Trying new jumps

Does experience with jumps help you judge how fast you should be going when trying a new jump? Is it common to straight air on the first attempt?

yeah you always straight air or do some small grab your first few times off a jump

Nothing wrong with straight airing, if you want to throw a grab you can usually decide to in the air, but don't feel like you need to bust something out if you haven't warmed up and tested the jumps.

on big jumps i am ussually to scared to do a straight air... safety 3 is the warm up trick mos def.

once you've skied long enough you can just look at a jump and tell.

although sometimes you will die anyhow.. i fuck up quite a bit... sometimes the first jump of the day will turn into the last jump of the day.. like if i land knoll or overshoot then i could be done depending.

i like joos trick but most of tha time you wanna be the first on tha resort so tha fisrt to tha jump. I personnally like to spin with grabs on firts hit. I normally set the spin for a five to see how tha landing looks like but if I see I'm gonna overshoot or caser tha shit, well I stop tha spin by doing moseley like spread to stop tha rotation... look ugly but it's just to test tha jump

yeah joos is right... i ussually watch someone who skis kinda like me... and see where there turn.. i dont match speeds i match tracks... i follow in tracks exactly... and then if i make it perfectly then the rest of the day i am set..

ussually it works pretty well and you wont fuck up too bad...

yea, if it's a big jump I definitly just spin a 360... keeps the mind busy so if you didn't judge it right you arn't thinking 'awh shit' the whole way... instead you're just floating a big three grab. hell - for a point I was more comfertable hitting big jumps switch the first few times...

If you want to make a straight air look cool you can just carve off the lip, it makes this really cool floating feeling. just dont carve off the landing or you are fucked for sure

i go straight air and decide if i wanna do a grab once im in the air. if im uncomfortable in the air i don't do anything and hope to land it. then the second time around i do the same thing, straight and maybe a grab.

My advice is dont do what nzskier says...

have you ever heard of Mikko? he rides for forum, he overshot a 60ft step down at mammoth for a mack dawg shoot by at least 60 feet. he was the first to hit the jump... think a little before you hit shit... cause if you fuck up a little on a big jump you could die. Mikko was in a coma for a long ass time and is still recuouping from the fall 2 seasons ago.

I hate the first hit of the day, especially when you're the first in the park, Normally the big table at sunshine(35 ft) you need alot to clear, so i did it normall and I overshot by like 20 feet, just a week after casing the big table at cop. It hurt and I skied around on one foot but near the end of the season I had better luck

I'm not trying to start a controversy, but I think warm up 360's... even though a lot of people do them, and so do I, aren't the greatest idea. If you hit the knoll... your twisting and landing pretty hard. And later you can play guess what ligament is fucked. But it definitely keeps your mind off something bad happened, and you'll be nice and loose when you fall.

yeah i'm definatly not telling everyone to go do 3s when they first hit a jump... thats something that only some people should do.. you know who you are.

yea what dirty said works fine for some people but im with gravtec. I much rather just hit the jump straight air once or twice if i fucked up so i get a feel for it. And if you do a 3 over it and the lip kicks you funny or you land weird you probably have a better chance of recovering if you arent spinning through the air

and joos said it right just watch what everyone else is doing and ask them how its hitting today if its slow ect.. or if you have to go first and test the jump haha well your screwed just give it your best shot

I usually do a 3grab or a tail or somethin on the first hit...never flip on your first hit on a jump though.

Forum Team Rider, Mikko Sjoblom - You Can Help!

In April of this past season one of the Forum team riders, Mikko Sjoblom hit an 80 foot table top. He hit the jump going way too fast and ended up flying 165 feet. He missed the tranny and landed completely flat.

He was in a coma that lasted for several weeks. The doctors thought that he did not have a very good chance to live. He has surprised everyone by not only coming out of the coma but regaining some movement and starting to speak a little bit. He still has a long hard road back to a full recovery.

We at MDP are giving some proceeds from the sales of our films to help with his extensive rehabilitation costs. We are hoping that some of you would also like to contribute to this fund.
