Z-PAULY.after some workouts or when i stop working out for a bit and throw myself back into my (almost) usual training routines sometimes i get lightheaded, a nauseous throwup feeling, fatigued tiredness. is this because i should ease my body back into my workouts and im starting too harsh? also should i eat breakfast before a morning workout or after?


yes, you should ease back into before you hurt yourself. I felt that throwup feeling recently after taking a week or two break. It reminded me of the feeling in bootcamp when they pushed us to the limit running and all i wanted to do was throwup. So, it is good you're pushing yourself. The problem with lifting weights is you can really hurt yourself if you cannot handle the weight and you lose form. After a little break I would lower the weight by a little and if it feels too light you can always move up.

For me, I wake up around 4:45am, eat breakfast, shave and then take a 20 min drive to the gym. So, roughly an hour between breakfast and working out and I feel good. I definitely recommend eating before working out. If you're getting light headed remember to breath and take a nice deep breath while standing up. If you faint it is not going the end well!

Chubz.Dropped over 40 seconds off my mile time today.
10:53 yesterday, 10:07 today. STOKEEDDD going for under 10 tomorrow.

People who are born runners will never understand the struggle that anyone else has to go through when they start out running. When I started out I was chubby and couldn't even keep going for longer than 5 mins. When I broke my first 10 min mile it was an amazing feeling! As I continued to run and lose weight I was able to go further and faster. At the peak of my running 'career' i was able to run comsistent 8 min miles...then I fucked up my knee and stopped running altogether.

Now I just do Crossfit but every couple of weeks I'll try a 5km on a treadmill to make sure I can still manage it in under 25mins

Anxiety and stress and pushing it hard can do that to me too. Do you use a pre workout? Because that will hieghten anxiety and make me feel close to puking after a hard set.

When you say you stop working out for a bit, how long are we talking? A week or two off isn't going to make much of a difference. In fact I often hit pr's if I've gone heavy for a while and then have a week off.

With regards to feeling lightheaded/nauseous/fatigued, do you eat anything leading up to a workout? Are you going significant amounts of time between eating and working out? There have been days when I don't eat enough or eat crap (McDonald's, etc) in the hours leading up to a workout and I feel terrible.

That said, there have also been workouts when I just push too hard or have certain movements that almost always make me feel nauseous (ie. rowing sprints have made me puke).

Nah we understand. We feel the same when we break the 6, 5, or even 4 minute mark. I was super stoked when I ran my first 5 min mile.

I get nauseous more than half the time I work out. I usually fast (I don't eat before my workouts then eat a decent sized meal after) but sometimes I eat before my workout, especially when Im at school and after a hard night of drinking. At least for me I feel a lot better but don't do it often because I drink a protein supplement before working out and that usually fills me up. Also, when I drink water at the gym (on an empty stomach) it usually makes me feel nauseous. I've just gotten used to it.

Yup too much water on an empty stomach is an uncomfortable feeling

since I only drink hard one or two nights a week I like to take the following day off from working out. If I plan good, I also like to rest the day I drink hard as well. If you could sleep with an IV in you'd probably be good. Since that is not realistic it is probably best to just rest. If you want to workout I recommend a hike or bike ride.

Yeah I certainly don't do it often but I find myself in situations where I go to the gym hungover (since I go 4-5 times a week at school and drink 3 times a week sometimes there is overlap). After a night out I'll usually put down one of those big gatorades or a couple glasses of water before bed to ease the hangover (when I do this my hangovers are super mild) but yeah I see what you are saying.

its largely due to genetics...unless you want to not enjoy life to the fullest. Personally ive never been above 6%-7% and i have to pound food to keep weight on. Dudes who are naturally a little more insulated will really have to bust ass at all times to stay looking cut up. Honestly, just use the mirror. if you feel you want to lose some more fat, pick up an outdoor sport as a hobby ie MTB, trail running. itll make you be active even on your rest days, and at your age it really is difficult to overtrain if your sleep and food intake are halfway decent. With your diet, focus on lean meat, and green leafy veggies. only eat starchy carbs in a 4 hour window surrounding your workout. dont be OCD with it though, it sucks to be around THAT guy. plus, the whole reason you want to look good is to improve your life. dont improve one part of your life by wrecking another, ya dig?
What i generally do is mini bulking cycles of 3-4 weeks where i will put on about 7-8 lbs of muscle due to "muscle memory" and then coast for 8-10 weeks, then repeat. the whole time i stay super lean, even when im coasting(eg excessive partying, lack of sleep etc). I have my diet and training exactly dialed when i do the mini bulking cycles though, and ive done it enough i know exactly how to manipulate them both. Im finishing the first week of a bulking cycle right now and im pretty darn sore at the moment due to the increased training volume, but im eating enough to recover well and ive already put on about 2.5 -3lbs.

