Discourse -- Some new forum software...

I don't know how many other newschoolers also happen to be programmers, but... Jeff Atwood, who's a reasonably well known dude in the software developer community just revealed his latest venture. He's building forum software that doesn't suck. Newschoolers is dope, no doubt, but phpbb and all its clones -- which I'd argue newschoolers is one of -- are pretty dated and lacking in features.

What do you guys think about porting things over to discourse?

Really don't know if its worth the time; don't fix what isn't broke, right? But figured it be something people should know exists...

I'm excited to hear about it.... but does NS really look like standard forum software to you?

Its a completely 100% custom piece of code. Migrating to something else could be an absolute utter disaster - and to boot it would take an unbelievable amount of time. Its really hard to bridge between a content site and a forum site, and NS does this in a lot of ways.

No, what we're much more likely to do is to spend some time improving the forums here. Paul hasn't gone that deep into them since he wrote them in the back of the '86 Oldsmobile on the way from the US Open to SIA in 2005.

Forum software looks absolutely awesome don't get me wrong... but NS is only about 44% forums.

Fact. Honestly, considering the way I use the site -- mostly just to browse videos and lurk the forums, and less so to actually discuss ideas about skiing -- I don't think it needs any changes, whatsoever. But as long as there is something out there that does things differently, I figured it's worth bringing up for discussion.

No man, its totally awesome. The forum software world is just waiting for a revolution.

Its just sooooo complicated to have a content site linked to a forum. That is what the world is waiting for, a software that either does both or a forum software that is deeply API'd to weave into a good CMS.
