Skiing park and Rap(stereo type alert)

Why is it that two completely unrelated things are so closely tied together through edits and such. Seriously, I love rap but I just do not see the connection. Rappers talk about being poor, the struggle, partying and doing drugs(at least a lot of rap in edits). While generally park skiers are skiing in a grand worth of gear on a expensive mountain where mostly privileged kids hang out. Another aspect is the racial differences. Rap music is usually more appealing to African Americans while skiing is usually more appealing towards Caucasians. The only thing I could see relating park skiing and rap music is weed and being mellow(Henrik and Wutang). So what's your opinion on this? Do you even like rap? Do you think I'm just being to stereotypical? Remember this is only a discussion so feel free to state your opinion. Can't wait to hear the responses!

I would say a lot of teen kids listen to rap, it is probably one of the most common genres among that age group. Which is primarily who we see on this site and shredding through the park. Then the fact of the partying etc, kinda ties in.

I enjoy it, more of early 90's rap though. But all in all, the flow works out really well when cruising through the park and slippin and slidin around.

My go to.

i like rap and hip hop because i like that type of music, not because i ski. And i'll put that music in my season edit or whatever because i want my edit to get you pumped just as much as it got me pumped while skiing to that song.

Kinda make sense?

Yeah, i totally agree! White kids aint black kids! Techno is more appealing to us white people, so i have no idea why techno edits are so rare! I think it's time to be honest with ourself, and say fuck it! And party like its 1997 on the hill!!!

honestly tho, i dont think rap is too overpowering in edits. It flows really well, and lets be honest, the rap industry relies on white kids buying the records, its one of the most popular genres around. But i see a pretty good balance of classic rock, indy, rap, and modern edm (not that weird rave shit) in all of the edits on here. and like someone said, you just gotta accept it sometimes, i dont think anyone thinks theyre actually hood, they just like the music.

Extreme sports and hiphop attract similar crowds. I've almost never met a snowboarder that listens to blues or country.
It's the feeling behind it i guess? Hiphop is controversial in a way, and so are extreme sports. So it's easy to like both.
Like how people that like classic art, paintings and such also like classical music, it's relevant to each other.

Whatever gets you pumped gets you pumped. Rap is popular nowadays. If we were skiing park in the 60s people would probably listen to the Beatles or something. People want to listen to what music they like, and rap is what a lot of people like. I listen to rap or rock in the park. Depends what I'm feeling that day.

I listened to a music box version of Aphex Twin's Avril 14th, just stood and cried for the duration of there song. Personally, getting all sensitive and emo on the hill is not that way to go, rap all the way.

It's all about the beats and attitudes in a predictable environment for self-expression, bit like a dance floor.

The two Japanese guys that came 2nd and 3rd in the Sochi I think were both listening to music. At least one pulled out their plugs, maybe both.

I love hip hop regardless but with skiing it's about the beat at least for me. The flow of the rhyme scheme and the snare or whatever the consistent beat is in the background. When you blast that in your ears you flow with it. It's like a metronome. You just casually flow with the beat whether it's in and out of those perfect turns or shredding a line through the park. It also get's you pumped up to throw down.

Also not every person on the mountain is your rich suburban kid. Now a lot of it is heading that way with ski camps etc but there are still plenty of people out there killing it that are all love of the sport and natural ability.

And in general your thread is something that's been hashed out a million times.

I've made quite a few edits. About 50% of them I've used rap. It just works good most of the time because of the beat. Nothing more sick than stomping a trick on every snare hit or something.

That video was like 150-160 bpm hahha. I actually like that weird rave shit and trance, but I would never use it in an edit, (or probably not in case some song really fits well).

I dont like rap, but what I do like to put in edits is downtempo, chill out, instrumental hip hop, glitch hop, and basically anything else with sort a laid back beat. Like a lot of other people said, skiing flows really well with anything heavily rhythm driven, which rap is. I like to see variety in music in the edits I watch and I do see a little too much rap for my taste, but I mean it all comes down to your personal preference and whatever you feel works well with your mood, so do you man.

This is my guess.

Until recently, freeskiing was a counter culture deviating away from the rules and guidelines of moguls aerials. In order to differentiate from the other sects of skiing, we chose to start dressing and portraying ourselves in ways that were different than what was seen in the comp scene (similar to the rap industry when it first got started). So then over the years it escalated to wearing bandanas, XXXXXL clothing, and listening gangster music making an apparent separation between the different styles of skiing.





...But the short answer is because your average park rat is between the ages of 13-18 and that's the cool thing to listen to in high school.
