I owe $750 for filming an urban

this was my last day living in Colorado.. I was filming an urban session and didn't even get to hit the rail (notice in the photo that I'm wearing sneakers) and then the cops showed up and told us to break down the lip and pack it up. after being told at the scene that the owner wasn't pressing charges we thanked the officer for being courteous and left the scene.. I honestly thought of it as another example of how awesome people in Colorado are only, to find out today that he changed his mind and sued all three of us. totaling in $350 in restitution and $300 in court fees from each of us totaling $1050 to repaint a 30 ft railing? (which sounds closer to the cost of a brand new railing) and to top it all off, Colorado never sent me a summons so I missed this court date without talking to them and now have to try and get a warrant removed from out there...
this is absolute fucking bullshit and is really putting a dent in the funds for my move back to Tahoe. so fuck you mr. colorado snob, I'm glad I chose to move back to Cali.

if you didnt get a summons, and you had a mail forwarding address, then someone else fucked up there, not you. so if you really want to try and challenge it, you may have a chance.

I would assume they get permission whenever possible, and if they did not and still choose to hit something they don't make a post on newschoolers whining about the legal repercussions.

I'm also sure that nobody lied to the courts ever and sued them for an amount that is over three times the absolute highest cost it would be to repaint a railing that was in an absolute shit state (it was due for a paint job like 3 years ago) and I would know considering I have been working in construction for 6 years.. and since i called multiple painting companies in the Crested Butte area for estimations today, and the highest estimate I got was $250
if the dude had been around we would have asked but its his big ass vacation home and the lifts had shut down 2 weeks before this incident..
I have no problem taking responsibility and making right for any wrongs I've made.. but I do have a problem with people taking advantage of me and my friends just because they know we don't have money for lawyers.

To be honest don't hold me accountable for this, I have no clue what I'm talking about, just throwing this idea out there. This was in a movie and the lawsuit was over a million dollars.


Could you settle out of court? That would take a chunk out of the fees and maybe the guy would be more interested in gaining a quick buck than having to go through the trouble of the court.

You say he is suing you. How much time passed from when the incident happened to when you found out you were getting sued?
How did you find out you were being sued? You have to be Served papers by a Sherrif or special process server. It can't come through the mail. Did anyone accept papers pertaining to the lawsuit? The sheriff or process sever can leave them with almost anyone at the property you reside.
Do you have a job? If you do, can someone google your name and find out where you work? Suing a young person(asuming your young) with no job is really silly. Because if the person has no job and no money, what are you suing for? To get the guilty judgment? And still not be able to collect any money. When the person has a job they can hve their wages garnished. While i am not an attorney I have a lot of knowledge in civil lawsuits. Feel free to pm with any questions you might have.

lol the cop was totally cool the entire time I have nothing bad to say about the Crested Butte police force.. it was the douche bag vacation homeowner that told the cop he wasnt gonna press charges and then decided he wanted to fuck us

But you said you didn't even hit the handrail, so why on earth would it need to be repainted if no [aint was scrapped off? Am i missing something, cause it seems to me like they cant do anything if you never even touched the rail with your skis?

Whenever cops show up I give them the "Art Class" story.

I tell them that I'm doing a school project for my film and photography class on fusing of the elements of something you love to do with an urban environment, so freestyle skiing is something i love to do and i want to document doing it with an urban environment. I've used this excuse a few times and it works perfectly.

Literally told this to the cops who followed me to the minneapolis rail gardens so i could scope them out for the first time. I told them I was taking picture of the staircases for photography class and they said "Oh! That's fantastic! Just be out of here by 10:00pm because that's when the park closes."

If you get a ticket in B.C. way after the fact for some sort of violation like this, it is pretty easy to fight. They generally have to issue the ticket at the scene. The delay, change of scenery, lack of you actually doing anything and they can't prove otherwise, and lack of you admitting guilt at the scene are all in your favour.

Take responsibility for yourself and your actions and pay the man his money. Don't wanna get sued? Don't vandalize other people's stuff.

Well that's why. CB is one of the last "true" little ski towns left and the people who live there are really fucking proud of it and keep it in AMAZING shape. Shit they have heated roads in some places and it's crazy nice there. So that's all on you, even if you didn't hit the rail. That's kinda like the saying "wrong place at the wrong time", because you can't tell me if the cops wouldn't have showed up you weren't going to hit it. It's shitty but CB people have money and like to keep their town nice plan and simple and your urban sesh goes against that.
