What defines a "Mountain Town?"

In your opinion, what separates a mountain town, from a city in the mountains?

Mountain town or resort town?

Example, park city is a mountain town but I'd also a resort town.

Leadville is a mountain town, etc.

Mountain towns have a rustic feel to them. There aren't really any major corporations (outside of the mountain) that are headquarters there. You've got a main street with shops and bars with a relaxed atmosphere. I think a great example of a mountain town is Telluride because it is so far away from everywhere else. Mountain cities is just like a typical busy city, except you can see mountains everywhere.

A mountain town is a town where the whole economy is based on tons of people visiting there to ski.

In my opinion you have to look at it as two parts. Mountain and Town. The former is simple. Is it in close proximity to mountains? Done.

Then you get into town vs. city. This turned into an extremely heated drunken debate between myself and my buddy a couple years ago. He insisted there had to be a numerical value that was the line between a town and a city. I claimed it was subjective and had to be case by case.

Denver, Park City, Reno = Mountain Cities

Truckee, Frisco, etc = Mountain Town

I can't tell you the difference between the two in my head.

A mountain town is a town on or right alongside a mountain like Verbier and Zermatt. A city in the mountains is a city near mountains like Salt Lake City and Boise.
