Murder of James M. Boyd

James M. Boyd is the man who was killed. Boyd was arguing with police for hours last Sunday in the foothills after officers were going to talk to him about illegally camping.

At Friday?s press conference, Chief Gordon Eden said Boyd pulled two knives on the officers when they first went to talk to him.

Chief Eden said Officers Keith Sandy and Dominque Perez each fired their rifles three times.
It?s unclear how many bullets hit Boyd.

Chief Eden called the shooting justified today saying officers also used non-lethal force, first throwing a flash bang then releasing a dog while simultaneously using a taser gun and bean bag rounds.

Pigful murderers. They thought they were so hardcore, screaming commands while a homeless man lays lifelessly on the ground.

So many things wrong... Why did they handcuff him after he was dead? And do they really expect someone to be able to react to orders after he gets flashbanged and tazed at the same time? It was probably just a hunting knife or he like.

he dint respond to the officers original orders, and then tried to keep fighting after non-lethal force was used. the guy tried to stab and kill officers.


Cops have to deal with the mentally ill who are a danger to them. Life isnt fair. Hey, if it means that the officer gets to come home to his family because he fired on someone beligerently wielding a deadly wepon, then im all for it.


I dare anyone to show me a video of police brutality where the victim was fully and completely compliant with police orders...

Clearly they collected a lot of money in this case. He wasn't camping or hiking. He was homeless.

And yea, you're right. Anyone who wants to work in civil service should obviously do it for free. No uniform, no department.

You didn't mention how this guy refused to cooperate with them for a full 3 hours.

But unfortunately I don't have the time to really argue with middle school kids on the internet, so good luck with your anti cop crusade.

Did the homeless man fully and immediatley comply with the officers? probly not.

Officers would get tried with murder, assault etc if there was no reason for them to fuck up a suspect and the whole thing was caught on camera. try and use some common sense. damn.

This lasted for over three hours. During which time the police reviewed his full record, found out he was mentally ill, and also found out he had a history of violence against the police in the past--due to his mental illness, and forced evictions.

The police don't have a time limit when dealing with human life. The man was essentially cornered, helicopters were no doubt tracking his every move, and he wasn't an immediate threat to everyone else. He didn't pull his knives out until after he had been flash-banged, tazed. He only reacted after they sent the dogs on him-after the flash bangs and tazing. I dunno if you've ever been hit by a stun grenade, but clearly the man thought he was being attacked. In this case, he was.

Who cares if this standoff took three hours, it's the Police's job to protect and serve. The man was harming no one at the time of his killing, and until the man had been attacked, he wasn't acting violent.

If somebody was standing out a window of a tall building, and the police spent 24 hours talking them down, they would be considered heroes. In this case the police spent three hours negotiating and then they just pushed him.

No one deserves to die, especially if they aren't harming anyone.

youre analogy about the suicidal jumper doesnt work btw. in a jumper situation the jumper is an obvious danger to himself and no one else. In this case, the homeless guy wasnt a danger to himself- he was a danger to the cops. the cops have a job to do and that job was to evict this guy. 2 totally different instances. The cops knew he had a history of violence towars police so they tried to enforce the law peacfully...for 3 hours. They then used non lethal force to force the suspect to give himself up at which point the suspect tried to use a deadly weapon against the cops. the cops reacted appropriatly to the direct threat.

Im almost positive he did. He was screaming for his father while 3 police officers piled on him and, i believe, suffocated him to death. You can hear him tell them multiple times telling them he couldnt breathe but they did not let up and he ended up dying. Absolute abuse of power and im usually on the side of the police, especially since I considered being one.

I know exactly which video you are talking about.

The guy was told to sit on the curb by the cops. he did for about 10 minutes. the then became verbally belligerent, and started getting up and moving around. the cops then attempted to restrain him while he continued to struggle to the cops starte beating him with fists and nightsticks to force him to submit. he did not. If the cops let up on a suspect everytime they said "i cant breathe"(which he obviously could seeing as how he could still shout) suspects coul grab a hidden weapon or use the break to recover strength to fight back some more.

Bottom line, the guy kept struggling and resisting and the cops kept restraining.

He was mentally ill. Don't throw bombs at disturbed people. If you think they are going to be dangerous, maintain your distance.

If they knew he reacted violently to being removed from his home, as I'm sure you would at least consider doing while being removed from yours, they shouldn't have cornered him in close proximity with guns.

If you say he was living illegally, please remember that he was mentally ill. Evictions from plots of dirt don't require guns, especially when a person is mentally ill.

He only pulled the knives out after they had bombed him, tazed him, and shot him with rubber bullets. Under that stress, it's hard to know what a real bullet is. He had made no violent motions before this. He only reacted after they loosed the dog on him.

And the suicide analogy is spot on, because the police knew that he had the potential for acting violently, which means that bringing the use of lethal force against him means that they knew they were justified to kill him if he reacted with any violence. They pushed him when they attacked him with non lethal, but incredibly intimidating force.

And lastly. his last words before being bombed were "I can protect you."

In all of these cases the cops could have obviously handled the situation better. But 90% of the blame shoul fall on the suspects; they started it, they escalated it and they payed for it.

Its like blaming the bouncers for your bloody face and bruised body when you get too drunk at a bar, refuse to leave, resist the bouncer and then get fucked up by a couple bouncers on your way out the back door.

IMO dont break and ignore laws and then expect to be protected by them when its convinient. Life shouldnt work that way.

