Don't Want to go to Prom, but my Parents Want me to. Will I regret it?

I don't want to go to prom in April, but my mom is making a huge deal out of it.. I never liked going to homecoming, and since I don't know who I would even ask to go to Prom, does it really matter? Will i regret it if i didn't go? Who didn't go, did you regret it?
Most, if not all of my friends are going to go, by the way
I've never been that much of a social gathering person

Since OP is on this site, it's safe to assume that he is rather fond of skiing.  On the other hand, prom has always invoked mixed reviews from people who attended.   So why not put the money towards something that you know will be enjoyable, like skiing, in place of spending it on prom.

...because maybe he's not poor as shit and can afford to blow a measly 50 bucks on prom to have a good time? What if he went skiing and broke his leg? You make it sound like skiing will 100% be a good time and prom will only be 50/50. What if it was a flat, rainy day? What if he went to prom, got blown by 2 different girls in the bathroom and then banged a third one later in the night while hammered? You act like skiing is always the best choice and the most desirable thing in the world 100% of the time. Think outside of the box, ya little park rat.

I payed 250 total for both me and my date (girl from a different school) Dont regret a penny. It was a great night, loads of fun, and you get to hang out with all your friends anyway.
Bonus: the meal was delicious, followed by near bottomless chocolate lava cake.
To OP: of your parents want you to go I am sure you will not have to pay 100% of the prom cost, you get to sack up and ask the pretty girl I am sure you have been planning on asking out anyway, and have a great time with your friends. Your family gets the experience they want, you get to have a good time, no one looses.

tl;dr: DO IT

Meh, when I was in high school it was like $50 a person. If he can't afford that, he can't afford skiing, so what's the difference? May as well pay for the cliche "once-in-a-lifetime" experience, have dinner, dance, and get fucked up with friends instead of spending another day hiking the same 6 foot flat box 80 times so he can get the "ultimate shot brooo" of him nailing that sketchy front 2 out.

Most of what you said is very true.  Perhaps my response was a tad subjective.   However, prom usually isn't $50.  A safe estimate for a male going to prom would be around $200. For most American's that is a decent amount of money to wager.  Also a lot of what you said was fairly extreme.....getting blown by two chicks + banging the other....breaking your leg skiing.   Those scenarios are very unlikely.  I was just taking into account an average day of skiing with two hundred bucks in your pocket, compared to being out two hundred bucks and going to something you're not certain you'd like(prom).

It's not called a prom where I'm from, but I think it's the same thing pretty much. I thought about not going but went anyways and had an absolute blast. The supper and evening was all pretty awesome, then we had a 'safe-grad' after and it was a mega good time. DJ, free good, a bar, pool tables. Was great getting trashed and dancing till it was over. Then when it was over it was a pretty good send off to your grad class one last time with the sun just starting to rise.

I'd do it up man. Anyone I know who didn't go regretted it. What's the alternative?

I skied instead of going to prom. When I was done, I went home, showered and went to an after party and got wasted. Haven't ever regretted missing the dance.

I didn't go to my Junior Prom and I graduated halfway through my Senior year. I'm kind of upset that I didn't get to go to Prom, but it isn't a big deal.

If you don't want to go to prom because it's beyond your comfort zone, then just fucking go. I can totally understand if you just don't care for those things, but don't skip prom because you're scared. I've bailed on too many social situations because I was too anxious or depressed.

Dances have always been somewhat shitty for me because i would get jelly of dudes dancing with the girl i have a mega crush on, so i decided i would get into somewhat good shape, become fucking awesome at talking to people, and ask this bitch to prom and have an awesome time grinding on dat azzzz.
Asked her thursday when we went skiing, said yes. No being jelly for me.

OP go, i doubt you'll find something better to do that night anyway. Just ask a hot girl and have the time of your life.
Dances only suck if you make it suck. If you dance and have an awesome fucking time then you wont regret going.

Sadly true... Nobody seems to know what "properly fitting" means. I saw way too many kids at my last school dance rocking pants four inches too long and suit jackets that were way too wide in the shoulders or just plain baggy

I took my prom date to Montréal instead of prom because we were both 18, so take the money you would spend on prom and spend it on and really expensive weekend somewhere else.

honestly, years later i barely even remember my prom. it wasnt very fun and i got way too drunk at the afterparty, because thats what i do when im not having fun. the best part was my mom let me borrow her new car for the night.


ive definately had nights out with friends and shit that ill remember for as long as i live. prom was not one of those nights.

