Exploring Abandoned Detroit

Some friends and I took a trip downtown to explore the "not so nice" side of Detroit. Thought I'd share some pics and tell you about some of what we saw.



The first building we went into was one of Detroit's old rec centers.

We found everything from old books, to drug needles and homeless people.


After touring the whole building, we walked next door to the abandoned projects and went all the way up one of the five buildings.

It was eerie seeing a 15 story building completely empty.


From the roof we could see an awesome view of our city.

As most of you know, Detroit is not all like this. It really isn't dangerous unless you're out asking for trouble. It was cool to experience this side of the city and I hope to do some more exploring soon.

This is sort of racist gawking at urban decay in poor AA communities.

If your not there to plant a tree or something do goodr like that I think you are pretty much asking for trouble.  Believe it or not lots of people would not feel bad for you one bit if some heads popped up and shanked yall.

Aw man stinks cause I was really a big fan of you.  Its really awesome when you are the first reply in every thread a teenager starts about drinking or smoking weed telling them sarcastically how cool they are.


Anyways this thread is about your area isn't it, why don't you grab a camera and backpack and join up and take some moving pictures of poverty...

What do you mean?  I said if he wants to go plant trees do it.  (Metaphor for if he has a good reason to go to the hood then go if there is a purpose.  I coached a lacrosse team in the worst part of Boston I've had a reason to go to these places but I wouldn't go there without one to check it out.)



What I took from this was a sense of- 'oh this is so cool check this out' which is fine for the most part however the subject at hand is 2 things.  A dangerous place that noone wants to be for a reason and an undesirable place was inhabited by someone recently.

DO you really think when the OP comes across homeless people squatting/living in one of these super cool buildings it will be a cool and fun exciting experience like the trip from these pictures on a nice sunny day was?

Is he going to take pictures of them?  THey are interesting too?

And furthermore I don't think these dudes did anything wrong, its fine to check something new out and be adventurous.  My response is only towards their attitudes of going back.

THey are acting like they have discovered the ultimate hidden play fort.

That its racist for a bunch of 16 year old middle class white kids to grab cameras and strap on backpacks and gawk at urban decay in poor AA communities.

And it won't be as fun and cool once they meet the few people still there.

It would be so cool to see all this stuff first person. Every piece of architecture and the destruction tells a story of its past. Its interesting to think of the structures and how they once prospered with life, and how they now lay vacant. I go to school at NMU with a lot of people from Detroit who have similar stories, it really intrigues me.

My God you seem like the most ignorant individual... its not that they are treating it as a "play fort", but more of an area to explore and see what things have become. Also in my opinion it would be interesting to imagine what the area was like after seeing what it has become.

I couldnt find the one of the abandoned russian ski resort,,, i emailed e.r. About it so hopefully ill find it and post it. It has this one pic of the top of the chairlift covered in a ton of snow on the peak of a huge mountain. Its so sick

Theres an abandoned resort in Canada near Calgary called Fortress Mountain where they've now set up a Cat Ski operation. I went on a cat day and it was pretty sick. All the old lifts were still there and the lodge thats totally unused now, had all its doorways blocked up with snow.
