I'm going on a road trip to Oregon and I am looking to ski Mt. Hood for a day. I will be there around the 26th, will the public park be any good if it is even open? Thanks.
Not sure about the park, but if you're up for a bit of an adventure, it's very worth it to hike past the top of the Palmer lift. If you get too high you have to be careful of crevasses and snow bridges (snow covering crevasses that you can't see), but it's very cool up there. I was there two years ago and walked right alongside crevasses, there was an opening in the glacier with a stream running under the glacier, there were sulphur vents. Such an awesome place.

Dont do that in late August. Just dont. Very dangerous. I think thats pre labor day weekend, so public park should be up there and lappable ideally. It would be fun, cant hurt.

Labor day is sept 1. I was thinking about a trip up the 31st and 1st. The public park is open until labor day, right?
Sorryim on my phone but it used to bebthay labor day weekend was the only weekend they were closed... Totally closed I mean, no public park or nothing. It might be after labor day weekend now
Snow bridges yes, instable snowpack with massive melting occuring underneath leading to collapsing snow, and constant small wet slides which will throw you somewhere you might never come out of. Its silly and reckless to do anything like that past early July.

Thats a good idea if you have crevasse rescue experience and gear. But I would assume you dont have a clue

rockfall. 2-3 times a week i look up at mt hood and see a huge dust cloud from debris sliding/falling down.
mt hood is basically a reverse sand pit...the only thing that holds it together is ice and snow. so yeah especially on a shitty snow year like this one i wouldn't venture too much past palmer
I was there in July 2012 (mid-late July I believe), I asked one of the guys working there if it's safe to hike up alone without experience and was told yes. When I got to the crevasses, I didn't go much further and followed footsteps of mountaineers so I knew the path was safe. The other posters ITT obviously know more about it than me so listen to them.
I suggested a course of action to OP, I did not advise him on how to go about that course of action (aside from telling him to be careful of crevasses and snow bridges which, yes, is advice, and it is good advice). Problem?
