Broken fibula and minor fracture in ankle

Sooo, i was doing a wallflip yesterday and landed with my right foot/leg too far back so it took all the weight and broke...

This sucks since I broke my collarbone 1 year and a week ago and missed that season aswell.

Anyway, I'm going in for surgery tomorrow and I'm not sure what they're going to do since it's a long fracture alongside the bone and not straight across and with the small fracture in the ankle
(plate, screws or just line up)

But anything I should think of afterwards? Tips, exercises, do's and don'ts, etc.
Asking the people with experience from this.

just let it heal well. dont try to go out on it before its fully healed. youll get arthritis later in life and it wont be as strong as a heal. i broke my wrist this summer, let it heal up now its fine. a kid in my school broke his wrist, got a week away from getting the cast off and broke it again on a tramp. now his arm is curved and hurts alot

Perfect question for me! On May 7th, last year, I was skateboarding and I broke my tibia and fibula on my dominant right leg... I had to get 20 screws and 2 plates in my leg!! I was in a wheelchair for a month and a half, and then crutches for a month and a half after that. Then I could bear a little bit of weight on it, but it was still impossible to walk normally. Eventually (like 1-2 months after that) I got to walking on it, but you've got to do your excercises every day. One really good one to regain degenerated muscle in your calf from not walking for a while is to go to a stairset, and stand only on the balls of your feet. Then flex to your tiptoes and back down to stretch your Achilles tendon, and other muscles in your leg and ankle. Do like 5 of those on each stair on the way up every day and you'll be better in no time! I'm skiing again already, and carving hard right still hurts a little, but I can hit the jumps no problem. :) Hope this helps!!

And definitely don't start to try anything with it unless your doctor okays it, because there's a high chance of hurting it worse, and it would be much better to wait a few weeks for it to heal all the way!

Ok, thanks! :)

I had surgery a few hours ago, don't know how many plates and screws, but everything went well and nothing is hurting :)

I asked a doctor in pre-op and she said just let it heal 100%, then you can do whatever you want, it will be just like before :)

Wondering how many time off? I am currently in a cast cause i broke my arm. I still can ski.

ive broken my ankle before and it healed really quickly. but when i broke my heel it took about 3 months to feel completely normal again. when youre using your crutches, try to start putting a bit of weight on your foot when you take a step so you get used to walking again (not too soon though or it hurts real bad). just kind of ease your way back onto your foot again. also, work on keeping your leg strong. do leg exercises that dont put weight on your ankle, even if theyre just leg lifts, they can help. calfs are important too

yeah but who ever listens to that =p i found that starting to put a bit of pressure on a little earlier didnt hurt at all. not too much though haha

I did pretty much the same shit in summer (mid july, broke mine on the tramp though) and I was back on skis in mid october with no problems whatsoever. I got a metal plate and 8 screws in mine, but usually I don't feel a thing. Its annoying, but (for my case at least) not as bad as I first thought.

"good" news, apparently its only one screw, the one in the pic.

the screw holds my fibula in place since it tore my ligaments apart, it like came of the foot, so they will grow back in place. With the broken fibula they did nothing :S

I went for a revisit to the doctor today, everythings healing fine.

But today I found out what had really happend. My fibula detatched from the fot/tibia hence the screw straight across.
The doctor had to adjust it 3 times during the surgery to get it in the perfect place when they normally do it on the first try... apparantly my leg refused at first haha.

Anyway the scary part tho was that it has to heal perfect ont the first try, if it gets messed up before it heals enough my leg will be fckd for life->no jumping, no flipping, no freeskiing etc. :(

So fingers crossed that it works out fine. Removing the screw in two weeks btw :)

Thanks, need them, btw my reaction was like lj's minus the pain. I literally saw my foot bend up on the outside, contrary to most people who brake their leg inwards.

I fractured my calcaneus about 2 weeks ago and had a plate with 15 screws put in. Ive been looking into anything possible to increase the speed and quality of my injury and theres not much besides following the docs orders, no weight on it before you get the ok. Otherwise your just gonna fuck it up worse but thats been said before. In the 1-3 weeks after your surgery your body will automatically take calcium and other vital minerals from other bones, meaning your at an increased chance of another fracture. Dont fall being an idiot because you thought you could handle crutches instead of a wheelchair (like me) during this time. Currently Im just working on getting nutrition absolutely nailed, because there isnt much else you can do otherwise. (quit smoking tobacco if you havnt already, and limit marijuana use to vapes and edibles is what my surgeon said) Get a good calcium supplement, look for calcium citrate its more easily absorbed by the body. Combine that with a vitamin D and/or K to increase absorption of the calcium and you should be set. If you dont already take a multivitamin nows the time to start. Bone is roughly 50% protein by weight, so increase your protein intake by A LOT. Its hard to get enough through diet alone so find a good whey or vegetable based protein powder, I just throw it in smoothies. A body healing a fracture can need as much as three times as many calories, so dont hesitate to pig out on the right foods. DONT USE ANY NSAIDS SUCH AS ADVIL THEY SLOW BONE GROWTH! Thats pretty much all I can think of right now, but the Doctor can be your best friend or worst enemy. Mine told me nothing but "stay off it for 3 months and dont smoke tobacco", so definitely do some heavy research on your injury.

I got a similar break as yours last december (2011) by august. The most important thing to do is listen to your doctor. Once you are cleared for physical therapy, do absolutely everything they say. Don't skip any exercises on any day unless they told you to. Don't do too much, and don't do nothing, do what they told you to do.

Also, I would ask people you know that have been to physical therapy for ankle problems to see what they thought of different places. Not every place is equal. Do a little research to find where you want to go.

I broke my right foot in a triple- avulsion fracture roughly a month ago. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is haha. No surgery and even a soft cast.

Basically the above posters said everything I could think of. Calcium supplements are really good. Milk is good but too much apparently isn't, my doctor explained to me that drinking a shit ton of milk will cause your body to pull more calcium from your bones than usual in order to neutralize the slight acidity the milk intoduces into the bloodstream. Calcium supplements w/ vit, D don't do this, because the animal proteins in milk is what causes the acidity.
NSAID's like ibuprofen also slightly slow bone healing but I'm pretty sure that will only make a difference if you were a 60 year old woman. We're healthy. It's so minute.

So it's pretty much a waiting game.
Can you walk/stand at all yet? (as per doc;s orders, of course)
