thus spoke zarathustra is one of my favourites. always feel so dumb when reading it because of its style. i am a german native speaker so i dont really know if it translates all that well.

Zen Buddhism (on your state of mind and how to view the world)
Epictetus (stoicism)
Gettier (challenges Plato's JTB theory of knoweldge)
John Stuart Mill (Utilitarianism)
Find some stuff about Hinduism too, especially Brahman

Jiddu Krishnamurti - The awakening of Intelligence, most of his books contain the same ideas. Krishnamurti has been called one of the most "enlightened" individuals in recent history (born in the late 1800s I think). I haven't read nearly enough stuff to have an opinion on that though.

Zarathustra is good, like someone said above but I pefer his later work when he's taking shots at other philosophers and religion


Check of Robert Anton Wilson. Not philosophy per say but his shit will hit the same spot. I recommend first, Prometheus Rising, then Quantum Psychology. Both deals with how humans are basically robots and gives you the tools to break free into higher states of consciousness. Also he wrote some of the most creative and intelligent non fiction I've ever read (1970s i think). We're talking tales of Anarchism and secret societies in the US with twists of physics laced with kinky sex stuff. Illuminatus trilogy and the Schroedingers Cat trilogy.

weird i just bought two of those books before seeing this thread. ill definitely get some of the others posted here once i get my kindle

btw that stanford philosophy site is money. does a decent job of summarizing viewpoints and key texts, may or may not have been responsible for me passing modern political thought

Not sure if it's exactly what your looking for, but Ishmael is pretty dope. I'm about halfway through it but there are times when I'll be reading along and my mind gets blown. It's a cool book

Ayn Rand - The Fountainhead is the best book i ever read

A very controversial book and i dont agree with everything but it is etremely empowering and gives a new outlook on life

IMO, a lot of the literature out there can be particularly challenging at times. I'm a Phil minor and It took a bit of time to get acquainted with various texts writings and comprehend exactly what the author was trying to argue or conceive / perceive.

Back in my freshman year, in intro to phil 1010, the textbook we were assigned is still my go to book for most fundamental or popular philosophy arguments and figures.

It's a great book as well. It's very insightful in keeping the authors view's unbiased and showing arguments / lectures in both directions with supporting ideas.

The dude that jerked it in public lol. He's a great cynic, but I think Aurelius would be a great guy to start with for the stoic/cynic dialogue.

Some other essentials, Descartes' meditations, Hobbes' Leviathan, Mill's Utilitarianism, Machiavelli's Prince, Kant's Critiques, Spinoza's Ethics, Hume's Treatise, Russell's The Problems of Philosophy, Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, Nagel's Bat.

That will keep you busy
