This lady is a trophy hunter. Hopefully she'll be exiled from South Africa. anyways. Here's the source, along with photos of the other animals she killed for no other reason than the the thrill of the hunt.

NEW YORK — An American television host prompted outrage Friday after boasting online that she had killed a lion in South Africa.

Melissa Bachman, an avid hunter who produces programs on the American outdoors, posted a photograph on Facebook and Twitter of her holding a rifle and smiling beside the corpse of a large male lion.

“Incredible day in South Africa,” the self-styled “hardcore huntress” said of her pursuits at the Maroi Conservancy, adding: “Stalked inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion – what a hunt!”

A furious online reaction led Ms Bachman to deactivate her Facebook and Twitter pages within hours. It also prompted an online petition asking the South African government to bar her from returning.

Did she have a permit and everything? I dont see what the problem would be if this was a registered kill considering she was a hunter.. They have farms in Africa that allow you to hunt the stocked animals, im sure thats also possible

Some people like to hunt. Lots of Lion hunts in Africa are on large ranches and are essentially "bred in captivity". I dont see anything wrong woth it and she probably paid a shitton of money for it which goes to support the ranch.

I have absolutely no problem with her killing that lion. African wildlife is supported by hunters. The reason there still is wildlife in Africa is because of hunters. That said, this lion killed in SA is a bit different. You must understand that lions in SA are bred in high-fenced game ranches for the sole purpose of being shot. These lions are not wild, were never wild, and never will be wild. They are bred similarly to how cows are bred, then sold to "Great White Hunters" to come shoot. You will notice I have not said "hunt."

Lion farming and shooting in SA is big business. Africa as a whole has fewer and fewer lions and opportunities to hunt them are far fewer than the demand. As such they command extremely high prices. To harvest a wild African lion in Tanzania or Zimbabwe is a 30K - 50K undertaking. SA lions are much, much cheaper, are bred to have bigger manes (what trophy hunters value) and do not interact with other lions. As such their manes remain intact, they do not get scarred, success is virtually guaranteed, etc.

SA lion hunting is a commercial endeavor, nothing more. While I have absolutely no respect for this "hard won trophy," I do support the freedom of choice that this hunter exercised. If she wants to pay 20K for a trophy penned lion, so be it. What you need to understand is that this does not embody all African hunting. Hunting in SA is entirely different from other parts of Africa, with the exception of some parts of Namibia. All animals shot in SA are on high-fenced ranches.

In the rest of Africa - Tanzania, Ethiopia, Botswana (RIP), Zimbabwe, Cameroon, etc, etc, hunters are the stewards of wildlife. On a continent where "anything goes" hunters are the ones providing the financial incentives for wildlife management and protection. Truly, if there was no trophy hunting there would be very, very little wildlife in Africa as a whole. For proof, just look to Kenya which outlawed hunting a few decades ago. Outside of a very few national parks the country is devoid of wildlife. Back when Kenya was Tanganyika and sport hunting was allowed, the game "paid their way" and flourished. Tanzania is an excellent example of what sound sport hunting practices can do to conserve, protect, and expand game species.

What is wrong with this is that the stupid bitch had a high powered rifle to kill this lion. all the lion had to use to defend himself was the natural world around him...its pretty obvious why she won. Lets say the lion also had a rifle, then it would be much more fair

thats idiotic. even if a lion was smart enough and could stand up it would need opposable thumbs to hold and shoot the gun, EVEN then it would still be useless because theres no way those big lion fingers could pull the trigger. you fucking moron.

Dewd ur wrong. Lions have claws, or I think the scientific term is talon. These talons, like the lions penis, have sharp barbs on them so they can grip things like rifles, WHICH GOD DESIGNED THEM TO DO. Thanks Obama.

Its a reasonable debate, she has gotten some bad press, but we don't know how she contributes in other ways to conservations. Personally, I find trophy hunting always to be upsetting but we shouldnt jump to conclusions

If she did it legally, then I don't see the big deal.

