New skis, How can I take care of them better?

Normaly skis dont get water logged, but im sure it could happen if they werent sealed in some spot. Edges rust, because they are steel. But, if you bring them inside after a day of skiing, and maybe leave a layer of wax on there over the summer, you shouldn't have too many problems with this. Its not that big of a deal when it happens anyway. Skis do make noises like that when they flex, thats just how skis are. I wouldnt worry about it. Also, this thread should probably be in gear talk.

they would only get waterlogged if they had a crack in the seal or weren't coated properly. you can spot rusty edges with wd40 (?), drying them thoroughly after use or maybe even wax.

As soon as i get home from the hill, no matter how tired, i go dry my skis, run a gummy stone on my edges, and finally apply a fat coat of wax without scraping. So the next time that i go skiing all i need to do is scrape and i am good to go! This will also keep ur skis in AMAZING shape since your bases will always be moist and not dry.

Wipe the skis off very well after u get back from the mountain. They wont rust

After I'm done skiing for the day I take some oil like WD40 and spray it on a rag, then run the rag around the the edges.

If you want to take care of them better, don't ski park with them.

Can skis soak up water?
- Yes, while skis are generally constructed to be watertight since snow it water sometimes that seal can be broken. Anytime there is a crack in the top sheet, side wall or base that is deep enough to reach the core water can seep in and waterlog the core (making them heavier) or even rot the core (making them weaker). Ways to avoid this, when done skiing for the day, don't leave your skis in the car/roof rack/roof box or garage or basement, take them inside somewhere warm so they can dry out properly, also, when you get the skis inside take a dry towel (I usually just keep one near where I store my skis in the winter) and whip down your skis. While whipping down your skis, look for cracks and core shots, if you can see the core or think a crack is deep enough you want to seal it, marine grade epoxy works best, but wood glue can work too, you don't need a lot, just enough to seal it.


Do your edges rust?
-Yes, edges can rust, they are steel after all. Following the steps above will help prevent rust too, but an extra step for edges is to use a gummy stone and lightly run down the edges at the end of the day (after drying them off), this will help prevent the rust from forming and take off what is already there.


When I flex my ski, it makes a little crackly sound...
-This is normal. Ever been outside in an intense windstorm and heard trees cracking nearby but no branches falling? It's normally when you first get the skis, they need to break in a little, they will eventually settle and stop doing that as much. Don't worry, you're not damaging the skis, this would happen while skiing as well.

The biggest thing is really to just bring your skis in at the end of the day and give them a whip down.
