shit that was good. i liked the song, and i think the way you did it is the only way that i would have liked that song (in an edit). shot of him on the lift toward the end was out of place though, it kind of broke the action in a bad way.
could of the ramps were IMO miss placed and kind of choked that good pace. Also, some shots were insanely blown out in the background (while gus was in the foreground) with the fs100 it gets real obvious if your highlights clip badly.
thanks Evan! I wondered about the ramps...I tried to use them sparingly =/
as for the exposure...I was struggling with that throughout the first afternoon.
Breck gets super tough with light towards the end of the day... features are half covered in dark shadows and the other half fully lit by the sun (especially ladings). That first afternoon I focused too much on seeing into those shadows (and not losing Gus in them) and definitely over-exposed some shots. Kicking myself while watching the footage at the end of the day haha and yea, as you said...when highlights get clipped...it's obvious.
I have a marker on my histogram at 85% and try to peak whites at that or barely above...obviously I went a little too far right.
Anyways, I appreciate the critique...definitely some things for me to pay closer attention to.
The fact that a lot of the landings were out of time with the beats in the music was really annoying, just because it seemed like you tried to line them up, try using the audio waveform. Apart from that nice.
Look, I'm in no way hating on goodie for his edit, at all. But, this video gets now where near solar systems, saying that is straight ignorant. You have to be a complete idiot to say they are on the same level, im sorry I cant let you down-play the best sound design thats ever been done in a ski movie.
I am humbled, but I wouldn't even dare to compare the two. I would be lying if there were shots that I wasn't inspired by...but Clarke's edit is on another level. As eHeath said, the sound design alone in Solar System sets it apart completely. Thank you though, I appreciate that it even made you think of comparing the two. =)
