Why do you think pets wander off and hide when they die?

Do you think its an instinctual thing? Like not wanting to be attacked by scavengers until you are actually dead? It just seems like such a sad thing. To wander off so you can die alone.

idk, i had that same instinct when I was tripping hard on DXM. Seems like almost every trip I had, I was living my last moments at one point or another. When I was at home tripping alone, I was crawling around the yard looking for a good place to die. When I was with friends, I told them to get rid of me at the river so it wouldn't be an inconvenience when I go.
So I'm guessing instinct
but what do I know, I'm just a common house cat

Possible theory- whatever is going on internally before they die is painful and they run away in an attempt to relieve the pain, idk.