General rule of thumb is to squat heavy twice/week, pull heavy once a week, do a heavy day and a hypertrophy day of vertical pulling/pressing,horizontal pulling/pressing. This lays down a mean base of strength and size and then before ski season i transfer that into a more explosive low volume weight room routine mixed with hitting the trails hard on my bike to build up lactic acid threshold and to dial in my cardio(my trails end up being something damn close to 50 mins of HIIT followed by 5-10 minutes of downhill haha.)

Good Job man! props! running takes dedication. ive always been pretty good at running with my best at 6:13 earlier around march. my knees have been making it hard to beat but im hoping for under six soon.

Don't get machines, they are expensive and take up a fair amount of room.
in order or price/importance:

adjustable dumbbells
sturdy bench (adjustable)
decent pull-up bar
barbell with plates/rack/good clips
rubber mats

i know a guy who made all his stuff out of farm equipment which is pretty cool, but look online for second hand stuff it is pretty easy to get ripped off on stuff if you buy it full price

other useful stuff to have but not important:

rowing machine
yoga mat
exercise ball
sand bags to stabilise your barbell rack
skipping rope
weight storage rack
resistance bands
weight belt for pull ups

it pretty much depends on how much you want to spend/how into it you are, you can pretty much do variations of most exercises with just dumbbells. Cardio-wise its good to have a rower because you can go cycling or running pretty easy anyway, but they can be way expensive.

is this in like a garage? if you get a pull-up bar be super careful drilling it in and make sure you get it at the right height

@californiagrown I hate that it has to due largely with genetics. I've done those little tests though like wrap your hand around your wrist and it says I'm a mesomorph. Ill just up my cardio more I guess. Currently my routine is weights for 50 mins cardio for 20 mins but I go decently hard in those 20. That's 6 days a week. Rarely do I lift without doing cardio. My aerobic capacity is quite good now, I'm regularly running miles at 6:10. I'll be starting hockey up again in the next few weeks so that will fill in as my hobby.

hahahahahahaha thats really all you NEED. as the months or years go on, youll get bored and will start picking up dumbell handles, bumper plates, tires etc.

But starting out, all you need is what loopie said + iron plates.

Pretty much yup.

I'm working shift work at a northern mine site and that's about all they've got in the gym, which is more than enough to keep me happy. More plates than I can lift + all you can eat = PRs. Just hit a 500x3 deadlift, so that's got me fired up.

almost got my head smashed in by some huuuuuge hood animal. halfway through my second set he taps me on the shoulder and starts talking, Im confused so I take out my headphone when I realize he's accusing me of taking 'his' machine. I'm still confused then I just lose it when he starts trying to change the weight while Im on it. Everyone in the gym without headphones can hear and the rest probably pick up on the body language.

me "I never saw you on it and you havent been on it in at least 5 minutes"
him: "you still should ask before you change the weight" (not like these idiots rack their own weight anyways, ever)
me: "ask who? you weren't on it and its not yours"
him: grabs the handles and trys to mean mug me
me laughing: "get the fuck out of here, leave me alone you fucking loser, you think Im just going to get off bc your big? youre not going to do shit in here so get the fuck out of here, leave me the fuck alone".
him "you betta stop loud mouffin, you betta stop loud mouffin"
me "or what, what are you going to do? nothing, so stop acting like you are and get the fuck out of here and leave me alone"
him "I don't have to leave you alone but that loud mouffin IS gonna make me do somethin"
me still laughing trying as hard as possible to be obnoxious "yea, no its not so get the fuck out of here and leave me alone, how many excercises are you doing right now anyway?"

then he finally walked away and pretended to be more interested in talking to his friends about whatever lift they were gonna do next. he came back later and switched out sets

Because most people who are in these situations don't go to the gym to workout. They go to fuck around and kill time with their homies. That's why asking that dude to work in wouldn't have worked. He wasn't even lifting probably. I work in with people now and then but the gym scene is different now. They leave all their weights u racked and leave for 10 minutes and expect everyone to avoid their machine. Why should we cater to that bullshit?

yeah, and when you start working on that piece of equipment and they come up to you and say what the hell, you say " oh, my bad i didnt see anyone on it for a while and i thoughts someone just didnt rack the weights. you mind if i work in with you?"

I do this all the time. Big dudes who have been in the iron game for years, 20 year old meathead crews, random 50 year olds... it doesnt matter. Show some respect, realize that you swooped on something they have claim to, and propose a mutually beneficial solution. No one, and i repeat no one has ever turned down my offer to work in in my 10+ years of gym life.


