Something that's always confused me is how come there aren't just a ton of crazy sick skiers and snowboarders from Japan?

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to Japanese snow culture. Just curious.

Japanese people really commit to their hobbies, like dedicate themselves fully to it, whether its skiing, baseball, trainspotting or weird porn.

Not that many people ski pow or park, but the ones that do are ballsy as hell and they ooze style. And generally they're friendly too, there's very little attitude on the ski hills.

And damn, I heard about 24/7 ski areas in Korea, but never actually saw proof of it. Fucking why don't they have that shit here. Americans are pussies.

im japanese and the reason they dont spend there time skiing and snowboarding is because the parents despise activities that will not promote success in the future. The japanese people are very proud, that is why they covered up what they did to the chinese in WWII.

I miss when SFTV had some decent stuff from the park, and everything wasn't so granola, and so serious. And trust me, if I could I would live in the backcountry, but I can't; so some variety would still be nice. And the seriousness, everything has to be a cinegraphic masterpiece, with some deep inner and inspiri story. I like that from time to time to, but it gets monotonous after awhile. And skiing doesn't have to be srs bzns all day long..... Change it up some Douglas! P.S. I also miss the, "Neext tiiihme, ahn Salomon FreeSKI TEE VEE," guy. He had shit on lock.

Kazuhiro Kokubo, Ayumu Hirano, Taku Hiraoka are all sick snowboarders. As far as I understand snowboarding is fucking huge in Japan, but like with many other things, the Japanese don't necessarily like to mix too much with other cultures. And I have seen a ton of fucking crazy snowboard movies come out of Japan, so it would seem that at least snowboarding is doing quite well in Japan.

I was once a break dancer, and I was pretty good too. (Sorry for bragging) - moving on. And right until about 2003, the americans were known as the best dancer, mind you break dancing had been around since the 60's. After 2003, the Koreans, Japanese and even the Chinese (General Asian population) came out and amazed everyone with their amazing talent. Because they were light and strong at the same time, they had this incredible gymnastic, spiny, but controlled ability to dance well. I quit because every time i would battle I would be beaten by some fucken crazy korean guy who was doing air flares and handspins

So I moved onto skating and skiing. I am now starting to see in skating, that the asians once again are dominating with their technical styles and extreme talent. I am not really seeing this in skiing, but I am sure, with their strong but light builds (scientifically proven) and their gymnastic ability, that they could do quite well

This is however not a bad thing, I just thought it was something to note

.....I want to live here. Everyone is just stoked. There's no judgement, there's no stigma. Plus 24 hour skiing. But they are all just out there to hang out with each other and enjoy the sport. Makes me hate our mountains and parks (at least just for a minute or two).

there is definitely a japanese snowboard scene and pros.

freeskiing (both park and big mountain) is less common but growing I think. it's a bit surprising though, cuz I remember way back in the day (around 2000) there was a park event in japan that all the big pros went to and had one of the biggest prize purses in the sport. not sure what happened to japanese park skiing after that.

In Japan, the younger generation is more into the snowboarding culture thing, so that leaves less skiers in that age group. I've seen some sick freeskiers here, just not many of them. It's crazy though, you go to Niseko and most of the locals are riding carve skis, which I just don't understand - no shortage of cash either. Doesn't make sense. But, yeah, I'll go with what others have said, when the Japanese commit to something, they go all out.

There used to be a fairly well known japanese park skier...have no idea what his name was, but i remember seeing him do a switch dub back at wsi big air in 2010...i think he may have won it even.

Saw a few japanese skiiers at the pipe in copper they were killing it. They were on a shoot and wearing all armada gear so im guessing they may have been am. sponsors. almost aksed them if they could do a japan grab.