If you are honestly trying to justify how those officers handled that situation than you are fucked in the head. I didn't know being verbally belligerent was worthy of a beating. Wasn't he detained too? Aka he had cuffs on? Yeah im sure he cod totally assault an officer with his hands behind his back...Also 3 men beating one defensless man is sickening and unecissary. Your first amendment right means you can say whatever the fuck you want to an officer of the law so beating someone for being "verbally belligerent" is completely unjustified. Those officers absolutely overreacted and (i cant remember if they were or not) should have been suspended.

I also agree with the outcome of this incident, its one thing to be verbally disagreeable with an officer, its another to pull a knife on one, especially when you are in an area you aren't supposed to be.

THe cops absolutely could have handle the situation better. But in no way was the guys death the fault of the offficers.

Whats the difference between this situation and this example:

Cops go and try to detain a known gang member who they see selling crack on the corner. The cops approach him and the guy adopts a defensive stance while backing away and tells them to stay the fuck away...he appears to be on PCP. After trying to talk him down for a few minutes, the cops try to taze the guy and send in a dog. the suspect, instead of giving up and surrenduring, pulls out a knife and and wields it in the direction of the cops who were rushing in to try and take down the stunned suspect. tthe cops then shoot the suspect to avoid being stabbed.

You can't ask a mentally ill person who lives on a dirt patch by himself to be accountable for zoning issues and the legality of his campsite. If he'd been there for over a month, it's different than getting kicked off of a park bench in the morning.

And as far as escalating it, the man had packed his personals, said "I can protect you guys," and also claimed he worked for the Department of Defense.

Signs of the officers losing their cool come as soon as Boyd asks the officers not to "act stupid," and the officer says, "We're not gonna act stupid."

At that point, a well trained officer would have attempted to control the situation by restating their purpose for being there, or offering help, using a phrase like: "James, we're not here to hurt you, you're camped in a dangerous area and we need to escort you to a safe place to stay." In this case, the officer was acting reactionary.

Those men may have not been out for blood, but they clearly lacked the training and compassion to act otherwise.

no cuffs where on. he was physically resisting arrest. he continued to physically resist the entire time the cops were on him. If he had at any point said "i give up" and gone limp it would hhave all stopped.

Obviously the cops should have handled it better, but murder it is not.

And FWIW the cops were not hired back to the Fullerton PD.

The cops were there for three hours, had a detailed description of the man's entire history, and had no reason to get close to him. Sure, it might have been a standoff, but no one needed to die.

Bottom line is that the cops knew exactly who they were dealing with, and even how he would react.

the officers had tried to talk this guy down for 3 hours. it didnt work. The man knew he had to move, he knew the cops were authority figures who had to be obeyed. he chose to not surrender. he chose to resist.

When the cops attempted to force his surrender, he attacked them with deadly force. Just cause youre mentally ill doesnt give you cart blanche to be physically aggressive and violent.

by your logic, cops would just never do anything in gangland areas because enforcing the law woul be too dangerous for the people breaking those laws.


Cops shouldnt be afraid to enforce laws because they are afraid the law breakers may get hurt. Cops should ONLY be concerned with ensuring law abiding citizens and other officers do not get hurt.

Killing people isn't enforcing the law unless their is imminent danger. Knowing that you're dealing with a homeless person who doesn't like being evicted doesn't mean bring guns.

And really with the gang bullshit? Have you ever seen how arrests in drug trafficking and gang violence work? Ever watched a movie about the mafia? It takes years sometimes to get incriminating info on a known gangster so that they will be convicted. Gangsters kill people while being watched by the police. This man had all of three hours of trying to not be evicted.

It's law enforcement's job to build a case, and bring people to court. to court, not execute street style assassinations.

The rule of law applies to everybody. This man wasn't committing the felony offense of selling drugs, he was squatting.

The police threw a flash bang grenade at him because he was taking too long to comply. This triggered a defensive response in a man who was known to have defensive responses.

Maybe instead of sending in guns they should have sent a negotiator. Given the man a radio. Used snipers. They had all the time in the world to set up.

If you think a human life isn't worth more than three hours and some non-military tactics I'm sorry.

Bottom line is only a judge should send a man to death, especially if the man isn't trying to hurt anyone.

The man on the street corner is in public. He appears to be on PCP. If he appears to be doing that he has to be acting incredibly strangely. Otherwise he wouldn't appear to be on anything.

You only allow a few minutes before they send a dog in. There is no reason to send a dog in in the first place.

I have no idea if you're imagined man is acting dangerously towards anyone.

Police shouldn't send a dog in unless he is acting otherwise. If the imaginary dogs attacked the imaginary dude when he wasn't doing anything other than being a weirdo on an imaginary street corner, than he should be protected too.

My point still stands that there was a mountain of information about how to deal with Boyd, and it wasn't used, resulting in cops losing their cool and killing a man. That shouldn't happen to anyone.

And if you didnt picture a black or latino as the guy in my example you are straight up lying. of course a crack dealer can be any color, but we have seen sociologically trained to picture a younger man of color in the crack dealer role. Regardless of what the cops were doing before, the man pulled out a knife with the sole purpose of harming the police officers. I dont know about you, but if I had a mentally handicapped man coming at me with a knife I would have done the same thing.

As if cops get held to the same standard as regular citizens. And plenty of cases of blatant police brutality where the cops didn't receive shit for penalties.

The argument that as long as you don't do anything wrong doesn't justify people getting aggressively beaten or murdered, and there are plenty of cases where the people weren't doing shit. It's not a perfect world I get that. There are kids who will go off and yell "Fuck the police and all that" but then there's the other side where people will defend them to the end regardless of what they've done.

You should be held to the same laws that you enforce.

As far as this thread it's a total shit storm though and I'm outski.