However IMO, I think a lot of big game hunters probably have something of a superiority complex to want to shoot something as cool as a Lion or a Kodiak bear. I live in an area where hunting for deer, grouse, moose, etc. for food is a popular activity, and while I've never done it, I have no problem with it and I'll never turn down some wild game for the freezer. But I just don't see the allure of paying thousands and thousands of dollars to shoot a lion that is fenced in on a glorified farm, just to put it's head on your wall. Can you even eat a Lion?

I certainly don't want her to "get mauled to death by lions" but I question the character of people like her. I like the practice of hunting for food, but trophy hunting is for strange little men looking to get a notch on their belt, IMO.

I'm going to disagree with you. (Now I know this was a slightly different time) but my Grandfather was a big game hunter and he is one of the most respectable, humble men I've ever known, definitely missing this "superiority complex" you think hunters like this have. And yes, he's killed jaguars, ocelots, kodiaks, polar bears, mountain lions, and even has in his possession the "Grand Slam" (look it up) which is one of the hardest/most expensive/ time intensive accomplishments a true hunter can ever achieve.

But what sets him apart is that he truly hunted these creatures. For instance, he took a boat to kodiak island, tracked the bear on horseback for over a week camping in the brush, and killed it with one shot. Of course, he had it stuffed but he took care to give the meat to the local guides that helped him, or as much as they could carry. He even has the penis bone from it (its 6 inches alone) and as a prank uses it to mix peoples drinks.

I guess what I'm saying is that on all these endevours he took the hard road. Every trip was spent traveling by horseback and camping. Actually HUNTING the animals. And yes, he would absolutely be considered a big game hunter, you should see the trophies he has left (he sold many of them). There is a difference between flying out and killing an animal in a pen or actually hunting the animal, even though the end result is the same. Just because a hunter doesn't "eat the meat" or utilize the whole animal doesn't discredit the skill and knowledge it takes to kill some of these beasts. In all honesty and all previous jokes a side, as long as this woman actually hunted and killed the animal while having respect for said hunt and animal at the same time, I really don't have a problem at all with this. I guarantee she had to wait a long time and paid a lot of money to do this. Its not like they hand over a couple thousand, walk onto a reservation, and shoot it (though there are illegal practices that do this) but if she is on t.v. I HIGHLY doubt she took that route.

There really is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Everything was done handled legally and ethically, with the proper permits, etc. The money (thousands of dollars) for this hunt and permit will only benefit the country, along with the meat from the lion.

Was it illegal by SA law (poaching)? I'm assuming not or else SA would have said that.

Does that make it ethical? Fuck no. And that money will benefit the owners of what is probably a lion ranch. It won't go to benefit the country at all, seeing as South Africa has the largest statistical difference between the rich and poor of any country on earth.

Would i ever hunt and kill a lion? Probably not, to me its such a majestic and powerful animal that i wouldn't kill it, like a bear or a bison. But im not going to whine about the people who do, hunting is necessary in the human controlled ecosystem we've created.

I will whine about SA hunting ranches, and the people who pay to use them. When I bow hunt deer, so much of the hunt is the experience. The hiking, the camping, the cold, the snow, the bonfires, the stalking, and even the chance of failure is what goes into making even a single kill on a small male 3 by 3 so much more worth it. Just going to a stocked ranch with some trees and spending 3 hours fake stalking to kill an animal bred to be killed would never satisfy me, and it also does nothing for the ecosystem which is one of the reasons i hunt in the first place.

Totally splitting hairs but one would think if your family does this and stuffs them you could tell a cheetah from a leopard.

Related to thread: I hunt for food, don't really like trophy hunting but I'm not gonna judge someone or look down on them for taking part. It is kinda sad though if it was just on a ranch and not a real "hunt" in the wild. That doesn't take much skill in my opinion.
