Is there a "proper" way to put on ski boots?

When I first started skiing I was to when you put on a ski boot that once your foot is in the boots your heel should sort of slide back into a little pocket. Then you buckle your boots from bottom to top depending on what kind of boots they are.
So, is there a better way? Or certain ways for different types of boots?

I've heard not to put boots on while sitting down (or you might get heel lift because your heel wasn't set down when you buckled). I've also heard about buckling from the bottom up, then re-buckling again (and if it's a 3 buckle boot to do the middle buckle last, if it's a 4 buckle boot do toe, top, 3rd from top, 2nd from top). I've heard powerstrap always last, but just like with the buckle you do it multiple times. I'm sure there is a 100% proper way to put boots on, but I'm also sure that you don't need to follow it 100% of the time (especially because it's probably very intricate and complicated....at least more complicated than the average person needs when putting a boot on...a world class racer or Seth Morrison might be a different story).

full tilts are super easy to get on, its almost as easy as putting on some sneakers and tying. Takes about 30 seconds to get both done up...

On the other hand my salomon ghosts are a bitch to get on until your used to it.. You have to take the liner out and put it on your foot and do up the lacing cable, then pry open the cuff/ankle transition with your fingers and jam your foot/liner in. This takes about 3-4 minutes and pinches my instep like a lobster...I can put them on with the liner in them, but the fit is awkward this way.

Personally on a traditional 4 buckle boot, I buckle the bottom of the top two buckles, then the top buckl, and the toe buckles last.

I go powerstrap, top 2 buckles, bottom 2 buckles, top 2 buckles, powerstrap.

and as said before, do it standing up so your foot does go straight to the bottom, and a tap on the heel (doesnt have to be overkill) just to make sure your back in the boot.

But aslong as your boot fits properly, its all preference there is no right/wrong way.

Its similar to motocross boots that I wear and talked to a guy in the shop about.

The buckle closest to your ankle is the most important. It keeps the foot back and down too.


For a 4 buckle boot you make sure your heel is seated in the boot, do the toe buckle first, then the next up, then the very top buckle and then the ankle.

with my full tilts, standing up, I put both feet in and slam them to get a snug squeeze, then I lace up my liner (spk liner) and push the tongue down to tighten the space around my foot, then it feels great. I do up my booster strap first, then I go from the top to bottom for the cables on loose setting, then I tighten the buckles as needed when I clip in.

No not at all... depends on the three buckle boot, but for example, three buckle nordica/fulltilt/dalbello  the middle buckle is at an angle so it actually pushes your heel back into the boot being very secure.

But three buckle boots do not suit everyones feet. I prefer the feel of a 4 buckle boot as it's what I have used since my racing days. and pretty much use the same boot set up now. (freeride head boot has the same shell as the race boot)

I dont know the order i buckle in but i always rebuckle at the top and during my first few runs. My buckle are very dependent on what sock I wear.

I always put em on standing up. Sitting down just doesnt feel right

You should strap them up bottom to top, strapping the bottom forces your foot to lie flat, mad the middle pushes your heel into its position.
