Stanford, hands down. Everyone in technology seems to have a phd in computer science from Stanford. So besides the fact that they're more selective than Harvard Yale or Princeton, I would attend Stanford. How bout you?

Lol. Not so much on th asian part. The party scene is not the best(understatement), but the extracurricular activies that are available(outside of partying) are pretty unbelievable. And there is a party scene, its just smaller and not on campus. Downtown Palo Alto is actually pretty crackin, but its about 1/3 students 2/3 recent grad young professionals.

Stanford is hands down the best overall University in the world- academics, research, alumni, athletics, endowment, property etc. I would say Stanford Med School, cardiothorasic surgurey. Yep. i ll go with that.

i would love to go to uni but i slacked of in yr 11 & 12 and underachieved heappsss. now im not motivated enough and too caught up in the travel bug to do some alternative pathway to get in.

Id give stanford top 5 in the world. But princeton gets #1 more often in us news and world

I would want a masters degree in mech engineering with some sort of specialization in automotive/motorsport applications. idk what school, MIT is a good one for engineering but seems super fucking lame in every other way.

I would just want something that can get me in with a F1 race team or something. not gonna bother researching any details on that haha

I would do econ at U of Chicago. Not a fun time while you're there but that potentially the best undergrad degree in the country if you want a business career. Then an MBA at one of the elite business schools.

Here in the UK that is pretty much how it works. You apply for one subject at up to five universities, and you study that subject for the next 3 (BA or BSc) or 4 (MA or MSci).

I'm at the University of Sheffield studying chemistry, I'm on a four year course including the MSci. Sometimes I regret it because the workload is pretty terrifying but normally I really like the subject and department, I'd recommend Sheffield to anyone in England as well.

Thats why i said overall. I place a huge emphasis on the athletic program of a school. Plus, its pretty damn hard to beat the weather. Different strokes for different folks i guess.

And lets be real, we are comparing a rolls royce to a maybach here. Both are silly good schools haha.

Really? thats surprising to hear. Stanford usually gives out massive amounts of financial aid. Are you doing any athletics curiously?

And you made the right choice if you like a more traditional feel. Stanford is pretty damn cool, but you certainly wont get a traditional college experience. though you also have pretty shitty sports at Harvard(basketball being the 1 exception...and you have Palo Alto to thank for that haha).

Congrats btw, thats awesome you got into both! I hope you had a chance to visit both before making a choice.

Honestly, those school rankings in terms of selectivity are a bunch of publicity BS. Schools will try to deflate their acceptance rates by making applying easier in a variety of different ways.

It makes a large difference for public schools. Football and Basketball boosters are what fund damn near everything outside of the bare basics. Thats how research gets paid for- whcih in turn attracts undergrad. Thats how facilities get upgraded- which attracts better students...etc.

Of course a top level academic school doesnt need sports, but U of Michigan, or U of Washington would not be near the level they are at academically without the massive amount of donations from boosters trickeling down into every facet of the school.

Not to mention everyone wantst o be associated with a winner, so competetion is greater, and better and better students are addmitted.

This actually isn't always true. I go to UConn and our athletic department is actually funded totally separately from the rest of the school. When people donate to the athletics it doesn't trickle down. I agree that good athletics can attract better undergrads and raise the selectivity of the school, but the trickle down logic isn't always the case.

I am looking at the macroscale economics of it all. You are looking at the direct, obvious connections. A top level athletic program is an extremely attractive attribute when students look at colleges, and the more attractive a school is, the more applications they recieve, and the more selective they can become. Boosters continue to fund the AD because they like the noteriety and perks, which in turn helps the AD recruit bettter athletes, which makes the athletics better which makes it a more attractive school to students...etc, etc.

A few examples of this are The U, U of O, Ohio State, Penn State, TExas etc, etc.

But you are right the AD as a whole is a money loser. I should have just kept it at football program, or a perennial top 5 Basektball program (KU, UK, Duke, UNC etc).


Another factor is the alumni connection. Outside of the top tier academic institutions, if your college didnt have a good football or basketball program, you probably wont feel a sense loyalty or pride about it 10+ years after graduation. and if you dont have pride in it, you probably wont donate. Especially if no one is going to see your name on the library haha. Now, if 80,000 people walk by the library every other week during the fall, then there is a ton more prestige to having your name up there, you know? Especially for UM or UDub, the above is true.

Generally, a good football program makes the whole college much better.

I know of a couple schools whose football program entirely pays for the rest of the AD budget and then donates money back into the rest of the school. Meaning that all that state funding and tuition that normally pays for the AD, goes back into the academic side.

A smart guy once said "saving money is making money".

Art center college of designs transportation design program. 6 years of school, about 2 of 20 kids from each class graduates, everyone immediately gets a 250k job as soon as they walk out the door. If I knew I could graduate, I would do it.

Honestly drawing that stuff for 12 hours a week and making that kind of money would not be a bad life... School would just be hell.

Yeah stnfrd and harvard are comparable overall if you exclude sports which put stnfrd ahead. But Harvard actually has a nightlife, which will make it more fun.
Also judging a school by its endowment per capita is not an unreasonable way to rate it. Harvards might be higher than stanford which is why they give better fin aid but i dont know for sure. Ill look it up

if I was on a different trajectory, then an MBA from LBS, harvard, or wharton.. because once you have one of those you'll stack paper for a decade and have enough to do whatever the fuck you want for the rest of your life.

As it stands, I'm applying for the strategic design and management program at Parsons in the next two years or so, need to beef up my portfolio before applying to any design programs.
