcountry. Those who doubt his ability to rip gnarly pow lines have clearly never seen Few Words.

Few words was, IMO, not overly great as a documentary or as pure ski porn. In fact Few words was probably towards the bottom of impressive video that candide has put out in the lat 5-6 years. just didnt do it for me. CK 1 was a game changer for me that gets viewed multiple times each year, few words was a regrettable iTunes purchase that was viewed 1.5 times.

This sport has lost some incredible talents and amazing people over the years. We should always respect them as they deserve it for at minimum everything they've done to progress this sport and the immense amount of respect they've paid to it.

Most of the athlete names dropped in this thread would be embarrassed knowing they were mentioned in it due to the disrespect paid to their peers and their fans.

The person that we know as Candide Thovex is actually an imaginary person that we have all pieced together through the years. Think about it, someone couldn't win that many competitions, create such great film segments, and be that fucking awesome. Its not possible

That one guys brother said it the best, "have you ever thought about how much it would suck being the lame mortal brother of a demi-god?"

He is a demi-god in which this means he was once a real person but after death he obtained these great skills and abilities through the help of each and everyone of us.

He is not a real person more than less a figure of all of our imaginations.

So technically we made Candide Thovex who he is.

I get where you are coming from. Watching the trailer, it looked like it was going to be a "That's It, That's All" or "Art of Flight" for skiing. Expecting that instead of more of a documentary left me a little disappointed. It was beautifully shot, but not as much skiing as I was hoping for. It also would have been cool to see more interviews with the man himself instead of just family and friends.

Still really cool to see where Candide came from and a bit of insight into his skiing.

i feel you on thinking it would be more of a normal movie rather than a documentary, but i still loved it and the new footage was so good (destroying lines, trip backy, dub 12, etc etc)

i would like to see him tackle a that's it that's all type of movie-- shit, he's one of the few people on rice's level in the BC lines and jump game

and yeah, as for him not talking much in the movie, that's why it's called few words. he aint into talking about himself, so no surprise he didnt take the mic in the movie at all

Simon Dumont - Longevity, amplitude, style, competitiveness (pipe essential), influence, toughness
Tanner Hall - Took the sport from a stuntman, adrenaline trial and error spectacle to an absolute art form. So ahead of his peers in his air awareness and smooth, effortless style. Part of me wants to argue Tom Wallisch, and also part of me wants to argue Henrik because he's the current best park skier, but Tanner's place in history is undeniable.
Hugo Harrison/Seth Morrison TIE - Too obvious to explain. There may be people currently skiing bigger and better lines, but again, they both redefined what was possible on skis in their eras unlike any other skiers. There are many honorable mentions and people who you could make a case for, but for me it's an easy decision.
Eric Pollard - Artist. No skier better represents his personality and skiing in a video part.

Candide Thovex/Shane TIE - Candide IS the most well-rounded skier to ever live. Shane is the most charismatic, most "skier's skier" to ever live. The only litmus test is, "Which skier do I most want to drink a beer with?". He wins by a landslide.
Glenn Plake - GOAT OG. His skiing in Blizzard was basically the invention of modern charging and he's an icon.

I will repeat, Candide has never skied, on film, any of those martian looking 2000' 60degree spine walls with massive bergschrunds that ONLY Alaska provides. Its generally just the TGR boys and a select few others that can, and do it at mach chicken.

He doesn't have to be the best at every facet of skiing to be the best overall skier.

He has never skied what I described. Anyone car to prove me wrong?


I just want to say that after rewatching Few Words last evening you sir are dead wrong. The first 10 minutes has plenty of big shit that he rips so hard.
