Yeah... was basically thinking this, but attaching a style sheet rather than jquery.

Ive never used ad block, but I can see how it is bothersome for a lot. I avoided NS for a while when I was at the coffee shop because of the FD ads. It's pretty awkward having a mom and kid stand behind you while you pull up a half naked woman on your screen. I just opted to not care and leave NS for at home. Now all my ads seem to be for financial shit, travel ads, ski ads, and high fashion so I'm not really bothered.

I did, pretty much why i do my best to block them, and do you use Ghostery? Also to eheath, why do you think people like netfix, on demand or tivo, adds are just visual noise.

netflixs cost money, on demand has ads sometimes and tivo is a little different. were talking about a free website and you idiots complain about a couple ads that dont make noise and can be ignored so easily...

squeegee bums and ads serve the same purpose.

they keep at you until they get your money. ads just do it by planting a seed in your head that makes you subconsciously remember their product. next time you go to buy an energy drink and see 10 different types, all you can think of is that big green fucking M that you see a billion times per day.

it's a way of conning you into purchasing something from them, much like a squeegee bum. if they bug you enough, they're going to get your buck.

and it's just not something i support. i understand its purpose and that it's effective, but i'm personally not interested in engaging if i have the power to avoid it.

and then there's the accidental click that opens up a new page and fucks up everything you were just typing...

having an ad on the home page, a specific ad section, or maybe a brief ad that opens with major videos or a "sponsored by [product]" message here or there, but do we really need flashy blinky animations and images of god knows what surrounding the webpage at all times, everywhere we navigate to? porn websites are bad enough for that, i don't need it on NS too..

so you may as well have adblock if you are impervious to their effect. either way, the end result is you not buying the shit they advertise.

i'm the same way, i'm not buying shit off ads either. but i also don't like to see them blinking in my face all day everywhere i go. and more so, the principle. i don't like companies even attempting to sway me in a petty attempt to bring business to themselves.

so back to the squeegee bum analogy, maybe you're happy to drive by them every day and just not give them their dollar. i wouldn't either, but i also choose to drive an alternate route and avoid them altogether. not seeing them at all is easier than putting up with and having to ignore them. so i guess my alternate route is just adblock.

Having ad block causes ns to earn less revenue, that's why I don't use it.

I suppose ads don't bother me as much and I don't understand why people think they're entitled to this perfect ad free experience for absolutely no expense to them. Oh well

bottom line of this should be that NS shouldn't look at the 80k as lost revenue, but as revenue that never existed in the first place.

if you own a shop you don't complain about the people who visit and don't buy anything. you don't say 'those people are lost money, I don't want them visiting the store'.

It's just what you need to expect with running a business. you will constantly be in contact with people who cost you nothing, yet gain you nothing directly. those who just brows.

especially if you offer a free product. if you run a bar and a group of people come in you fully expect that probably 1 person in that group is just going to have a water and not spend any money but enjoy the atmosphere all the same. it's just expected. you don't look at it as lost profit. you look at it positively that maybe he'll like the place and tell other friends. maybe he'll come back and buy a drink later.

at the end of the day though, NS is still better off with the 16% of members with adblock then not having that 16% at all. let's not forget they bring in revenue indirectly too. through donations and through linking the site and sharing the site and showing it to other people allowing it to grow.

I see the point you're trying to make, the difference is a shit ton of people pay for porn while also a ton dont. you could make the same agrument about downloading music, or movies, or streaming tv show for free, but its not quite the same. no one pays for NS or ski videos (other than movies) but NS isn't a huge corp. yes, they are owned by a bigger company but ns still has to provide its own revenue...

and yet they're losing money, a substantial amount, because i have adblock turned on? i don't frequent websites that ask me to turn adblock off because they need the money. they find other ways to make money. i don't see this thread on the other forums i visit. this thread is fucking stupid. you don't make a free website and then tell people they are being dicks by not paying for it (with their personal information).

I've got newschoolers greenlighted on adblock, but I still never see any ads. It's a shame because NS has some of the least obtrusive ads of any website. I definitely don't mind seeing the ads.

It must be one of my other add-ons blocking them. I'll experiment with disabling them all one-by-one to see what's blocking the ads.

After whitelisting newschoolers.com on AdBlock, Hoverzoom, and Ghostery, I finally got ads to display.

I can't figure out for the life of me why Hoverzoom would be blocking ads, but alas it was.

You sound a bit paranoid. Anyone can access your basic information and very legally. If you don't want the internet taking your basic information you probably shouldnt use it.

You think adblock stops people from accessing your information?

Do you know what an IP address is? I know you do. It contains everything and unless you're on some epic super encrypted proxy any website you visit can access your information for free and legally.

One day you'll see, its like if someone made a list of everything you did, every book your read, every movie you watched, every food you ate, every product you bought. It wouldn't be hard having all that to put together a list of stuff to make you look bad. Say you checked out a couple of books on Hitler, watched a saw movie or human centipede, bought a lighter and light bulbs at the store in the same visit, own a gun, and recently bought some ammo. All ready you can be made to look like some fucked up crack head who's about to go shoot some Jewish school. Point is it doesn't take much to be put together in a way to ruin your reputation. Not only that but jobs one day could use it to filter out people based off of statistics and one mistake could ruin your employment chances.

TONS of people on this site- plenty to make "enough" money. What is it up to now anyways- like $200k/month in ad revenues or something like that? In any case, if someone doesn't want to see the ads, who the fuck cares? Also who the fuck doesn't think $200k/month is "not enough" and warrants berating those who don't want to see the stupid fucking FD ads and those that start with "_______ hate this guy! Learn his secret to _________". I mean really. Chillax yourself.

I don't even use AdBlocker, but this attitude makes me want to put it on just to be a fucking cock about it since people seem to think I/we owe them something for the privilege of stopping by. That shit is stupid. I understand Bishop's desire to tell people that AdBlocker costs them revenue if they didn't know that, but your attitude that "If you use it you're a fucking piece of shit and should be banned" is fucking flat out retarded.

Just saying if everyone used adblock, NS would probably have to charge a membership since it is a business and businesses need to make money. Occasionally I'll turn ad block on for a week if there are ads I don't feel like dealing with, but that happens rarely. I can put up with 2 little rectangles while I'm surfing NS, to help the site I frequent at no direct cost to myself.

Sure if you are paranoid of people getting your information, keep it on. But is it that hard to ignore the ads?

And to answer your questions, I am obviously 12 and don't know anything.

When you have ad's like the one's about lawyers to sue ski resorts and other shit you can't really blame people. Maybe they should approve the ads ahead of time.



I don't use ad blocker but honestly don't see how you can bitch at people that do. Do I really care that much about some graphic art orgy in rome ad I got last night?

How the fuck can you blame people for wanting the skip the mostly bullshit ads. I was under the impression that the ad section was going to be for ski companies and not random whatever ads. I guess I was wrong.

A lot of the ads are fucking terrible.

I used to do that with myspace. They changed the ad system a few times and you had to change the code to make it work but it was still very successful.
