Editing Software

Hey everybody. I have recently purchased a contour action camera, and I would like to start filming and editing and hopefully posting on here. I don't have any editing software besides windows movie maker and thats garbage, but I would like to know what is out there and what is "the best"
I want something thats not extremely difficult right from the get go, but I want something that isnt so easy a 6 year old could do it. Is there any recommendations you have, or what you use?

Contrary to popular belief, if you are making a simple edit there is nothing wrong with imovie, especially if you are filming exclusively on a contour.

That said, you could use final cut pro.

This.

Casey Neistat for example still almost exclusively uses iMovie HD 6 and he makes commercials for Nike and Mercedes.

He says he has windows movie maker so I would hazard a guess he is on a windows machine. Have look at some tutorials online op and see what software you like the look of and torrent it. No point buying anything until you know if your going to get into editing. Have a look for Vegas and Prem Pro.

My bad, I misread the OP. WMM is just fine too for your standard edit.

I use Premiere Pro CS6 and I love it so much, especially when interlinked with After Effects. Perfect combination. I've heard that Sony Vegas Pro is nice, I've never used it, but I love Premiere

Great value on some of the other options, beside pro.
with the option at discounted upgrades and more from there

I think they are all out, haha, to op, I used windows moviemaker for a year and it was fine, now I have I movie and it does plenty for me, just cut my first showreel on it.

thanks everyone. I dont like WMM just because I have tried editing some summer clips of my family's vacation and found that the quality of the edit was just poor, there wasnt the effects i wanted or the ability to overlap images and fade out/ fade in. I want something that i can do those with over several images, have almost like a scrapbook of pictures thrown ontop of each other and then thrown into a video. i have this image in my head of what i want, and it is hard to describe but WMM just cant do it for me.

Ok, wmv can do most of those things actually but from what you just said I think you want iMovie, that scrapbook effect you are talking about is built in. I never use that but it is super easy to do that kind of stuff. Can you use a Mac at school or something. I think with a more professional program you might end up in over you head... Just my 02€ since I started out editing my families vacation videos too.

most of the above posts have pretty much covered it. vegas is easy to use and fairly cheap, but it has enough that you can produce a decent edit with it. i personally like after effects, not the easiest program to work with, but essentailly limitless as far as the effects that you can create. i found that windows movie maker crashes too much when editing hd footage, and (as posted above) does not create a professional edit.

is this scrapbook effect you are talking about masking? or is it just simple fading in and out of shots?

my vote is for vegas. so easy my dad (computer illiterate) can use it, yet has a lot of potential to produce a professional edit.

is there a trial version of any of these programs i can srew arund with and try to get what i want out of them? if so can you guys post the link, or will i just have to rely on tutorials through youtube?
