Malaysian passenger plane crashes in Ukraine near Russian border -Ifax

MOSCOW, July 17 (Reuters) - A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, Interfax cited an aviation industry source as saying on Thursday.

It said the Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Reuters could not immediately confirm the Interfax report.

Ya i'm watching the news right now, pretty insane stuff. Russia definitely fucked up real bad if they really did shoot it down. Which seems like the only explanation.

this is fucking grim, actually. saw reports that there were bodies and body parts on peoples houses as well as plane wreckage/more bodies scattered all over the place.

was crossing from ukrainian airspace to pro-russian separatist airspace. unlikely it would fly all the way across ukraine to be shot when crossing into russia. also a russian built BUK ground-air missile was supposedly used. pro-russian groups have taken control of the crash site. things dont look too good right now..

This is really worrisome. Russia may not have directly done it, but if it was done by a Ukrainian Separatist group they supplied, there will be severe ramifications.

Here's my summary of what we know so far.

Flight MH17, carrying 295 people from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, has come down in eastern Ukraine. The plane lost contact with ATC shortly after entering crossing the Ukraine border.

That's it, it's not much.


What has been reported so far:

- Everyone is dead. Not surprising.
- Ukrainians say they have recordings of a missile being fired shortly before the plane lost contact. We'll wait and see on this.
- Rebels say they saw a Ukrainian fighter following the plane - not only does this not really make any political sense, it's also impossible to see a tiny fighter jet at 33,000ft.
- Similar events have occurred in similar conflicts, a US jet was shot down during the Gulf War.
- Poroshenko (Ukrainian president) tweets the crash was "an act of terrorism"
- It is unlikely, although not impossible, that the rebels possessed surface to air missiles capable of shooting down a plane at 33,000 ft.
- As BBC news correctly (and genuinely) reports: "The plane will not be completing it's flight". Thanks BBC.


There's stuff I'm missing I'm sure, but that's the major parts.

At the moment what is being reported is conflicting and is often second or third hand. Currently pointing fingers is a stupid idea.

That said, I cannot see any political reason why the Ukrainian government would deliberately take down a foreign passenger plane.

Frame the separatist groups. Get the world involved. It is very risky, but it could be done.


Regardless, there is a lot of information missing, but a lot of pictures going around. Bodies apparently are being located miles away from the crash site. I am no expert, but I would think this is most likely indicating that it exploded in mid-air and that the plane did not crash.

I think its also important to note that a Ukrainian military cargo plane was shot down a few days ago and a Ukrainian ground attack jet was shot down yesterday, reports on those say the missiles might have been fired from inside Russia.

there's so many conflicting reports right now, some sources say pro-russia rebels did it and have accepted responsibility, others say they haven't, some don't even say if it was definitely shot down. things won't be clear for a while, so i say

also if anyone is thinking it's not russia its the ukranian rebels they are sorely misguided. Rebels = russian military .

Rebels don;t have the firepower to knock a plane out of the sky that is at 40k feet...that is some serious firepower you don't just pick up off the side of the street

it was an international flight with more fuel. the explosion would be huge regardless if it blew up in the air or on the ground. I think it is most likely that it crashed before exploding.

It combusts very rapidly and it's what you can thank for pretty much every movie 'explosion'. I've just seen a video (then lost it) that shows such a fireball forming. Fire is likely to be extinguished almost immediately by the dust falling.

if it was the Russians, I doubt it was intentional. and it doesn't mean much, unfortunate as that is.

Commercial airline shootdowns happen. The US shot down an Iranian Airlines A300 years ago, and most likely also destroyed a TWA flight off long island in 1996. And the Soviet Union had more than one instance of shooting down airliners. Hell they shot down multiple Korean Airlines planes by accident. And that's just one airline.


when you're targeting a plane flying at altitude, it's very difficult to tell what exactly it is.

I mean, if a water main broke the rebels would probably claim they did it just to seem more threatening. They claimed they shot down the wrong kind of plane so they either mistook it for a transport, are lying about thinking it was a transport so it doesn't seem like they purposely killed civilians, or are just shooting at stuff in the sky. or it just crashed.

Regardless of who shot it down, it'll be blamed on the rebel groups. Could you imagine one of the Governments admitting they accidentally shot it down, it'd be a political disaster.

and rebel groups aren't exactly famous for their amazing ability to determine what they actually did.

I mean... even bin laden was shocked when he found out how effective their attack on 9/11 was. And that was meticulously planned for years. Can't imagine a group of rebels with this much firepower knew what they were doing at all

I feel like it was the Russian separatists, and probably an accident. The BUK they are using don't have radars that tell the difference from military and civilian aircraft. To them, they all appear the same, so they probably thought it was a Ukrainian airplane. It's unfortunate that accidents can happen like that. I think this may be the beginning of a Third World War in the months to come

This is at best speculation. The idea that a BUK M2 is based on the assumption that it was shot down by a surface to air missile (a distinct possibility), and experts say that the BUK M2 is the equipment most likely to be capable of shooting down a plane at FL330. I'm listening to the BBC right now who say it could be an 'SA11' system, that apparently the separatists could have.

There is yet to be any hard evidence that a missile shot down the plane, only speculation. Don't get me wrong though, the idea that the plane was shot down (accidentally or deliberately) is still firmly on the table.

Hey great investigative research sherlock...we're all fully aware of how fucking awesome the U.S. military power is. Doesn't mean shit when you still have to the potential to go to war costing billions and billions of dollars and potentially losing tens of millions of lives