I'm with this guy. I didn't want to go, kinda got tossed into the mix and really didn't enjoy myself. I'm not a dancer, I didn't like high school, and for me prom was just like some lame supervised popularity contest. If it wasn't for the girl I asked to go I would have really hated it more, she was great. Not to sound like a dick man, but prom is about taking a girl basically, and Iif your not sure who your going to even bring it may not be all its cracked up to be.

I can easily say that due to the afterparty, junior prom was one of the most fun nights of last year, and senior prom is gonna be way better. If you have a group of friends to go with I can't imaging you'll regret it

A lot of my friends went to a big concert venue instead of prom. I went to prom with this chick and a few other kids. I really didn't find it as awesome as people make it out to be and left the prom in like an hour. I mean if there are big parties going on, go to those. I went to an epic fucking party at my friends house and the house smelled like cannabis for close to a week, mission success.That was the best part. I mean there will always be epic parties to go to and bitches to get at. Girls get way too into prom. Definitely by no means is prom any where near close to a pinicle in your life so its up to you man.

Im not even in high school yet but from what I hear prom can either be amazing, or it will suck more than getting nutted on a rainbow rail. I have alot of friends, but none of them are girls so im basically fucked. Also make sure that you can leave your prom early because some high schools dont let you leave unless its an emergency. so keep that in mind.

Prom went like this for me.

Pictures-
Dumb as always, parents and girls thinking anyone will give a fuck in 20 years so they take 200+ pictures with the group

Dinner-
Not fucking good. All these stupid ass kids who have never eaten quality meals think this is the most gourmet and delish thing ever. Mass produced "fancy" meals for highschool proms = catering trying to look pretty.

The dance-
It was alright, I may have had more fun at the homecomings and turnabouts, still fun to get rowdy with classmates


This is what really fucking sucked...

So our school gave us the option to pay an extra $___ and go on a "cruise" (read: boat ride) on lake Michigan after the dance itself. Any half brained retard would realize its only to prevent kids from drinking after the dance.

Anyway, basically every girl in our group (besides my date and one other chick) forced it upon all the guys and made us go on the boat "Its a once in a life time experience! Our senior prom!!". I tried to convince the guys n girls otherwise. Told them we can drink and crash at my place no problem. Still to no avail.


So basically, during the 40 minute bus ride after prom to get to chicago, just about every kid on the bus had passed out from being tired besides me and a select few that tried to keep everything rowdy. We get on the boat and its the same fucking story. 80% of the people on the boat are sitting down or passed out. It was fuckin cold out too so not many people were out on the deck. Like what the fuck did everyone expect to do on a boat at night filled with teachers???

basically, to this day its still an I TOLD YOU SO to all the chicks that had been pushing the boat on us.


Fuckin boat ride. I could have hosted a huge party but noooo this is our special night. FUCK.

^not to even mention, the tickets for the boat ride were somewhere between 40-60 a couple. I could have gotten every guy and their date a personal handle of some good quality liquor for that price.

I went to 2 proms, both were fucking dope. You will regret not going...

One involved the fair, and cotton candy, and I had a hot date.

The other my date was average but this was my school's and it was tight as fuck, just so drunk dancing and stuff. We took a limo to the afterparty and got hammered. It was an awesome night.

I went to my senior prom, skipped the junior prom.
Cant say I enjoyed it at all, but its an experience and Im glad I went. I wasn't gonna go at all but a friend of mine's date ditched her and I was like the only guy dateless to ask her and I felt bad.

I was in the same boat. Didn't want to go to prom at all. So I went with a good group of friends, got smashed before the dance, got smashed after the dance, and had a great fucking time. Prom is as good as you make it.

I wish it was that cheap... This year for me it is $120 for the tickets, $180 for a tux rental, probably $50 to $60 for dinner, and $80 for two people on a party bus. Note I didn't cheap out on a tux because I would rather go all out than look sloppy, and the bus is also not included for most people. So when all is said and done, you can get a quality piece of outerwear or two for that price.

Ugh Prom!
So because I'm dating a guy that is younger I'm paying for it all. so I'm spending $500 for a night that I can already tell will suck. I had such high expectations but its just turning into big shit show with tons of drama. So if my dress wasn't nonrefundable I wouldn't be going and I probably wouldn't regret.

When it comes down to it, its like every other night which is hyped up to be the best thing ever, like new year. There is always so much pressure for it to be amazing that it turns out to be alright but pretty average. If your parents are pushing you to go, get them to pay for it and go. Get involved but dont expect it to be anything special and you will have a decent time. Realistically the only people who remember everything and are nostalgic about it are the ones who never summount to anything to go to anything better. So many better nights in the last couple years for me at uni.
