Should pro athletes be punished for using drugs like weed and coke even though they aren't PEDs and don't nearly have the same type of effect steroids do.plus in the future weed could be legal in more states
"On July 13, 2009 he revealed that he used cocaine three days before the Dutch championships in Rotterdam. Van Gelder said he very much regretted his "lapse" and called himself "incredibly stupid". He has since had to return his national championship gold medal, and was suspended by the Dutch Gymnastics Union. IOC regulations implied that because of the suspension he would not be admitted to the Olympic Games in 2012. He was also fired from his job with the Dutch military, as they have a 'zero tolerance' drugs policy"
Ganja is an indirect performance enhancer as it allows athletes to relax and helps some sleep better. If some athletes are smoking weed and getting these effects it gives them an unfair advantage over the rest of the athlete pool.
You have a definite point. Maybe it increases their appetite beyond what they would usually eat and could be seen as a performance enhancer for that aspect.
anyone can eat a lot, it doesn't really matter whether you've smoked or not. Also, (personally) when I'm high I prefer things with lots of sugar and fat, so it would only be detrimental to the athlete's performance
My friend races in triathalons and bike races and he was told it is perfornance enhancing because it helps your muscles get more oxygen, resulting in a bit more stamina.
Well, it could help against the pressure in big competitions like x-games and help you relax more as you say, but i don't think it makes that much of a difference really. If you got nerves before a run, i don't think weed would help you be and stay compleetly relaxed.
No your friend was told wrong. Occasional pot smoking has been linked to a larger lung capacity. For a non smoking person this would be considered a enhancing property. In reality the smoke effect the lining of the lungs thus not allowing as much oxygen through the membrane wall. Basically the lungs need to take in more volume to do the same job. No performance enhancements here.
Weed may be legal in the future, but as it stands now its not. Competitions like the Olympics are about more than just performance. They're about fair play, which means playing by ALL rules such as the rules of the sport AND the country. It would be setting a pretty poor example if the IOC and FIS etc. were condoning the use of psychoactives. Not to mention, it DOES impair your judgement and thus is less safe than being sober. I don't think that pot or coke should be in the same category as steroids, but I don't see how it is right to condone illicit activity in sport either.
If you don't smoke the day of the event then the weed doesn't effect your performance. What someone does on their personal time should not matter. Doesn't mean they are condoning it, just means they let the athletes do what they want with their personal lives.
so a football player smokes everyday for a year except the 16 sundays he plays - you gonna tell me just because he didnt smoke on the day of this game it won't affect his performance?
I've got nothing against weed and I think it gets an unfair label, but that is just a dumbass statement
I know which study you're talking about, but the researchers also concluded that the lung capacity of the moderate smokes was less than that of someone who exercises a lot. They speculated that smokers have the higher capacity because people tend to take big hits and hold them in, essential conditioning the lungs to hold higher volume. They also said that frequent smokers had less than average lung capacity.
How so? Cause he can relax when they're not playing football? Relaxing is an unfair advantage? Just because it is against the law doesn't mean i have to pretend to support the law against it.
everything is drugs, from the aspirin for pain to the orange you ate. Both are body altering substances as it brings in an extra dose of molecules that will change your body.
So clarify your question with a more educated one.