Its people like you who cop an attitude to combat someone elses attitude that makes the gym have a shitty agro vibe a lot of times. Dude, mellow out. If you didnt want to deal with this shit you would have your own gym or go to a hardcore gym, or go on off hours. But you dont. You chose to use this gym, at peak time. Now make the best of it and dont start copping an attitude. you are just as bad as the other assholes.

Disagree, if he was as big as it sounds I bet he lifts plenty. That doesn't mean he wasn't a douche though, but in turn, that doesn't mean that anyone should talk to him that way. Being a dick to dicks doesn't make you a hero, it makes you a dick.

Anyways, getting back into cardio a little bit. I want to cut down on calories a bit (will be difficult because it might be in my genes to ingest everything within arms reach) and start cardio again. I haven't been to the gym consistently in months (since school ended) so I'm looking forward to starting that up again too. Will be posting if I have any notable advances.

Those here who primarily use their university gym - what do you do when you go home? Do you have a separate gym membership?

I'm not saying to be rude or be a dick. He could have handled it better. But I'm also not going to hop off. I'm sorry but you aren't the de facto gym person on NS to say what's right. I'm sure you expect people to follow a certain type of etiquette in other public places so why should there be none in the gym? I just don't understand this. I'm fine when guys work in but if your that dude who left your bag at the squat rack for 15 minutes or more, causing other people to alter their workouts and the you come back expecting it to be as you left it, then no you aren't working in.

'if some huge asshole tries to intimidate you and take something that doesn't belong to them you should apologize immediately and give them whatever they want' its not like this was a back alley and he wanted my iphone, he was bluffing and it was obvious and it pissed me off that he thought it would work

maybe I didn't describe it well enough but idk how anyone would feel bad for that guy. I think its hilarious when I imagine him carpooling back to his one bedroom and worrying if he has enough minutes left on his cricket phone to get to the end of the month

California made a great point about ways to not get so worked up. Sounds like your ego is talking here. Don't worry so much about what the meathead does when he leaves the gym and just handle the situation different next time...

You sound just as bad as the guy you are complaining about and come across as even more of a dick because you are bringing assumed social status into it, which has nothing to do with anything at the gym.

If you wanna gain weight, focus on legs, back, and chest in that order. Your legs make up 65% of your body weight and are the easiest thing to grow of you work at them

usually i would get like a 3 month pass for the summer at the one in my hometown. then you get to see old friends and they compliment you on your rockin bod. works better for the ones you haven't seen in a year or more

i sometimes feel like the gym police at my one gym i go to, its an LA fitness so its a commercial gym, but my huge pet peeve is when people dont re-rack their weights, ive literally gone up to people after they've walked away from their bench,squat rack etc. just to nicely ask "hey are you finished over there?" them-"Yea" me- "ok wanna go re-rack your weights now" id say 100% of the time they do it. At my other gym where i go primarily during the week, i never EVER seen weights not re-racked or anything out of place. It really surprises me because the demographic is pretty much the same between both gyms i go to, and its not like they have someone working going around doing it. Maybe because its a smaller family owned gym? I really have no idea but these bigger commercial gym really need to get their shit together. But yeah to the guy who got into the confrontation, like cali said that could have been easily avoided, but thats done with so whatever. But like cali said in my 10+ years of being a member of a gym anytime ive asked to work in with someone (not a group of people) they have always said sure to my memory.

i don't understand people who don't keep the gym tidy either, there's plenty of time during your rest periods and there's nothing much else to do, also people who use like 3 barbells at the same time

No I'm not.. That's completely true. Yea calves are hard to grow but your quads and hamstrings can see size-able gains in just a month of doing legs twice a week. Your next biggest muscle group is your back obviously.

idk why ppl are saying it could have been handled better, I kept my dignity, got what I wanted, and when he came back humble I let him get on before my last set. And he gave me a nod yesterday so hes not as upset as some of you.

I went to new york and ate like shit so when I got back sunday night I made a goal for myself to get fit for when school starts. Ive dropped a pound and a half in three days so im pretty stoked on that. Today I got 10kms on the bike in 20 minutes so that was cool.

Good luck man, stay motivated. But, don't worry about numbers so much. You can weigh 1.5 lbs different just weighing yourself different times of the same day. Instead, judge progress based on what you look like and how you feel and weigh yourself less.

so iv been working out off and on for the past two years. i caught on later in highschool to how much lifting can help keep me healthy. i generally stop going as much when im in soccer season. which tends to be pretty much all year long. i need to gain a little weight as im jumping into college ball and need to hold my own. but half my game is my speed and agility.

my questions is how to gain strength without bulking a bunch? my muscles have great endurance and above average strength for my age. is it as simple as low weight, high reps? im trying to also build muscle strength so im a little out of my depth in the understanding of the body.
