Yep! As a shop manager for over 10 years, if a new guy ( one shift ) was asked a question and did not answer it correctly or at least ask someone who has the knowledge in the shop, said employee would not make it to the second shift. The correct way to handle this would have been to say..
" we will have x,y and z ski from Armada, Chances are you are referring to the El Ray. It is a great ski. They should be coming into the shop on this date and we would love to have you stop in and check out the whole line."
I don't want to bash you because you sound like a good guy. Love to ski and have a passion for the sport. I will say that who ever trained you needs to put in more work. Remember your general customer is not a NS'er or even a dedicated skier. Most just want to go and have fun. If they confuse a name or model so be it your job it to educate not make fun of. Good luck and have fun.

Really? The man is trying to run a successful business, not be a friend to his employees. And if he's been doing it for 10+ years, he probably has a pretty good idea how things should be done.

A good store manager doesn't fire someone after one shift due to something as trivial as this. I've worked retail for 11+ years. It's just my opinion though.

That's cool I probably wouldn't hire you. I have a great working relationship with all the employees. It is built out of respect. I hired them because I respect the knowledge and the passion for the sport they bring to the table. They respect me because I treat them fair and expect a professionalism out of our shop. We are successful because we teach, encourage and promote the sport we all love. Ski shops are fun and laid back, but it is still a business and must be treated like one. Sorry if people want to goof off all day and make fun of the lesser educated customer, that does not fly in my shop. We treat every person that walks into the shop with the same respect I demand out of everybody.

I'm not saying I would fire him for this offence I am saying he needs more training before I would even put him on the floor with customers. If I saw something on this site or over heard someone making fun of a customer THAT would get you fired in a heart beat. Thant being said my employees are told this their first day on the job so they know the consequences of such actions.

Well if he hadn't told him how to respond to customer inquiries on social media outlets, that would be more on the trainer/manager IMO. At least the kid tried, y'know? I'd be more along the lines of "Actually that was very subpar but let's learn from that- here, let me show you how to properly respond"...

Your'e right I did reread and it was in the state of question. I take back the assumption he was making fun of the customer. That being said, I would hope one of my employees would ask someone in the shop rather than an internet forums. See a good manager can even accept responsibility when they are wrong. My bad OP no disrespect.

Can't believe people would actually question SVmikes ethics....

Ski shop retail is not normal retail... Most customers are n00bs... and do rely on a knowledgeable staff member to help them choose products.

Our boss makes us read up on every brand we work with.. (luckily im a gear nerd so do this anyway).

So ya, I think his response was reasonable.

As for OP... Maybe should of asked your boss if you didn't know the answer before posting on NS.

1. You say your goal is to educate people with an interest in our sport. Then you say if a guy who has worked one shift is unable to answer a question correctly, he gets fired? How about you try "educating" said employee first.

2. This particular situation voids the concept of asking someone in the shop, as it appears OP was getting messaged on Facebook (although I suppose he could have been in the shop at the time).

Regardless, you should respect the fact that the new guy - rather than providing potentially false information - admitted to not knowing, as he had only just started working there. He asked about which skis the buyer was interested in, and even offered to look into it personally. Yeah, he was poking fun at the guy by posting a screenshot online, but he didn't release any names, locations, etc.

If you run a successful shop, then great. Stick to what you're doing. I'm simply pointing out your logical fallacies. OP did nothing wrong.

Educate yourself, in my last post I acknowledged that I miss spoke on OP making fun of the customer. That is what I took issue with, not his lack of knowledge. If an employee does not know the product that is MY fault as a manager. If he is rude, condescending and unhelpful, that is his or her problem. I am not saying this is the issue here. Again I misspoke in regards to the OP.
I find it funny that I read so many treads about how the guys at the local shop are ass holes or rude and such. This is the crap I am trying to stop. Every person walking trough the door is a potential sale. I don't give a shit if you are driving a Bentley or a Bike. Tall T or tie every customer deserves a knowledgeable, respectful shopping experience.

tell the kid to come in before christmas.  Judging by his grammar the parents will be doing the shopping for him anyways. what an adddiot.  Also, pipe down Mr. Store Manager. Go tutor your employees not some NS'ers looking to tell a "good" joke.

Harluet ride's em all anyways.  The best answer to the kids question would be questions that make him nod his head yes.  Pshh, sales brah.  It's just money.

How can you even judge that with a 3 message transfer on facebook? Not to mention the best way to learn in sales in working on the floor and trying to aid a customer and then asking for adequate help if needed. You learn much quicker from mistakes you make this way.
